How to paint a bathroom at home? Painting is the most popular and quite economical option for finishing a room such as a bathroom. When using hermetic shower enclosures that do not allow direct contact of the walls with water, you can create not only an excellent design, but also significantly save money on repairs.

When installing the bathroom, you will need to use a combined finish: the area near the bathtub is covered with waterproof materials, which can be plastic panels, ceramic tiles, and the rest of the surfaces are cheaper, such as paint, or special waterproof coatings are selected. In both cases, the question arises, what paint to paint the bathroom?

Features of the design of the bathroom staining

When arranging a bathroom, paint will be a good solution in cases:

  • Design a complex or original image.
  • The ceiling and walls have irregularities.
  • The geometry of the room is complex.
  • The room is a large area.
  • Easy to finish.
  • Relatively low price of coverage.

Tip: Choosing this way of decorating the bathroom, you should provide good ventilation in advance so that condensation does not accumulate.

The advantages of this finish are:

  • Low cost of work when using any project.
  • Easy to apply paint that does not require special skills.
  • After preparing the surface, the whole process takes quite a bit of time.
  • A wide selection of drawings.

Disadvantages of staining:

  • It is not recommended to paint the bathtub of a small size due to poor ventilation in it.
  • From the mechanical impact of the formed layer can easily be destroyed. Moisture will accumulate in the resulting void, which will subsequently cause surface destruction.
  • The painted surface must be properly looked after, especially in places where humidity is increased.
  • The life of the paint without visible defects is much shorter than that of ceramic tiles.

Types of paint for the bathroom

Despite the wide variety of paints that modern manufacturers produce, some of them are unacceptable for wall decoration in such a room.

Nowadays, such waterproof paints as:

  • Acrylic This is a modern paint coating, which includes:
  1. acrylic polymer;
  2. marble chips;
  3. titanium dioxide.

When coating on the wall, a kind of film forms, which allows the walls to "breathe". Such paint is used to repair an old bathroom.

  • Latex (cm. Latex paint: how to work with it) This is a mixture whose main component is latex acrylate. For a long time, the coating retains an excellent appearance, while caring for it, you can apply wet cleaning with various chemicals. Such material when painting walls is suitable for any surfaces.

  • Silicone Combines the best qualities of the two previous options. It is widely used in rooms where large temperature differences and increased humidity are possible. Paint is applied to the concrete slab, masonry, plaster in several layers.The coating protects the walls from the growth of mold and fungi on them.
  • Water emulsion. The paint contains polymer particles and water. However, this coating can not be washed often, so it is used, most often, for ceilings with high humidity in the room.
  • Silicate. It is based on liquid glass, with the addition of resin and silicon. Oxides of various metals are used to give color. The basis of such paint is liquid glass, so before applying the coating the walls are carefully primed with a special primer.

Tip: When choosing a paint, it is necessary to choose the right color gamut, take into account the vapor permeability of the coating, antibacterial protection, resistance to various chemicals.

How to choose a bathroom design

When painting walls, the bleached ceiling is most suitable (see How to whitewash the ceiling with water-based paint correctly) These are hygroscopic materials that allow you to lower the humidity in the bathroom. Chalk perfectly absorbs excess moisture, prevents a large formation of condensate.

Application of chalk on the ceiling is better than water-based paint. With an increase in the area of coverage with chalk, water flows on the walls and floor decrease. This explains the tradition of painting the walls of the bathroom with paint only to half, and whitewash the top of the wall with chalk.

However, what color to paint the bathroom, the ceiling in it, each owner decides for himself, choosing in addition to the design and color scheme. Coloring helps create tone or shade. The color is low, the composition is easily added to chalk and paint. This is a water-soluble type of coating, which significantly increases the range of its application.

They can be given the desired shade in almost any paint, the main thing is to maintain the correct ratio of the amount of color to the volume of the dye. White paint can be given the desired color after adding color to it.

How to prepare for painting

Before painting the base requires careful preparation. This is due to the fact that the paint practically does not hide irregularities, this finishing process makes it more difficult.

Wherein:

  • All existing old coatings are removed from the walls. To do this, you can use:
  1. a grinder with a flexible emery disc;
  2. sand paper;
  3. construction spatula;
  4. scraper;
  5. solvents.
  • Surfaces are cleaned of dust, for this they are washed with warm water and primed (see Wet waterproofing primer).
  • Defects formed are coated with waterproof acrylic putty.
  • All irregularities are sanded with sandpaper. If there is mold and fungus on the walls, they are treated with bleach, antiseptics, which contain special elements, or copper sulfate.
  • An even base is carefully treated with a primer in approximately three layers. In this case, it is best to use latex primers, which include antibacterial substances. Each new coat should dry completely.

To paint the bathroom you need to purchase:

  • Brushes. With their help, the surface is covered quite tightly, but at the same time the material consumption increases.
  • Roller. Such a tool applies a layer of paint of a significantly smaller thickness, which allows saving, but it is difficult for them to process corners and small irregularities. Aqueous emulsion paint is best applied with a felt roller. For a larger area of painting requires a wider roller.
  • Atomizer (see We select a spray gun for painting). It is possible to apply paint more qualitatively and evenly, but such a tool requires good care: it must be thoroughly washed after the end of each work.

Tip: For finishing a small area, you should not spend money on the purchase of equipment, it is better to use the combined method of brush and roller.

How to paint a room

After it has been determined how to paint the walls, they are finally prepared by watching the video in this article, you can begin painting work.

How to paint a bathroom with your own hands will tell you how to do the work:

  • Water-based paint must be applied in two layers. The first of them is allowed to be diluted with water 10-15%.
  • To remove excess material from the roller or brush, a special tray is used on which grooves are cut. A small amount of paint is poured into it, and before application, the tool rolls through the grooves. If this is not done, then troubles like smudges may appear.
  • At the border of the docking of various paints and adjacent areas, masking tape is glued, which will allow not to paint over unnecessary areas.

  • First, the corners and the most inaccessible places are painted over.
  • The entire surface is processed. To smooth out irregularities and small defects, the first layer is applied with a brush, which will make the layer more dense.

Tip: Paints in the same container may vary in shades. To make all walls the same color, you need to mix all the paint in a bucket, and get a medium shade. The next wall should not be painted until the previous one is finished.

  • After drying of the first layer, the next is applied with a roller.
  • For the manufacture of walls with lines, squares and other geometric shapes, you can use masking tape. It will make the borders of the lines quite smooth, without an influx. In this way, monophonic wall surfaces are made diverse.
    In this case, the masking tape should be glued along the supposed border and a different color should be applied. After the paint dries, the tape is removed.
  • A beautiful effect is obtained when using painting through stencils.

To paint the walls in such a room as a bathroom is quite simple, inexpensive, but this way you can perfectly update the interior.
