Finishing the veranda inside and out
The veranda is usually called an extension adjacent to one of the walls of the house. This building belongs to the category of summer, non-heated rooms.
By their design, the verandas can be: both open, that is, under the roof, but not glazed, or closed. It is natural that the decoration inside the veranda is made depending on this fact.
And also, the configuration of the extension and its external decoration should harmoniously fit into the exterior of the house.

Design features of the verandas
The veranda plays not only a decorative function, but is also necessary from a purely practical point of view. A well-lit room, without cabinet furniture, decorated with many indoor plants, is the best suited for a pleasant summer vacation.
So:
- The veranda can be combined with the main entrance to the house. In some cases, the entrance to the veranda can be from a room, that is, it does not have access to the street.
Such a veranda is depicted in the photo above. But such an extension should be provided for in the process of building a house. - If the veranda was not in the project, then it can be attached to the house and later. But in order not to have to punch doorway in the load-bearing wall, this is done on the main facade, in front of the front door.
You will not have to carry out any engineering communications there, so you can build a veranda with your own hands. - Naturally, the extension should be as close as possible to the design of the house. The main thing is to properly execute the foundation under the veranda.
It is better to do this in the summer, otherwise, after thawing, the soil may subside, and your porch will simply move away from the wall of the house. Carefully consider what it will be erected from and how it is trimmed outside so as not to spoil the appearance of the building. - Usually, a columnar foundation is made under the veranda. This is enough to support the weight of the frame and its skin.
Brick pillars of the foundation are laid out in pits up to one meter deep, under each corner pillar. If the veranda is more than one and a half meters long, intermediate posts are also made.
- In the holes dug under the foundation, sandstones are first arranged, approximately twenty centimeters high. Fine crushed stone is poured over the sand, and it is poured with a liquid solution.
In order for the water from the solution not to go into the sand, it is better to lay a ruberoid with a bend of 10 cm along the walls of the pit on it before filling the gravel. - The resulting concrete pillow will be a support for the brick column. Before laying it out, concrete must be coated with liquid glass, or bitumen.
Any other waterproofing composition will do. The height of the pillars must be calculated so that the floor mark of the veranda is 20-25cm lower than in the house. - After the masonry is completed, the internal cavity of the columnar foundation is filled with gravel, stone, broken brick - any improvised material. The outer surface of the posts is also coated with a waterproofing compound.
- Wooden beams (logs) will rest on the foundation posts. Beams before laying must be treated with an antiseptic solution.
This will not only protect them from moisture and rot, but also protect them from damage by insects and rodents.
This is only one of the options for installing the foundation under the veranda. It may have another design, depending on the size of the veranda under construction and its walls, if any.
In each case, you need instructions, and best of all, a project.
Wall decoration of the veranda
If the house to which the veranda is attached is timbered, of timber (seeHouse of timber: what facade decoration can do) or frame-panel, then the most organic option is to make the walls of the extension of the tree. Although, you can make the frame from a metal profile, and then just sheathe it with a lining.
Moreover, if the veranda is planned to glaze.
So:
- Then for this purpose, you can use aluminum stained-glass windows installed directly on the basement of the veranda. Their application solves two problems at once: the erection of walls and their decoration, or rather, its absence.
Washed glass - that's the whole finish. It remains only to decorate the base and intermediate racks: with facing brick, or, for example, with stone. - To solve such a problem as the decoration of the verandas, combined with the erection of walls, it is possible with the help of glass blocks. This material is both constructive and decorative.
- In addition, the country's construction markets offer a truly huge assortment of blocks: with corrugated glass, colored, frosted. There are options for blocks, with decorative applications in the inner cavity - it is so beautiful!
- Different options of glass blocks can be combined as you like, make panels, make lights. Of course, the price of such a veranda will be more expensive than the one whose walls are sheathed with plywood or plastic, but the beauty that you get in the end is worth it.
- In our example, the windows of the veranda are small, and are high from the floor. But thanks to the light transmission of the glass blocks, the veranda is light and without additional lighting.
By the way, in this case, window openings could be performed on the roof, in the manner of skylights. In the construction of the walls of the veranda, you can combine both of the options mentioned above: one wall is made of glass blocks, and the other two are made of aluminum stained-glass windows.
The fourth wall is the supporting wall of the house. It will be decorated during the interior decoration of the veranda.
Wood trimmed porch
If the veranda is open, then the concepts of exterior and interior are mixed. And most often, such verandas are made of wood: both structural elements and decorative.
So:
- Of all the materials that can be used to build and decorate the veranda, it is wood that will create the most favorable environment for relaxation, saturating the air with its unique aroma.
- Racks supporting the roof of the veranda can be made of round logs or timber with a section of 15 * 15cm. In the simplest version, as in the example above, the floor of the veranda is made of ordinary edged boards, not even painted.
The ceiling is hemmed with a standard clapboard, and the parapet is made of ordinary bars used for the installation of battens. - But many homeowners do not want to save on decorating the veranda, and prefer to design this corner for relaxation, solidly and soundly, as they say, for centuries. For such cases, manufacturers of wood-based decorative materials will always find the right offers.
- One such option used today in exterior finishes is decking. Otherwise, it is called a terrace board.
This concept can also include garden parquet and deck board.
- It is performed not from solid wood, but from a wood composite. That is, in its composition there are polymer additives.
But in this case, it only improves the characteristics of products that are very durable, and are not afraid of moisture. And this is very important both for an open room, and for a closed, but not heated.
- Expensive and high-quality wood for exterior decoration is plank of larch or ash. This is the name of the facade planed board, obtained from a solid wood.
Planken differs from the usual planed board in the form of a section having beveled and rounded chamfers. Planken does not have connecting grooves, like a lining board, which allows you to mount it with gaps, and not just butt.
- In principle, a porch made of wood can be attached not only to a wooden, but also to a brick or stone house. The main thing is that the color scheme of its finish is harmoniously combined with facade decoration.
But the tree can not only be painted, but also used in the design of its surface carving, and craftsmen in Russia have always had enough.
Here is a great example of the use of carvings in porch design. There are twisted poles, and a beautiful carved parapet, painted in contrast to other structures, and hinged arched elements with a lace pattern.
Take note!
Glazed Veranda Interior
The interior design of a glazed veranda can, in principle, be considered as loggia decoration. But the veranda, as a rule, is more spacious, which means that it has more possibilities for design.
So:
- Although this room is considered to be summer, nothing prevents you from installing heaters on the veranda, as in our next example, and using the veranda all year round, and not just in summer. Then finishing materials can be used absolutely any.
- And here is an example of the interior design of the veranda. In addition to stained-glass windows, the roof of the room is also glass, so the room is simply flooded with light.
To avoid direct sunlight, frosted acrylic glass is used in the glazing of roof windows. - A wonderful addition to the interior of the veranda can be some unusual blinds or original curtains. The design of the ceiling, of course, will depend on which roof is made.
In addition to wood, in its decoration you can use plastic and MDF, hem with drywall and paint, veneer with polystyrene tiles, make a suspended ceiling - yes, anything.
And the walls can be decorated in different ways, but almost always in bright colors. The floor on such a veranda can be almost anything: from tiles to parquet.
On the image above: the floor under the baseboard is covered with carpet, around the entire perimeter of the room. Do not do on the veranda without upholstered furniture - well, what a vacation without a comfortable sofa!
But it should also be taken into account that with an unheated veranda there can be temperature changes in design and therefore thermal gaps should be taken into account where necessary!
