General idea of decorative plaster
Difficulties with applying decorative plaster will not arise. Regardless of the manufacturer, for each type of vintage plaster there is always a description of how to make a solution with your own hands and put the plaster on the walls.
So:
- In most cases, depending on the composition of the material, a roller or spatula is required to apply the solution.. When preparing, there can be only one difficulty - cleaning the surface on which it is planned to lay the composition.
- First, the wall must be completely cleaned of all dirt, old plaster (see How to remove old plaster from walls without problems), paint or wallpaper. You should always remember that the wall being treated must be absolutely clean, otherwise after applying the plaster all defects will be visible, which the finish will only emphasize. As a result, the walls can look completely different when using the same material. If conscience allows, then we can say that it was intended. But if it comes to custom work, you will have to scrape the walls clean, because only on such a surface decorative plaster will lie perfectly.
- To quickly remove old wallpaper, you can use warm watermoisturizing and facilitating the cleaning process, and at the same time protecting the wall from unnecessary mechanical damage (see How to remove old vinyl wallpapers from the walls yourself).
- After the wall is ready and dried, it is necessary to apply a primer. Here you need to approach the choice of material responsibly, because this is the basis for decorating the wall.
Attention: Choose quality products and always with deep penetration. This is necessary to ensure the best adhesion of the decorative finish to the wall. Also, a good primer coating guarantees a long finish.
Many people are interested in the cost of restoring the material, because it can be damaged mechanically, restoration of Venetian plaster is not expensive and simple. It is at the level of putty.
What attracts the material
Venetian stucco species vary in composition. Just before choosing, you need to understand what suits you and what does not suit you. Let's look at what can be achieved using this material.
Wall alignment | Largely due to its properties, plaster copes with various defects and shortcomings on the walls.
|
Plaster as a heater | Another property of decorative plaster is insulation. It is important to understand that in order to fully achieve this effect, it is necessary to use a primer coating that is no less high-quality than the plaster itself. Pay attention to the manufacturer of the finish coat, do not forget that you can use special insulation plaster on top of the primer with deep penetration - to achieve the maximum effect . |
Variety of finishing solutions | Decorating rooms with decorative plaster to this day remains the most successful solution in terms of originality.
|
Style and Design | Such a solution will fit for any room. Some people believe that decorative plaster is the choice for elaborate interiors, made in the concept of classicism, art deco and other original styles. Conversely, in today's favorite directions, such a finish will not find application. But reality proves that decorative plaster, when used correctly, can prove itself in any interior. It is only important to choose the right material and design solution. The versatility of this finishing material is truly amazing and gaining popularity among fans of any architectural styles. |
Material safety | Decorative plaster is environmentally friendly after complete drying. Its constituent elements of hard rocks, such as marble or granite, are freely found in the wild and will not spoil your health in the form of decoration. Moreover, the plaster is dustproof and contributes to the natural control of the humidity of the room, sometimes they say that it “breathes”. Neither toxins, nor harmful gases or smells will disturb you when it comes to decorating with decorative plaster.
|
Life time | If during the decoration all the work was done honestly, then for durability you can not worry. Plaster also has a lifespan, but believe me, you’ll rather get tired of the design of the room (see Wall decoration design, interior ideas) rather than your finish aging. |
Interaction with the indoor climate | Due to its natural materials, plaster does not hold odors or gases, tolerates changes in humidity or temperature in the room. All you need to know about caring for your finish is to occasionally wipe it off from dust. Which, by the way, practically does not accumulate on the walls trimmed with decorative plaster. |
Method of applying plaster
First you need to look at Venetian stucco samples and select the option you need. After that, prepare a container for kneading and a spatula for Venetian plaster. Special stamps are also sold for making relief.
So:
- Walls should no doubt be prepared. They must be cleaned and leveled, without serious chips and deep potholes. Minor irregularities are acceptable, but still not desirable.
- Then, it is necessary to impregnate them with a special deep penetration acrylic primer (see Primer walls and all for that matter) When working with a primer, two rules must be remembered - apply evenly and quickly enough. As soon as the wall dries, you need to treat it with soil again. The prepared surface must dry completely, after which the surface must be marked and glued at the edges. For sizing use masking tape.
- Venetian marble plaster is applied in several layers. The coating should be laid as thinly and unevenly as possible. The final layer should be of different thicknesses, this creates a visible depth and transfusion of tones while maintaining the same color of the plaster. This technique is called color stretching.
