How to make drywall walls yourself
How to wall drywall correctly? In construction, various methods are used to level and improve the heat and sound insulation of walls. One of the simplest is wall cladding with plasterboard sheets.
Drywall is a sheet of cardboard, and between them is a layer of gypsum filler. How to close the walls with drywall, the article will tell.

Features and types of drywall
Drywall or gypsum plasterboard is used for:
- Wall cladding, for their alignment.
- The installation of suspended ceilings (see Facing the ceiling with drywall: do it right).
- The construction of partitions.
The thickness of the sheet, the presence of various additives and additives for the manufacture of a gypsum core, determine the type of drywall.
He can be:
- Ceiling, with a sheet thickness of 9.5 millimeters.
- Stenov - 12.5 mm.
- Arched - 6.5 millimeters. It is used if necessary to change the shape of the surface, make it:
- curved;
- curved;
- convex.
Tip: In rooms where humidity is increased, such as a bathroom, bathroom, you should use moisture-resistant drywall (GKLV), which contains special antifungal and moisture-repellent additives. Typically, sheets of moisture-proof drywall are painted green.
When using drywall in damp rooms, its front surface must be protected with moisture resistant coatings.
It can be:
- Quality paint.
- Primer (see Drywall primer - why is it needed).
- Ceramic tile.
In addition to this material:
- In a room where humidity is normal, ordinary GCR is used.
- There is drywall GKLO or fireproof, which includes an additional reinforcing filling, is used to protect from high temperatures and fire. Such sheets are painted red.
Drywall has a lot of advantages:
- Good heat and sound insulation.
- Allows you to hide electrical wires, water pipes and heating.
- Simplified installation of lighting equipment for lighting.
- Simple and fast installation.
- Do-it-yourself anyone who has the basic knowledge described in this article can mount drywall walls with their own hands.
How drywall is attached to a wall
Drywall can be fixed:
- Directly to the wall.
- On a metal or wooden frame (see Let's consider how to fix a profile for drywall to a wall).
How to mount drywall directly on the walls:
- If the wall plane is flat, like concrete, the best choice of putty is to use Fugenfüller putty gypsum from Knauf. In this case:
- when gluing, four thin strips of the composition for the entire length of the drywall sheet are applied with a notched trowel;
- after applying the mixture, the sheet is lifted and carefully installed on special wood linings spaced from the floor to a height of 10 millimeters;
- the sheet is pressed against the wall and leveled using a plumb line or level. The linings are removed only after the adhesive has completely cured, and the sheets should be aligned before the adhesive has set.
- for a better fit, the sheets should be tapped with a rubber mallet. All plates should fit tightly together, align vertically and line up strictly in one line.
Tip: During the work, at least three sheets should be installed from one batch in a row. This will facilitate the alignment of the GCR installation.
- When cladding brick walls, stone or cement blocks, gypsum adhesive is applied in a thicker layer. In this case, the mixture is applied to drywall over the entire surface of the canvas in increments of 30 centimeters, with a minimum distance to the edges of 5 centimeters, as in the photo.
When installed, the panel is pressed firmly against the wall and is set level with light strokes. At least three sheets are placed at the same time.
- If there are bumps on the surface The best option is to install the frame, but modern technology offers frameless mounting options.
Before attaching drywall to the wall, “beacons” are installed, which are quite simple to do.
For this:
- Strips of 10 centimeters wide are cut from drywall.
- With the Perlfix composition, the strips are glued vertically in increments of 60 centimeters, controlling their location by a plumb line to avoid obtaining an additional wall curve.
- The result was a kind of gypsum plasterboard crate.
- Wall cladding can begin 2 hours after the adhesive has completely hardened.
Another option to strengthen the drywall on a not too flat surface is to install “beacons” from the putty. In this case, obvious potholes are simply filled with glue, and then the drywall is attached to the wall.
How to use a wooden frame
The instruction for the construction of the frame is not very complex:
For work you will need:
- Wooden slats with a cross section of approximately 50 × 30 millimeters.
