Concrete painting

Painting on concrete is done in many cases, because many people sooner or later decide to paint the walls of concrete, the ceiling surface or another part of the residential or non-residential premises. Today we will consider this issue, because the dyes eat different. It is necessary to choose them correctly and only after that apply a coating.

In this article you will receive the necessary recommendations on how to do the work, and you can find practical advice on video and photos.

We apply concrete

Paint for concrete is available for sale and it is quite possible to apply it yourself, then the final price will not be high.

Just before buying, you need to pay attention that dyes are divided into two main types:

For exterior surfacesIt withstands a more extreme environment, is not afraid of temperature extremes and high humidity.
For interior workThis paint for concrete surfaces can hold for a long time and not change its appearance only without temperature changes. Otherwise, it will peel off.

Caution: Before buying a dye, the instructions for use should be immediately studied. Pay attention to the temperature conditions of use.

Determined with the necessary tool

For comfortable, and most importantly high-quality work, the first thing you need to do is make a list of the necessary tool that will allow you to perform work in a short time:

  • Special paint brush, which makes it possible to make paint of excellent quality even in places where it is very difficult to get with a regular brush (especially with regard to corners and other similar surfaces). You need to choose a brush depending on the place of painting. It can be with a pile of various character and plan, thick and thin in size.
  • Also, we will definitely need rollers (see Paint rollers: consider in detail)to paint the surface. For more competent work, you need to purchase several types of such tools in length and thickness. Also, additional nozzles for them will not be superfluous. We pay close attention to the handles from the rollers, because the height of the surface can be very different.

Before you start painting the concrete wall, get rollers with a special telescopic handle (similar to a fishing rod), you will need it for painting different heights.

  • We purchase special containers in a hardware store for pouring paint there. Such containers are perfect for creating this or that shade of the color we need, and we will also breed it in them.
  • Special "paint brush". With it we will protect parts of the surface where we are not planning to apply a layer of paint.
  • We care about our health and clean skin. For such purposes, we need glasses and gloves, as well as possible and special protection against paint, a mask is best suited.
  • To protect the respiratory system from harmful fumes of paints and varnishes we put on a respirator.

We also advise you to take care of the presence of special shoes with spikes during painting, so as not to spoil the already painted surface in contact with new areas.

We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of epoxy paint

Painting concrete with this material will be the best option, the dye provides a long term of operation, durability for a long time, and also gives beauty if you decide to paint the floor.

Epoxy flooring
Epoxy flooring
  • Epoxy can be exposed to aggressive environmental influences and a large level of loads for a rather long period of time without harming itself and losing various characteristics.
  • Such paint does not wear off and does not disappear if it is applied in industrial design rooms, stairwells, hangars and other bases similar in purpose and patency.
  • Feel free to paint with such paint and surface in the open air, external factors are not afraid of her at all.
  • An indisputable advantage of epoxy is the ability to paint just laid concrete, so its strength properties even increase.

More advantages of epoxy paint include:

  • After prolonged use, we do not observe yellow spots;
  • It has an excellent level of protection against moisture and other liquids, waterproofing at the highest level;
  • Fits well on a concrete base;
  • It has a high level of resistance to chemicals of various nature (salts or alkalis);
  • It has a high environmental threshold.

Cons of epoxy paint:

  • By its nature, it has a two-component character, it must be prepared and mixed before application;
  • If you paint with epoxy again, be prepared for minor difficulties. Since the layer and color change to the one you need, it will not be so easy and simple.

Attention: It is necessary to paint with epoxy paint in two layers, after applying the first part to the surface, you need to wait for the next day.

We study the quality and properties of the dye of acrylic content

In general, acrylic for painting concrete is water in combination with acrylic resins mixed with various organic substances (polymers).

  • This type of coating protects the concrete surface from premature spoilage, it protects it with its organic film, which prevents various influences from reacting and somehow affecting the base.
  • Such paint forms a solid surface, therefore it is actively advised to use it in the garage and stairs (see Finishing stairs: we choose for ourselves), as well as in other similar places.

Let's look at the advantages of using acrylic paint on a concrete surface:

  • Corrosion is not scary after acrylic paint.
  • High level of protection from external environmental factors.
  • It does not harm people and animals.
  • It can be applied even to beginners in paint work.
  • Dries quickly after application.
  • Excellent waterproofing qualities of acrylic.

There are many ways to apply acrylic to the surface, you can take both a brush and a roller (see Paint rollers: consider in detail) Unlike epoxy with acrylic, it will be enough to paint in only one layer. However, no one will interfere if you put another layer for reliability and insurance. The layer dries in about a day.

