The passage of time, without exaggeration, is gaining momentum every day, and in the bustle of everyday life we gradually cease to notice the true beauty of things. We replace concepts, and hide behind gadgets and social networks, and after all, the most beautiful has already been created.

This also concerns the modern design of houses, which can be divided into two categories: complete bad taste and ostentatious pretentiousness. In this article, we will talk about country-style walls and try to plunge into the unforgettable atmosphere of the wild west.

What is country

It is from this question that I would like to start the article. What is country? Country is primarily the style of American farmers. A typical village with its own atmosphere, which can be transferred to a modern house.

Design is a very tricky thing, and in order to create a village, it is not necessary to abandon modern technology and materials. We are not talking about a complete transfer to the farm, but only about stylization, but this is where the first pitfalls await us.

How to make the interior atmospheric and fully convey the style, but at the same time remain modern and functional?

The task is not simple, and, in principle, you can contact the design agency, and specialists will make the project of your dreams, but, firstly, it will be very expensive, and secondly, can it really compare with the repairs made and developed? do it yourself? The definite answer is no!

It will take a long and meticulous to work out a design project, because every little thing is important here, and only their combination will be able to truly convey the atmosphere of an American farm.

So, first of all, you need to understand in detail what country style is and what you need to build on.

For ease of perception, we will present the interior in the form of abstracts, and only then we will move on to a detailed study:

  • The first and most important definition of country style is naturalness. It is difficult to imagine a cowboy’s home in which there is a huge amount of plastic and chromed metal. No, there is only wood, stone, textiles and leather. Of course, we can replace some materials with reliable imitation, the main thing is that they fully convey the spirit.
  • Farm houses were built of wood, and in rare cases, of stone. Wood is the most affordable building material, and there should be as much of it in such an interior. Country style is characterized by wall and ceiling beams made of heavy beams, which today can be replaced with a lighter and cheaper imitation.
  • Rough forms - This is exactly what distinguishes country from other rustic styles. There are no smooth transitions and overflows, harsh farmers built everything with an ax, and even furniture - these are roughly knocked together wooden beams. Of course, we will not transfer this element to modern design, but it is better to refuse elegant round shapes and arched lines.
  • The spirit of antiquity. On farms they lived in large families and communities, generations succeeded each other, and the house remained the same. Over the years, he was saturated with the peculiar spirit of a harsh land. All elements of the decor are aging, but at the same time retain their purpose. We will try to transfer this interesting effect to our interior, fortunately today there are many tools with which you can age any thing, while maintaining its functionality.
  • Convenience. In a farmhouse, by definition, there should not be things that do not have a direct purpose. In this house, a person should rest with his soul and body, therefore, each piece of interior or decor (seeHow to use decorative elements for walls), must bear the semantic load. A minimum of trinkets and meaningless figurines, in the country style, it is better to replace them with vases with flowers or dishes with fruits.

Well, and of course, the invariable attribute of any village house is a stove or fireplace (seeFireplace decoration: materials and stages of work) A place that simultaneously performs several functions, they heat the house and prepare food for them, and in addition, the whole family gathers in front of the fire in the evening to relax after a hard day.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the opportunity to build a fireplace at home, and in an apartment this is completely impossible. Of course, you can replace it with imitation or use electric fireplaces, if possible. The walls of a country-style kitchen with a fireplace or stove are immediately plus a hundred points to convey the atmosphere of an American village.

There is no such possibility, well, well, we can do without a fireplace, because our interior, as we said above, does not pretend to be natural, we just focus on other elements, and leave huge fireplaces to prosperous landowners. So, we figured out the theses of style, which means it's time to talk about what building and finishing materials we will use.

Imitate the village

Since our article is not an instruction for professional designers, we will not talk about complex solutions that will require impressive financial and physical costs. As you know, beauty is in simplicity, and it is from this thesis that we will build on it.

First of all, you need to decide on the color scheme. Despite the fact that country is a style that implies only natural materials, they can also be of very different colors.

In the classical understanding of style, there are several colors that should dominate:

  • Brown. The color of an old tree smoked with smoke from a fireplace or stove. Old oak beams under the ceiling, or a brick wall, all of them darken sooner or later and acquire a brown hue.
  • Beige. Color close to natural wood. It prevails in newer homes, and it can also be used, especially in the residential area.
  • Pistachio Green. This color to any interior creates an atmosphere of comfort and tranquility, and the country style, where it is often used, is no exception.
  • Yellow. The color of the sun and ripe wheat. Not a single rustic style is complete without it.

So, we figured out the colors, but how to use them. The answer can be found by watching the video in this article, or in the photo here, and in the meantime we will move on to the finishing materials.

Wall panels

We intentionally started precisely with this material, since it was relevant hundreds of years ago, and is still used. First of all, this, of course, is a lining, with its help you can turn any room into a real design masterpiece.