- Screws or dowels for fastening sheets.
Further:
- Work begins with the installation of the starting rail, fixed with screws in 10-centimeter increments, directly to the floor.
- Parallel to the starting element, the same rail is mounted on the ceiling.
- Vertical racks are installed on the base, the step of which is 40 centimeters.
- Level and plumb align the details vertically and in a single line.
- To improve heat and sound insulation, mineral wool or glass wool, placed between the racks, is used.
- Mounted wooden frame.
- Insulating material is laid.
- The frame is sheathed with plasterboard sheets using self-tapping screws designed for wood, 35 mm long with a pitch of 25 centimeters.
Tip: When mounting sheets between them, a distance of up to 7 millimeters should be left in order to perform high-quality finishing of joints.
How to use a metal frame
The most common option for attaching drywall is a metal frame device.
Its advantages:
- The ability to install insulation.
- Convenient masking of communications.
- Built-in backlight device.
- Alignment of the walls.
When mounting the frame, rack and guide profiles are used.
At installation:
- The basis of the design is a guide profile, which is mounted to the ceiling and floor.
- Such profiles can also be used as jumpers between racks, which are used when installing door frames in the partitions.
- Vertical racks in the frame are rack profiles. Plasterboard sheets are fixed on them.
- They are attached to the guide profile with dowels.
Installation of a metal frame under the plasterboard walls in the kitchen or in another room is generally similar to the arrangement of a wooden crate. How to lay drywall on the walls, a video lesson shows in detail all the stages of the work.
How to make a drywall partition in the kitchen
If in modern housing of large sizes a kitchen, plasterboard walls allow it to be zoned or divided into zones:
- For cooking food.
- For relax.
In this case, the border between the functional areas becomes a drywall partition.Walls are selected with a minimum sheet thickness.
When erecting a wall, you must adhere to the following sequence:
- Design design is being developed.
- The frame is being constructed.
- Preparing the installation of sheets.
- Finishing of the partition is in progress.
How to fix skirting boards correctly
There are two perpendicular planes of the walls in the room, this defines two ways of fixing the floor plinth:
- In houses made of timber with concrete ceilings, it is better to fix the baseboard on plasterboard walls.
- In buildings made of brick or concrete with a wooden floor, the best option would be to fix the plank to the floor.
Plinth Installation Procedure
Tools and materials are purchased:
- Liquid nails.
- Special screws.
- Dowels.
- Hacksaw.
- Screwdriver.
- The required number of skirting boards.
Before proceeding with the installation, it must be borne in mind that the skirting board attaches very poorly to drywall. It is best to choose fixing it to the floor.
Tip: If fixing the baseboard to drywall is the only option, you need to purchase special screws designed to work with this material. They can be replaced with zinc coated finish nails.
When attaching the baseboard to drywall, it is better to use the metal elements of the frame used in the construction of drywall sheet.
If the wall extension with drywall was performed with deviations, without mounting an additional profile on the frame, it is necessary to provide the following technology:
- Holes are drilled in the wall for fixing the baseboard.
- Instead of a straight dowel, a special butterfly dowel is inserted into the hole.
- When attaching the skirting board, the self-tapping screw passes through this dowel, begins to unclench it from the back of the drywall sheet, which allows you to create a reliable fixation of the element on the wall.
Another way to install the skirting board is to use liquid nails.
When fixing baseboards in a room where wall sheathing is used with drywall, the partitions are made of the same material, you can use glue, which is also called liquid nails. To date, this method is quite common.
In this case, you do not need to drill, wrap or punch anything. It is enough to apply glue to the baseboard, according to the instructions for it, from the inside of the element and firmly press it to the base for a few seconds.
The price of the work will be significantly lower, but the disadvantage of this method is a tightly glued baseboard, if necessary it is very difficult to dismantle it without causing damage. This method is ideal for attaching the strap forever.