We take polyurethane enamel for painting

This type of paint for concrete has a two-component base, which does not affect the quality of painting. Polyurethane enamel is taken for painting rooms both outside and on the inside.

Pay attention to the advantages of enamel:

  • It protects from external influences.
  • Very low price.
  • It can be safely applied in residential premises, no harmful effects are observed.
  • Chemicals do not affect the strength of polyurethane enamel.
  • In addition to concrete, it can also be applied to wood and metal.
  • You can get good quality gloss on your base for painting.

The minuses traditionally include the fact that the enamel dries for a very long time.

  • It is possible to paint with enamel at different temperatures, the level can drop even up to plus five degrees Celsius.Since it is two-component, the first thing we need to mix it, first the initial part, then add the next. After another stirring process, you can start painting work.
  • The process of painting with polyurethane enamel looks like this: first a thin layer is applied, without making excess leaks, then the next layer, before that we wait a day to dry the surface.

Attention: Experts recommend to work intermittently, as the enamel completely dries out from a couple of days to two weeks.

  • Such large breaks are easily explained: after a couple of days, the polyurethane ceases to adhere, you can easily move along the surface, after a week the paint acquires the desired level of strength, and after two weeks it is completely protected from chemical attack.

We turn our eyes to the primers

If for some objective reasons you cannot paint the surface with the above paints, then the primer is an excellent solution to your problem (see Primer for concrete - preparatory stage for subsequent finishing) It can be a single layer, and also applied for better adhesion to the paint itself.

Primer Concrete Plane
Primer Concrete Plane

The following types of primers for concrete surfaces can be distinguished:

  • Primer containing epoxy.
  • Primer containing polyurethane.

Why polyurethane is so interesting

The primer with the addition of polyurethane for concrete fills all pits and cracks well, makes the level of strength higher, as well as adhesion to the floor itself. Polyurethane does not care about various chemical compounds, rain, fats, etc.

We choose the advantages of such a primer:

  • Using a brush or roller without special knowledge and skills, you can put a layer of primer made of polyurethane;
  • Subsequent paint consumption is reduced;
  • It becomes strong after moisture.

Attention: If you study the name of this type of primer, you will notice that it is applied before painting enamel and polyurethane. This is true, since the component chemical composition is the same for each other.

  • Before putting the primer on concrete, it is necessary to clean the concrete from a layer of dust and dirt, and also wait for it to dry completely. We recommend that you apply this primer with a roller with a small pile of fur. Watch carefully for the absence of smudges, the surface should be of the same composition. If the absorption of the primer did not go according to plan, then you can still walk on the surface.
  • As soon as you have primed your surface, wait another twelve hours, and only then paint with a different composition.

What are the advantages we see in an epoxy primer: This kind of primer is needed for painting surfaces before epoxy. However, no one will forbid if the primer plays an independent role on the surface. It will perfectly hide all scratches and damage to the concrete surface, and also make the strength level more powerful.

Advantages of an epoxy primer:

  • Good waterproofing performance;
  • The strength of the layer increases;
  • The increased properties of protection against moisture and chemicals.

Epoxy primers can be successfully applied to metals and ceramics, as well as to substrates where moisture absorption is very low.

  • First of all, we polish the layer, clean it from dust and dirt with garbage. The surface should be clean, there should be no moisture on it.
  • To apply the epoxy primer, we take a spatula made of rubber or a roller with short hairiness. The main secret in successful work, you need to hurry, since the soil loses all its useful characteristics within half an hour, from here put the primer as quickly as possible.

How to paint the surface

To paint a concrete layer is quite simple and does not require much effort.

We present to your attention a number of steps for proper paint work:

  • First, we clean the entire surface of old layers of varnish and paint (see How to wash off the paint without problems), if they are. For the process of getting rid of chemicals, you need to take a brush of metal. In time, work takes a sufficient amount of time.
  • The next step is to clean the layer of grease and dust with dirt. Phosphoric acid will help to remove oil stains. As soon as you finish, wait for the entire concrete surface to dry, it is the quality of adhesion of the next coat of paint that depends on it.
  • We must putty pores and holes.
  • Next, put the primer so that excess moisture does not spoil the concrete.
  • As soon as the soil layer is completely dry, we can begin to paint work. Such work is best done in several approaches.

Attention: For the work to be of high quality, without fail we study the characteristics and properties of this or that paint and determine how much it will suit you.

Painting a concrete wall is not so difficult. You can do everything yourself. The main thing is not to rush to prepare a qualitatively basic plane. After all, this will be a guarantee of the durability of the applied material.