A modern lining is not necessarily straight panels; there is such a variation as a block house (seeHouse Finish: Proper Work), or imitation of a rounded log. With its help, it is easiest to create rustic interiors, and even in its essence, it does not contradict the style.

Advice! Before mounting the lining, be sure to treat it with special impregnations. So the repair will last much longer, the material will not deform, and gain moisture, and besides, bugs that adore treat themselves to natural wood will bypass it.

The only drawback of this material is its relatively high price, which is far from affordable for everyone, so if your budget does not provide for such costs, you can consider no less attractive and relevant material - MDF panels.

Externally, they are difficult to distinguish from natural wood. The texture pattern is applied to the surface by hot pressing, and the base of the panel is made of crushed wood sawdust and natural glue.

Unlike lining, MDF panels are much easier to care for, and they do not require additional processing or protection. Just fix them on the crate, and the repair is ready.

Moreover, MDF can be selected in any design. Firstly, there is a huge assortment of panels that repeat the color and texture of rare woods, and secondly, you can choose mdf with imitation stone or brick, and outwardly they will look very reliable.

Did you calculate the costs of mdf, and you still don’t have enough money? There is an even more budget option that is used everywhere today - PVC panels.

They, like MDF, can carry any decorative pattern, and moreover, working with them is even easier. Pvc panels are very cheap, and no maintenance is required at all. You can wash the walls with plenty of water, and use detergents, which is especially convenient and relevant for a country-style kitchen, the walls of which are exposed to negative influences every day.

By the way, pvc is not only direct panels, you can pay attention to the plastic siding for interior decoration. As a rule, it imitates a brick or natural stone, and for a country-style design, this is very helpful.

Natural lining not only does not contradict the concept of country style, but is also considered the best option for wall decoration

Important! Siding for indoor and outdoor use may not differ externally, but at the same time, different materials and technologies are used in its manufacture. Use only the panels for their intended purpose, especially since external siding is somewhat more expensive, and it makes no sense to overpay.

Of course, wall panels are the best option for creating a rustic style, but due to a number of shortcomings, many do not want to use them in their home. Are you from such people? So, let's consider other finishes.

Wallpaper

Wallpapering the walls is probably the first thought that comes to the mind of most people who plan to repair their home. We are all used to this material since childhood, and modern wallpapers have undergone significant changes. Now they can be glued even in the kitchen and bathroom, and the variety of drawings allows you to choose an option for any design concept.

We didn’t pass the wallpaper either, because the country style, maybe take it off, the main thing is to choose the right color scheme and pattern.

By the way, wallpapers can also be with imitation of other materials, and unlike wall panels, it is much easier to work with them, and they do not hide the space, which is especially true for standard apartments, where there is a constant war for every centimeter of area.

Since the style of country tends to minimalism, and does not tolerate pretentiousness, try to choose a wallpaper with a laconic ornament, or better without it, that is, a plain material.

And of course, for each room in the house, wallpaper should be selected separately. For example, for a living room or bedroom, it is better to use non-woven wallpaper. They are closer to natural materials, and therefore can cost a little more. But for the kitchen, it is better to choose vinyl, as it is easier to wash and it does not absorb odors and is resistant to constant changes in room temperature.

As for rooms of special complexity, for example, a bathroom or an entrance hall, then this material is best abandoned. Ceramic tiles are traditionally suitable for the bathroom, and it does not contradict the style of the country, the main thing is to choose the right appearance, but today there should not be any problems with this.

Painting

Simply painted walls can also complement the overall concept.
Simply painted walls can also complement the overall concept.

This option certainly cannot be ignored. At first glance, it might seem that simply painting the walls is too simple and primitive, but think about how farmers finished their houses? It is unlikely that they glued wallpaper. Painting walls is the easiest and most reliable way to repair, and also cheap, although in some cases the last statement may be wrong.

It should be noted that paint is not necessarily a monophonic coating, today you can find an interesting coating with the effect of craquelure. This is when the wall is covered with many small cracks, under which the background color shines through.

This technique looks very impressive, but you can create it yourself, and without significant costs.

Do not want walls in cracks? Paint individual elements with craquelure paint, such as window frames or furniture facades. She will give everything around a sense of antiquity, and add an atmosphere of rustic style.

Also, do not forget about the favorite design technique - combination, this is when several finishes are used in one interior, for example, wallpapers can turn into paint, and especially complex sections are made of wall panels.

And in conclusion

Veranda, entirely made of wood, and made in the style of country

Well, here, our country-style walls are ready. Step back a few meters and admire the creation of your hands. Like? This means that the goal has been achieved, and you can begin to fill the house with nice little things that will undoubtedly emphasize the style.

In this situation, it can be vases, wall panels, plates with fruits and plates painted on the wall. The main thing is that this does not get out of the general concept, and of course you like it as the owner of a renovated house in the style of a real American farm.
