Finishing cottages: interior and facade
Not everyone understands how a cottage differs from a mansion, or a country house - but there are differences. The country house is not intended for permanent residence.
It is built, most often, with its own hands, and does not have heating and water supply. What is a mansion is clear from its name: it is isolated from other buildings, designed to live only one family, and has its own engineering communications.
But the cottage is part of the general communication system of a group of houses or the whole village. In this case, the exterior decoration and construction of cottages is carried out centrally, by the forces of the customer-developer, and under his control.

General information about cottages
The technologies for building houses in cottage villages are used very different: frame-panel, of timber (see. House of timber: what facade decoration can do), half-timbered. The erection of the walls of such a house can be carried out from cellular concrete blocks, or brick.
Depending on this, the cottage will also be finished: both outside and inside:
- Often, construction companies carry out complex development of cottage villages. This means that you can purchase a house with a rough finish or turnkey.
If you take into account that at least a small piece of land should be attached to the cottage, then, by agreement with the developer, outbuildings can also be erected. - Construction and design can be carried out with the participation of the future owner. In this case, the decoration of houses and cottages is made taking into account his wishes. But most often this happens.
- Before the start of construction, the buyer is provided with a project with which he must familiarize himself and approve. Everything is coordinated, down to such nuances as the facade cladding or how to finish the walls of the cottage inside.
Naturally, the price of a house can vary significantly, depending on the option chosen.
- Since communications in cottage villages are centralized, there is always a management company that monitors the operation of utility networks, carries out their repair and maintenance. Cottage owners pay for these services in the same way as apartment owners in high-rise buildings.
- This short instruction is given for those who want to build a cottage. If you decide to buy it on the secondary housing market, you will most likely be interested in the question of who and how the decoration and repair of the cottages are made.
If there is a demand, there will be a supply. In any city there are companies offering services in facade decoration, interior design, landscape design.
There are many such people who prefer to do everything on their own. For them, our next chapter.
Exterior finish of the cottage
The technology for the construction of cottages and houses, first of all, can influence the choice of the facade decoration option.
So:
- If the walls are built of glued beams or calibrated logs, then they practically do not need a decorative coating. In any case, on the one hand: either outside or inside.
One of the sides, as a rule, is insulated. And only in this case the walls wooden house have to sheathe. - The interior of the cottages is usually spacious. Their area will not decrease too much from the fact that the frame casing with insulation will be made from the inside.
And the possibilities for interior design, in this case, are much greater. After all, all rooms are decorated in different ways.
- Therefore, from the side of the facade, the surface of the log or beam is directly decorated. Calibrated building wood has clear shapes and sizes, so it has a pretty attractive look.
- Its decoration mainly consists in coloring and coating with hydrophobic compounds. This method of decorating the walls belongs to the Scandinavian architectural style, and it can be performed both outside and inside the building.
- The main decoration of the facades of such houses are windows of a non-standard configuration, various methods of cutting logs, contrast stitching. Such structural elements of the facade as balconies, verandas (seeFinishing the veranda inside and out), pediments are also able to create a unique image at home.
And this applies not only to wooden cottages.
- For example, the plastered facade of a cottage built of brick. This house is made in the style of a noble estate.
Here, first of all, the configuration of the house itself is interesting. - Semicircular protruding bay windows with arched windows; combined roof structure; curly balusters on the fences of the balcony, terrace and stairs - all this makes the building solid and respectable. The simpler the decoration of such a house, the better - attention is focused on its forms, and not on the cladding.
- If, for example, the house is frame-panel or built in fachwerk style, it may look like the photo below. In our example, on the facade of the cottage, decorative walling was made.
- You can perform it using a facade or deck board. And even better, take a polyurethane board, because the service life of polymeric materials is longer than that of wood.
- Depending on the structural material of the walls, the space in the embroidery cells is plastered or faced with stone. In our example, both are done.
Each master determines the order of the work himself - everything must be done on the basis of common sense. - The easiest way is to finish the fachwerk finish, first plaster the walls, then mount the joint. And then you can stain and install decorative stone.
If you do not adhere to any style in the decoration of the house, then the facade can be faced with one of the more modern materials offered today by the construction market. These are all kinds of siding; and various panels with stylization as brick, tile, stone, wood.
The cottage can be completely revetted with decorative or natural stone - it’s all about your capabilities.
Cottage Interiors
If we talk about what material for wall decoration in the cottage is the most suitable option, then here too a lot depends on the method of warming the house.
So:
- Let's say the house is timber, and it was insulated from the facade. In this case, you won’t have to spend heavily on interior wall decoration.
We give you an example of a wonderful cottage interior, the wooden walls of which are simply painted. This is what we talked about in the previous chapter of our article.
- As you can see, the surface of the beam is simply painted in beige. The ceiling in the room is made in the same style.
It was hemmed with a walnut-colored floorboard, just like the flooring. Over the plank ceiling, they made decorative lathing with imitation of a bar, and painted in tone with the walls. - The result was a wonderful interior - try to make something similar in your home. And even if its walls were built not of timber, but of foam blocks, or brick, their decoration can be done by sheathing a board, the shape of which imitates a beam or a log surface.
