School of repair decorative plaster offers to make the right choice of material for application. There are several types of plaster, but most often it is conditionally divided into the main plaster composition and decorative plaster.
The difference between them is in purpose: the main plaster layer aligns the walls, protects against external influences, while decorative plaster helps to realize design ideas for interior work.
Mineral plaster
Apartment repair decorative stucco of this type will be a great option if you want to make a stone effect. It allows you to achieve the effect of relief trimmed surface, and this is achieved due to the presence in its composition of mineral (as the name implies) elements.
So:
- Such plaster may contain particles of quartz, marble chips (see Facade stucco with marble chips: types, features, application methods), granite chips, etc. The application of mineral plaster is a “wet process” of construction, which means it is extremely important for him to maintain the required temperature in the room.
- Mineral plaster can also be used for facade work, but also only at positive temperatures, as it is important for high-quality setting of the mortar with the surface and normal drying of the work.
Attention: It is possible to paint mineral plaster even after application. This property is sometimes quite useful.
Acrylic plaster
The main component of acrylic plaster is acrylic resin, which largely determines its thermal and physical characteristics.
- Acrylic plasters moderately elastic, have the ability to insignificant water absorption. And if earlier polymer stucco mixtures were used mainly for exterior finishing works, since they did not allow to achieve a relief texture, then modern compositions are also successfully used indoors.
- Now, small amounts of marble chips or dolomite are added to acrylic plasters, which determines their successful use in interior solutions.
- An important advantage is the fact that it does not require additional staining. Using acrylic plaster, you can achieve the effect of an aged surface or cracking.
Silicone plaster
Silicone stucco compounds appeared on the market of building materials relatively recently, but thanks to their excellent characteristics they managed to win many customers.
- It contains silicone resin, fillers (mineral chips, synthetic fibers, etc.), additives that improve its properties.
- To the main advantages silicone plaster include a high level of adhesion, vapor permeability, durability, elasticity, aesthetics.
- In addition, sometimes, silicone plaster can be used as a complete thermal insulation material.
- The cost of such a composition will be higher than for conventional types, but excellent operational properties are definitely worth it.
- Also, silicone mixtures “sit down”, which means that the material will not crack and even after large periods of time will remain exactly the same as during the initial application.
Silicate Plaster
Silicate plaster mixes are more often used for external decoration of facades, since it has the properties that are needed rather for decoration of a house from the outside.
So:
- Silicate plasters have a high level of moisture absorption, vapor permeability, resistance to pollution, sudden changes in temperature, as well as aggressive external influences.
- It contains potassium glass, due to which all of the above characteristics are achieved. But silicate plasters with the addition of silicone, can be used indoors.
- They perfectly preserve the given texture and allow you to choose the methods of tinting. Also with the help of attic compounds you can achieve such interesting effects as a “fur coat” (see Facade plaster coat: features of use) and / or “bark beetle”.
Attention: Despite the fact that decorative plasters differ from each other both in the method of application, and in composition, and in the thermophysical characteristics, they also have several common features. One of them is the type of surface treated, or, in other words, the “effect” that we want to get from its use.
- Using various types of decorative plasters, you can get effects: bark beetle, rust, leather, wood, natural marble or granite, antique walls, travertine, concrete, embossed paper, Venetian style. All this and much more depends on the individual preferences and desires of the customer.
In addition to the main components, all decorative plasters can be divided according to the type of filler. It is the filler in most cases that is responsible for what the final result from its use will be. You can see more information on the video in this article.
Textured plaster
As the name implies, the main point in the use of textured plaster is just the volume, texture.
Attention: As part of the textured plaster there are special wood fibers, crumbs of mica or marble, small asymmetric pebbles, etc.
All this allows you to create the effect of three-dimensionality, the pattern on the walls looks voluminous, and thanks to the game with color, better zoning of the space is possible. Textured plaster - This is the most common and in the basic version the most affordable (at a price) type of material.
Structural plaster
Structural plaster allows you to apply the composition in a more uniform layer.
This is the main difference between structural plaster and textured:
- Most often, structural plaster is made on a special mineral basis from lime and cement, less often from potash clay or latex.
- To create a relief, various fractions are added to the composition, most often of the same size.
- Basically, structural plaster has a white color (primary), and to add color to it, you can add various colors - fillers, which can be purchased separately.
Venetian plaster
Venetian plaster used if necessary to create the effect of a smooth surface with a marbled pattern.originally Venetian plaster was used in Italy, where it was invented. Surprising is the fact that the method of its manufacture has been preserved to this day.
- The main difference between Venetian plaster and other types is composition. The composition must necessarily include marble dust, in another way, flour.