- When applying the first layer of plaster, a finishing material with a crumb of marble is used. This is necessary for strong adhesion to the primer. The first layer is applied evenly, thinly and over the entire surface. Use a spatula or grater to work.
- As with primers, let the first coat dry dry. After four to five hours, you can already work with the "Venetian" technique, applying the next layer with glaze, as described above.
- To achieve a matte finish, use the same plaster to apply the first and all subsequent layers. If you want to get gloss - buy the most crushed (finely dispersed) plaster and mix with paint.
Note: To get a matte effect, new layers are laid from the same material as the first layer. If you want to get a gloss, then the finest crushed plaster is taken, which is mixed with the dye you like.
Stucco technique
The method for independent work is not complicated, there simply are some points that distinguish it from other types of plaster.
Let's look in more detail:
- When all surfaces have been prepared and dried, apply a special putty for facing work. This coating should also dry, so you have to wait about 7 hours.
- Dilute the primer with water in a ratio of approximately 1/7. To apply, use a wide brush for painting work, gently press the layer with a brush, when applying, remember that the primer should adhere firmly to the wall. The primer is applied in two layers, after which the surfaces must dry. It will take about five hours.
- Prepare the primer material, mix and calculate how much you need to work. Mix it with dye and bring to a creamy state.
- To work with plaster, use a small spatula.
- The plaster is applied from the upper corner of the wall and moves down vertically. In this case, it is necessary to apply in a uniform layer, working with a spatula from top to bottom and sideways, as if with a brush.
- Accelerate the plaster in all directions to get the effect of even distribution on the surface. Hold the tool tight and at a small sharp angle to the work surface. (10-15 degrees). There should be no empty spots or spaces on the surface.
- Having reached the bottom, work with a spatula from the bottom up for convenience. When finished, let the material dry for five to six hours.
- Stir, with the addition of paint, which are going to cover the surface. After adding the dye, mix again to obtain a homogeneous mass.
- Carefully calculate the right amount of paint before applying the plaster. If you miscalculate, you will need to do the extra work and apply another layer.
- Work with a short grater, putting plaster on it with a spatula.
- Make strokes no longer than the size of the grater you are working with. Apply the material freely with short movements in an arc.
Surface texture
The edge, which is collected at the end of the stroke, accelerates down and at an angle to the line of the previous movement. Alternately plastering the plaster and dispersing the arising influences, do not forget to change the direction of movement of the grater and the length of the smear. Plaster until you cover a sufficiently large area, about 1 m².
So:
- Level the overlay with long tool movements. Change direction randomly to maintain uniform application. Work until the layer is thin and evenly distributed. When leveling, you can put more pressure on the grater, for efficiency.
- Grater must be cleaned regularly from plaster with moisture. Use a rag every 3-4 strokes.
- After leveling the surface, let it set. This will take about 20 minutes, after which the wall must be smoothed with a wide spatula. Work crosswise, moving from the top of the wall to the bottom. A light gloss should appear on the surface, after which the pressure must be weakened so as not to bring down this effect.
- The resulting glossy crust needs to be fixed by clearing the surface with a clean grater. Press harder and maintain an angle of 5-10 degrees.
- Now go through all the steps on the remaining surfaces: apply strokes of the plaster, disperse and smear the influx, smooth and rub to a gloss.
- At the corners and at various difficult places, work with a spatula from the edge, and moving into the depths of the difficult section.
- If leveling becomes difficult or the surface is difficult, take a smaller spatula.
- Also, to obtain gloss and smoothing, use a short grater in these areas. Movements should be from a difficult place and to the inside, not yet processed side of the wall.
- At the lower edge of the work surface, lay the material in an arc, working the tool from the bottom up.
Be careful! When working with the bottom edge, the grater always goes from the bottom and smoothly crossing the previous brush stroke tends up the arc. - After receiving the gloss, determine if you want to achieve the best effect. If necessary, apply the next coat to wet plaster. Then you need to go through another finishing cycle, dividing the processing areas by one square meter.
Attention: When the gloss appeared on the finish, several layers with different color shades can be applied to the surface. Experiment in a separate area to get the desired effect. Then work on the entire surface, observing the proportions obtained.
The properties of Venetian plaster can give almost any texture. Here everything will depend on your desire. The price of the material is not high and it is worth trying to do everything yourself. The instruction will not allow you to make mistakes.
