Stained glass paints are divided into two most basic groups:

  1. Water based paints - Acrylic, well washed off with water and most often require firing for fixing. After such manipulations, the painted product can be washed easily, even with cleaning products, this will not damage the paint.

Such paints are environmentally friendly and practically odorless, for these qualities, they are well suited for children's creativity. They are more liquid and transparent, well transmitting light.

  1. Organic solvent based paints - Alkyd, can be both alcohol-based and lacquered. Such paints for painting do not require firing, they are more dense and matte. They hold well and can be wiped with a damp cloth or rinsed.
But such paints are not suitable for everyone - they have a strong pungent smell, so children and people with allergies cannot work with them. In a well-ventilated area, working with such paints will not harm.

Everyone chooses which colors he will use for stained glass painting.

Acrylic - do not smell, brighter, do not require special cleaners. But when applied, the paint may lie unevenly or require several strokes.

Alkyd - smell strongly, thick and matte. But when applied, they spread evenly on the surface and can even hide irregularities and roughness of the surface of the product.

Stained-glass paints can not only paint a glass surface, they can create paintings and other works of art. For sophisticated craftsmen there is a choice of stained glass paint textures not only based on them.

Drawings for painting on glass with stained glass paints can be made using the following materials:

  • Silicate - the most common, they are made by melting dye and flux, which makes transparent or matte paints.
  • Lustrovaya - due to the presence of metal oxides in the paint composition, such paint has metallic or pearlescent colors. It is quite liquid, so it is used by applying a preliminary contour so that when painting the liquid does not spread and does not mix with other colors.
  • Foaming - such paint swells and peels off during firing, due to which a volumetric relief pattern of the stained glass window is obtained.
  • Icy - or granular, when firing, the granules spread and the pattern is obtained in the form of pimples. Before applying them, a drying oil or special glue is applied to the painted surface for better adhesion of the paint to the glass.
  • Matting - used to add dullness to the glass, usually used for large surfaces where paints are mixed together or for painting according to a pattern. A day after painting, the product is fired to fix the paint.
  • Marbled - usually with such a painting two colors are used, the second is applied until the first is dry. Then they are mixed with a brush or sponge, depending on what we want to see in the end. Solid marble can be obtained by dropping a little water on the surface, and then transparent paint on the water and then, on top, the desired color.
  • Craquelure - they are used to create an antique stained-glass window; such a paint, together with acrylic varnish, gives a cracking effect.
  • Pearl - paint that creates pearls. The pearl is extruded to the desired size, then rounded. After a day, it dries completely.
  • Patterned - it is liquid, based on water and alkyd resins. When using it, before painting the stained-glass window, a drop of water is first applied to the required surface. Then paint of one or two colors onto water, then stir with a brush or stick. You can blow your own pattern with the help of a cocktail tube.

Advice! If the stained-glass window is created for the first time, it is worth starting with ordinary stained-glass paints, without any effects and without firing.

  2. We put the stencil on the glass and draw a marker around the drawing. We no longer need a stencil.
  3. We draw a contour. It is better to move from the center to the edges, without rushing. We try to extrude the contour evenly and not leave gaps.
  4. The circuit should dry properly, the drying time, usually indicated on the tube. The main thing is not to rush, you can start painting the next day.
  5. The most interesting is the filling of fragments of the stained-glass window. We also do this in stages, moving from the core of the picture.
  6. Choose a paint color and paint all the fragments of this color. For light shades, mix the colors on the palette to the desired color.
  7. When the flowers are ready, proceed to the background between them. According to the idea, it is opaque, for this it is better to use varnish. It dries pretty quickly.
  8. Getting to the frame - pebbles. Smaller stones are painted with a smaller brush, large stones with a larger brush.
Now it remains to wait for the stained-glass window to dry, it depends on the paint, the drying time is indicated on the package.

Our stained glass picture is ready, it remains to put it in a frame and find it a worthy place.