- An important role is played by the degree of grinding of flour, in which the finer the grinding, the finer and more elegant the pattern, the larger, the more pronounced the resemblance to natural uncouth stone.
- In addition to marble flour, slaked lime is included in the Venetian plaster. Lime is the binding base between the particles of flour.
- When mixing lime with marble flour, a thick, viscous mass is obtained - this is the plaster mixture. And finally, various pigments are added to this composition. Pigments determine the future color of the coating, as well as
Flock coating
Flock coating is one of the methods of applying decorative plaster, in which compositions containing special “flocks” are used, that is, colored particles that leave an unsurpassed ornament on the walls. Its peculiarity is that this type of coating is applied in several layers and ends after a certain amount of time, when the layers harden.
How to apply decorative plaster
Since decorative plaster serves more aesthetic purposes, therefore, it must be applied at the final stage of wall decoration. As mentioned above, walls should always be prepared in advance for any coating.
In this case, the walls are first sanded, then puttyed, primed and only then a decorative layer is applied. Start decorating with decorative coatings only after the walls are completely dry. Depending on the materials used and the temperature regime inside the building, it can take up to an hour to three hours to dry, inclusive.
The next step is to prepare the plaster mix. Currently, two types of plaster compositions are presented on the construction market: dry powder formulations, as well as ready-mixes.
- If this is a dry mixture, then it will need to be previously diluted to the consistency of a thick paste. It is necessary to decide in advance what kind of pattern will be on the walls, and depending on the chosen option, already start work.
- The size of the fractions in the decorative plaster depends on the type of mixture, usually indicated on the package. Larger fractions are more often used for external (external) decoration, while small fractions are used for finishing work indoors.
- After preparing the solution, the application step follows. Apply decorative plaster with special metal spatulas and graters.
Attention: An important rule - the thickness of the applied layer should be equal to the diameter of the fractions in the composition. Gently smoothing the composition with a spatula, you need to wait until the granules begin to leave behind a slightly noticeable trace. Until the plaster layer is completely dry, you will need to slightly trim with a special grater.
- Where excess plaster remains, it must be removed with a spatula. Where the opposite is too thin layer - add. After that, after 15-20 minutes, re-sanded. The drawing at this stage just begins to emerge.
- Any decorative plaster can be additionally “decorated”. The only condition is to add color in time. Depending on the mixture used, it is fashionable to paint the wall with acrylic paint, silicate paint or varnish.
- Before applying the paint, you must definitely go through an additional primer - this will improve the adhesion process of the paint and the plastered surface.
Recommendations for quality wall decoration
If the finish is not performed by the master, then it is better to experiment first. This can be done on a thin sheet of plywood or fiberboard.
Attention: Just do not forget about the primer. In order to know exactly what primer to use, the instruction on the packaging from the decorative mixture should be read - all necessary information will always be indicated there.
- Any primer should be applied with a short-nap roller.
- After the primer, you should wait at least a day, after which you can start applying the decorative layer. It can be applied with a spatula, sponge or roller. Each of the tools allows you to achieve a certain effect.
- The desired texture is created using a special trowel, thin spatula or mittens. If necessary, you can apply several layers of plaster, but in total they should be no more than 7-8.
- You can fix the work done with a special wax, which is also applied a day after the decorative layer.
More on Venetian Plaster
We have already mentioned above the famous Venetian stucco and that its main difference from the rest of the species is its amazing similarity with natural marble, granite, etc.
The walls, covered with Venetian stucco, create a firm belief that you are in a medieval Italian castle, leaving a truly indelible impression. But the Venetian stucco, as well as other compounds, has its own tricks and nuances, which you definitely need to know about.
So:
- The first and most important rule - before applying the Venetian plaster, you need to make sure that the walls are perfectly smooth. Due to the fact that the main effect is created due to the special refraction of light by the smallest particles of marble, any irregularities and roughness can ruin any work.
- Next is the application. Venetian plaster is applied using special thin spatulas in several layers. Each subsequent layer is applied only after the previous one dries. Layers must necessarily differ from each other in color, only this way it will be possible to create a unique effect of antiquity.
- Start applying the composition with small short strokes.. All the relief sections of this layer will appear later, so it is very important that at least twelve hours elapse between subsequent application.
- As a rule, to create the optimal effect of a marble wall, 3-4 layers of Venetian plaster are enoughhowever, depending on the composition, in some cases, the number of layers may slightly increase.
- It’s important to remember that you must wait at least twelve hours before moving on to another layer. Each layer is carefully inspected, checked for evenness of application, if necessary, polished and wiped.
- After the last layer is applied, again you need to wait twelve hours, and after that proceed to the final stage, namely, waxing. Depending on the desired effect (matte or glossy shine), you can use either bee or synthetic wax.
