The main advantages of painting
Decorative plasters (seeWall decoration with decorative plaster: create a beautiful interior) and paints have several advantages as a finish.
Consider them in more detail:
- Rich color palette, which allows you to implement any design decisions;
- Easy and flexible application - during the work with this material there is no discomfort, and thanks to plasticity with drawing there will be no problems;
- Environmental friendliness - This factor is extremely important at the present time. Everyone pays attention to what surrounds them, especially if we are talking about a children's room;
- Durability - Long operational life helps save future costs.
Types of paints
Paints and decorative plasters have several types. The dye acts as a protective layer. And before deciding how to paint decorative plaster, you need to choose a dye, because they are quite different in composition and have different characteristics.
Acrylic
Paint for decorative plasters of this type based on acrylic is a fairly popular and good material. It is used for painting rooms with high humidity and living rooms.
Such compounds have in their arsenal the following characteristics:
- They respond well to evaporation, for this very reason they are wiped clean with wet wipes without fear during their service life, while the aesthetic appearance will not deteriorate;
- Manufacturers for tinting produce a huge assortment of various colors and shades, thanks to this quality, the coloring composition can be selected for any interiors;
- After the composition is applied to the plaster, the walls will find a matte surface;
- Acrylic based material is affordable. It can be called the golden mean between price, production, modern technology and quality.
There are some nuances that simply cannot be ignored.
Attention: experts do not recommend buying this type of paint for those rooms in which there is a risk of liquid getting on the ceiling and walls. These include bathrooms, as well as rooms where the car will be washed. If contact with water cannot be avoided, then compositions made on the basis of latex are best suited.
Latex paint
The meaning of working with dyes of this type is to dry the material, which becomes thin, but at the same time quite durable.
- Thanks to these characteristics, you can safely carry out wet cleaning, because the compositions made on its basis are not afraid of liquid.
- The coating is absorbed into the base and lasts long enough. And it can be applied with your own hands. From this, the finish price will be much lower.
- The composition of such paint can create both a matte and a glossy surface, which is perfect for painting walls that have been plastered.
- If decorative plaster is applied to the surface, then the latex composition (seeLatex paint: how to work with it) fits perfectly. This is all due to the fact that no other material will not highlight the texture and volume of the putty pattern of this type.
- This material will be an excellent solution for coatings in unheated rooms. It is also effective for external surfaces.
But this material has its drawbacks:
- If you want to remove the paint, then this will be difficult to do.
Attention: If this material is frozen, then you do not need to make a purchase. She is losing her properties. Therefore, refrain from buying in the winter on open trays.
PVA based water based paint
This composition is a fairly convenient option if you want to adhere to the style of “cheap and cheerful”, in addition, the appearance will be quite attractive. Despite the fact that the water emulsion is not rich in color gamut, it is simply created for rooms in which color saturation and a special design are not required.
Do not forget that the material from the water emulsion is not used in rooms with high humidity, as well as where there is an option to wipe it with wet wipes.
Attention: To make the color more saturated, paint based on PVA should be applied in several layers. To make the effect even better, before starting work the walls of the house are best treated with a primer. Such actions, first of all, will improve the adhesion of the surface with paint, as well as reduce the consumption of water-based composition.
Alkyd and oil paints
These paints are characterized by a durable layer and color saturation, but there are also disadvantages, namely:
- Strong toxic odor. To carry out work with such a composition is almost impossible. But after it dries, there is no smell left, but even the neighbors will smell it during evaporation;
- A small selection of shades;
- Paint is quite expensive, and the consumption is large;
- If the work will be carried out with a brush or roller, then this will affect the speed of painting.
Dyeing
Regardless of whether it is a paint with the effect of decorative plaster or simple, all work is performed in a certain order. This you can see on the video painting decorative plaster. So, first things first:
What tools are needed for plastering and painting walls:
- Brush tray and roller (seePaint rollers: consider in detail);
- A cord from kapron (it is laid on a bucket with a composition so that the paint does not splatter;
- Plate with spikes on the edge of the tray.
To paint the plastered surface, you can take a special mitten or a wide brush.
Attention: If you have a large coverage area, then it is better to purchase a spray bottle. Then you can apply the coating evenly and quickly.
