How to get colored plaster
The paint coat on the plaster not only gives it a more aesthetic appearance and the desired color, but also creates an additional protective film that protects the coating from moisture, sunlight and other external influences.
But there are ready-made polymer mixtures already colored in bulk. And if the color of decorative plaster suits you, then it is enough to process the dried surface with varnish or wax without finishing painting.
Also quite common option are white stucco compounds, which are tinted before use. In this case, you do not depend on the assortment and can give the material any shade from the palette offered by the manufacturer. To do this, just select it from the samples and, without leaving the store, mix the plaster with the tint on special devices, remembering that after drying the color will become lighter.
Tip. It is better to buy material with a margin and tint all at once, so that it does not turn out to be colored in case of a lack of solution and purchase / tinting in the future. It is also recommended to do preliminary colorings to make sure that the selected shade after drying the composition suits you.
This technique can significantly reduce labor costs and time spent on wall decoration, but it can not be called universal, since decorative colored plaster may still need to be applied with a paint layer in the following cases:
- If this cement plaster. Firstly, it crumbles, therefore it needs to create a protective film. And secondly, it is impossible to qualitatively color the mass. In any case, the choice of shades is very limited by the amount of pigment that can be added to the solution without risking degrading its properties.
- If the color is not quite rightwhich you like.
- If you need to create additional surface protection, for example, in the case of facades or rooms with high humidity.
- If you need to get a non-plain wall, and a surface with a complex color effect.
Note. In any case, the tinting to which decorative plaster is subjected allows to save on paint and reduce the finishing time, since the tinted surface will require the application of fewer layers of paint. If usually they require at least two, then in this case one is enough.
The main methods of painting plaster
To begin with, we will answer the most common questions. For example: does a colored decorative plaster need a primer before painting (see Primer for walls for painting - types and tasks)? Mandatory, because depending on the thickness of the application and other factors, it can absorb paint unevenly, and the coating will turn out to be heterogeneous. In addition, the primer reduces paint consumption.
The second common question is how to paint decorative plaster? It depends on the operating conditions of the painted walls.
So:
- For facades choose weatherproof paint for outdoor applications.
- For wet rooms, bathrooms (see What paint to paint the bathroom: consider options) - moisture resistant.
- For kitchens, halls - wear-resistant, able to withstand wet cleaning and cleaning, etc.
As for the composition, it can be both enamel and water-based acrylic paint - if only you were satisfied with the price, appearance and performance. But for interior decoration of living rooms it is still better to dwell on odorless water-soluble compounds that do not emit harmful substances.
Ideally, varnishes, paints and decorative plasters should be from the same manufacturer and from the same series. But let's move on to the ways in which paint can be applied to the plastered surface.
Solid color
You can start decorating the walls only after the plaster and the primer applied to the surface are completely dry. Depending on the type of composition, layer thickness and environmental conditions, this may take from several hours to several days.
A tool for painting can be a brush, and a roller with a long pile, and a spray gun for applying paint. The latter work more convenient and faster. In any case, a brush is first used to paint the corners between the wall and the ceiling, the perimeters of openings and hard-to-reach spots. The paint is applied so that it gets into all the recesses of the relief.
Embossed coloring
If decorative plaster has a beautiful pronounced relief, it can be emphasized by visually giving the surface an additional volume. To do this, the recesses are painted in one color, and the protrusions in another. This is how the most effective decorative plaster of color turns out.
There are two ways to do this: using a dry brush or a wash method:
- Dry brush. First, the entire wall surface is painted in the usual way in the main tone, or as the main one, the own color of decorative plaster painted in bulk is used. The paint layer is allowed to dry well, after which they take a different color of paint, dip the brush into it so that it has a minimal amount of composition, and lightly pass it over the protruding areas. Instead of paint of a different shade, you can use compounds that simulate gold, silver or bronze - the so-called decorative metallic. And instead of a brush - special mittens or a sponge.
- Washout. This method is more difficult to execute, requires more labor and time, increases the consumption of material. But the effect is worth it. The instruction is as follows: a continuous layer of paint of a different color (darker) is applied to the main background (usually lighter), it is only allowed to grip slightly, and then it is erased with a damp cloth or sponge with light movements without pressure to wash off the paint only from the bulges, but leave it in the troughs. Painted darker than the main surface, they seem deeper, and the finish itself is more embossed.
It is important. For the background layer, you need to choose a waterproof paint, so as not to wash it off with the top layer. Even better - use ready-made colored or mass-painted plaster.
It is difficult to say which of these methods is more advantageous. To understand, try both in inconspicuous areas. But the fact that washing will require more money, time and effort is unambiguous.
When calculating the required amount of paint, consider its nominal consumption per square meter and the number of layers. But keep in mind that with a pronounced relief of the plaster it will need more, so buy with a margin of 10-15%.
If the relief is barely noticeable, then try to apply paint with a thin layer, otherwise it will smear the texture even more.
Finish finish
To protect the colored decorative coating from external negative influences and facilitate surface care, it is advisable to apply water-based varnish or wax on it. If the surface is varnished in two or three layers, then each of them must be allowed to dry.
However, such a coating can create problems in the future, as it will be difficult to repaint the decorative plaster in a different color - the paint can drain from a smooth base. If the wax can be removed with detergents, the varnish is held tight.
But this problem is also solved: the wall just needs to be treated with a primer. It will increase adhesion and the new paint will lie well and evenly on the old.
Conclusion
There is nothing complicated in painting walls using decorative plaster; moreover, an unsuccessful attempt can always be corrected by repainting. To feel confident in your abilities, you can watch the video in this article, observe the work of the masters, try to paint a small section of the wall.
In any business, the main thing is not to be afraid, but to do, and everything will surely work out.
To tint the plaster well and in the event that it is planned to paint. On the tinted plaster, the paint will lie more evenly, and the color will be more saturated.