We assure you that you will succeed no worse than in our next example.
- Moreover, you can perform such wall cladding not only in the living room, bedroom or office, but also in the bathroom. A board treated with an antiseptic or hydrophobic impregnation is not afraid of moisture.
- And its coefficient is small in a spacious bathroom, often with a window. In any case, the lower part of all walls, or only those adjacent to plumbing, is faced with tiles.
It requires a tight coating, because no one is safe from leaks.
- The interior design of the cottage can be made in a certain architectural style. Wood trim fits into many of them.
And it’s not at all necessary that you can sheathe wood. - It goes well with other materials. It can be: ceiling construction; only one wall; wooden windows and doors, plus a beautiful carved staircase - a lot of options.
- There are many materials that mimic the texture of wood. With a competent approach, even with their help you can create a stylish interior.
Pay attention to the image below: here the tree was not used at all, but the room turned out in a rustic style.
- The room is in the attic, and therefore the ceiling has two planes. On one of them are mounted polyurethane beams with wood texture.
The other part of the ceiling, and one wall, is decorated with ordinary plastic panels. - Moreover, the panels have a lining board relief. Such decoration, plus accessories in the form of a woven lampshade and homespun rug, make the room look like an ordinary village house.
It turned out beautifully and cheaply. - Let's say that the house project has large windows on the floor. In this case, the best choice of interior decoration is Provence style.
- Finishing such a house is also not without wood. If it is possible to use load-bearing roof structures in the ceiling design, this will unusually decorate the attic, or the living room of the house, in which there is no attic.
- When ceiling structures are not visible, polyurethane false beams are often mounted. Having completed decorative embroidery with a wooden beam or a board on the ceiling or walls, you will get a country-style interior.
- If your cottage has a stove or fireplace, you can focus on them. They do this with the help of their facing with natural stone, tiles, majolica.
Do not forget about the decor of the chimneys. - To decorate a house with brick or block walls, you can use the loft style. Usually a cottage has two floors.
On the first floor there are auxiliary rooms and one large room, in which there is always an internal staircase. By the way, the stairs can also serve as the main decoration of the room. - This room combines lobby and lounge functions. Bedrooms are usually located on the second floor.
So, the loft style is ideal for the design of this large common room. Loft is often combined with other styles: half-timbered, modern, or high-tech.
The highlight of the style is that one wall, or its fragment, can remain without plastering, and even without painting. - If such a finish was provided during the construction process, the inner wall can immediately be laid out of facing bricks. It will turn out a beautiful surface that does not require additional decoration.
It will only need to be treated with impregnation so that it does not get dirty, and does not absorb odors.
- Making repairs in the cottage, decorative brick with relief will help in the implementation of such decoration. The wall lined with them will not even need to be painted.
In any case, you will not trim all rooms equally. Therefore, you need to consider different options, and it is not necessary to reinvent the wheel. - Take the same wallpaper: what else can make a room so cozy, especially if it's a bedroom. The design options for the room using wallpaper are so numerous that they can be listed endlessly.
- In addition to the fact that there is a huge assortment of colors and textures, there are also many options for combining them, as well as combinations with other types of finishes. In our next example, wall decoration is done exactly like this: wallpaper combined with painting.
- It is impossible for an inexperienced person to guess that the gray color will combine so well with a brick tint of wallpaper. Ordinary acrylic paint, with ordinary vinyl wallpaper, it would seem - everything is simple.
And only curtains with the same pattern as on the wallpaper, say that the interior concept was considered by the designer. - By the way, private houses and cottages, as a rule, do not suffer from a lack of ceiling heights. Therefore, wallpapers with such a large pattern will be the most suitable option for the walls.
- Speaking about the interior decoration of cottages, you can not ignore the drywall. If you will insulate the house from the inside, then for finishing with wallpaper you need a smooth and even surface.
In addition, with the help of drywall, you can perform the internal layout of the house.
- Only working partitions and niches are made of more durable, gypsum-fiber sheets. And when it comes to decorative designs, use the usual GKL.
On the image above there is a room with decorative partitions and niches. And also, here is a suspended ceiling made of drywall, with a mirror insert.
What is not an option for the design of a bedroom or living room? - You can decorate the walls sheathed with drywall in a simpler way. This is the creation of figures using a polyurethane frieze.
By itself, it is snow-white. On the wall, painted in a dark shade, a wonderful contrast is created.
In the same way, you can decorate the ceiling.
- In our example, a bedroom whose interior is decorated in the style of a modern classic. With the same success, wooden panels could be mounted on the walls of this room.
- In the styles of classic and neoclassicism, panels are often used with curly moldings, the role of which, in this case, is played by a frieze. But the style is primarily made by accessories.
Here it is: a bed with a back, sheathed in leather; multi-candle chandelier and antique lamps; stucco molding on the ceiling.