Foundation preparation
To begin with, it is worth preparing the surface, because you need to significantly increase the adhesion of the wall so that the paint does not fall off the finish layer, does not crack and does not crumble over time.
- The easiest option is to apply a coat of paint to a surface that has just dried. This is done very often, since you can bypass the preparation process that is required when painting the previous layer.
- All you have to do is remove the dust and treat the plaster with a primer mixture for better adhesion of the material and paint. After that, leave your creation for a while.
- It is more difficult when the old surface is painted, which has significant contamination. In this situation, the plaster must be treated with special brushes having metal fibers.
Attention: A prerequisite is degreasing, which is carried out with a soda solution (two to three percent) or with a solvent (but this option will cost much more).
Methods and technology for painting decorative plaster
The spray gun for decorative plaster has its own specifics and is used according to technology. Any painting work needs to be started only after the plaster layer has dried thoroughly. It can take anywhere from eight to forty-eight hours. These times will depend on the composition of the mixture, ambient temperature and humidity level.
- If there is a tendency to shedding or peeling off the plaster, in order to strengthen the composition, it is best to process the wall for tinting with a colorless primer (see How to strengthen the crumbling plaster with your own hands);
- As soon as the moment of its complete drying comes, proceed to painting the decorative plaster;
- Before you begin to do work, we protect the furniture from dripping and splashing, windows and all other surfaces. For this, professionals are advised to use a special plastic film, which you can easily buy in any specialized store.
- Before using the purchased paint, it is thoroughly stirred. We apply paint to the walls with a brush or roller (everything is individual here). If we work with a brush, then paint is applied not only with vertical, but also with horizontal movements;
- First, it uses horizontal strokes, then blend them vertically. To make the painting even, we recommend the same brush with which the paint is applied. Do not forget to shake it from time to time, so that during the work the composition remains uniform in consistency and color, and there is no sediment at the bottom. Work with the roller is not difficult. First, immerse the tool in the paint, roll it along the edge of the tray to remove excess paint;
- We apply the composition to the wall from top to bottom, and then from the bottom. The strips should overlap in such a way that they overlap each other by about four to five centimeters. As the flow rate is necessary to increase the pressure so that the paint lays down correctly. The wall can be painted in one or more layers. In both cases, it should be qualitatively shaded;
- So that the surface as a result turns out to be perfectly smooth, you must first use the brush first (shade well first), then roll everything with a roller. The simplest method of painting plaster will be painting in one pass. This means that we paint the plastered surface completely, not forgetting about the protrusions and indentations.
- You can also try a combination of different colors. To do this, first apply a base coat of paint, which should be light. After it dries, we process the parts of the relief that protrude in a darker shade. This technique of adding extra volume is called the dry brush method;
- In some cases, instead of paint, you can take metallic (silver, gold, bronze). They are applied using a special mitt or dry brush;
- In order to soften the contrasts on a surface with a small texture, we additionally rub the paint with a rubber sponge. The same option can be used to enhance the effect of deep relief, if you want to give the decorative coating an older look. The protruding details can be emphasized by applying bronze, silver paint or gold;
- Using a short-haired roller, one can achieve a rather interesting effect when painted under the form of a “bark beetle”. Grooves that are present on the wall and remain untreated will create a contrasting pattern. Such a difference can be improved or muffled.To do this, we first add a coloring composition to the composition of the plaster, then we paint the walls in the same color, but with a different shade.
How to paint decorative plaster having a heterogeneous texture
When working with such material, you need to know some nuances. If smooth and textured areas are present on the treated surface, painting should start from the textured area.
- We process smooth elements only after the relief elements have completely dried out. If you lose sight of this moment, then when applying paint to the wall, without taking into account the texture, particles of the plaster surface that are not fixed so tightly will begin to exfoliate, sticking to smooth sections.
- After drying, when re-applying the paint layer, strict adherence to this sequence is not required.
- Painted and dried decorative plaster is additionally coated with beeswax so that the surface becomes matte.
To the question whether it is possible to apply decorative plaster to paint, you received an answer, of course yes. The main thing is to choose the right dye and then apply it according to the technology. Take your time and do everything deliberately. Take a look at the photo and select the material you need and you can get started. Decorative paints and plasters will make the finish durable and attractive.
