Lining the balcony is always popular

Recently, the decoration of balconies and loggias has been growing every year, since this space of an apartment becomes not just a “warehouse for unnecessary things,” but also an organic place that can be used in the process of creating a cozy and comfortable living space. Despite the appearance of various interesting materials, lining the balconies does not lose its popularity.

What material to choose?

The insulated, decorated balcony is an indisputable and attractive place in order to equip a small corner for creativity or relaxation, to create a mini-greenhouse or a place for receiving guests.
Before you start thinking about the design and interior of the balcony, you need to bring it into a fairly attractive appearance, balcony decoration wood or clapboard, this is one of the suitable options. Before starting work, you should think about what material to choose for decoration, what is best suited, what looks best.
The most optimal varieties of wood are:

  • Alder
  • Oak
  • Ash
  • Linden
  • Cedar
  • Pine
  • Spruce

Attention! The most expensive type of lining is cedar and oak, and the most popular and affordable, this is a lining made of pine.

Despite the low cost of pine options, finishing loggias and balconies with a clapboard of this type is very common, as it looks more natural, and given that all the necessary technologies are followed in its manufacture, it becomes not such a bad option, see photo.

However, despite the main positive aesthetically attractive characteristics, the pine lining has one big drawback - if the lining is heated, tarry discharge appears on its surface. That is why the decoration of balconies and loggias with a clapboard made of pine species is advisable at such a location of the balcony, in which scorching sunlight does not fall on it.
Another important criterion when choosing a material is the price and class of lining.
Among the classes of material, four types can be distinguished:

  • Highest class - premium extra. Lining of this class has a homogeneous smooth surface, in its purity incomparable with any other class. For do-it-yourself lining, it fits perfectly, but it also costs more.
  • The second class to be noted is Class A. It differs from the premium described above by a small number of knots (one or two per 1500 mm of the board surface).
  • Third grade - "B". Its differences are already noticeable even with the naked eye. Visually, such a lining does not look very good, as it may contain various microcracks and pockets of resin.
  • The last, fourth grade - "C". This is already a class of technical lining, which has both mechanical damage and through cracks. For interior decoration, a similar class is considered unsuitable.

Lining the balcony with clapboard is most often carried out using the first two classes. Class "B" should be used only if in the future you plan to paint the walls in bright colors.

Lining installation

Stage number 1. Preparatory

After you went through the construction stores and decided on the choice of material and class, you can begin the main work. And the first thing to do is to complete the preparatory phase.
Step-by-step instructions will help you to perform the job correctly, gradually, while not getting confused in the sequence of work. Before starting work, carefully read this video instruction.
In order to cover the balcony with quality, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work that will help clear the necessary surface for the main types of work.
The preparatory phase consists of the following subparagraphs:

  • We get rid of the old finish accumulated during the existence of the balcony. To do this, remove the plaster, whitewash, wallpaper and other old materials that are out of date and which will interfere with all further work.
  • If you find small cracks in your wall or ceiling, it is best to take a grinder and expand them to carefully pour them with a solution and never worry about it again.
  • All those places that you are going to cover with a lining must be treated with a special antifungal compound. At the moment, the market for such funds is very diverse.
There are such solutions that simultaneously combine several areas of biological protection against various pests.

Advice! Concluding the preparatory phase of the work, once again carefully inspect the surface of the walls, if you have missed any section.

And only after you make sure that the preparatory phase is successfully completed, proceed to the next stage - crate.

Stage number 2. Warming and crate

The next round of work that you have to do is the installation of the crate and the installation of thermal insulation systems. The second stage of work is already more complicated and requires minimal knowledge about heat-insulating materials and skills in owning a power tool.

Attention! There are two possible options for installing thermal insulation.

Installation options depend on the type of material that you decide to use:

  • Option 1. For thermal insulation, you decided to use foil-rolled web material, such as isolon, penofol or similar products. In this case, the crate is installed directly only after fixing the insulating material on the walls of the balcony.
  • Option 2. You refused foil rolls and chose mineral wool or expanded polystyrene. Here, the sequence of work is the opposite of the first option - first, the crate is installed, and only after that layers of insulation are laid in empty cells.

Lathing and thermal insulation with mineral wool:

  • This procedure has many different nuances, so you should dwell on it in more detail. In order to make a crate, it is necessary to pre-purchase a standard-type bar 40x40 or 50x50.
Both are suitable for this work procedure.

Attention! It should be remembered that for horizontal or diagonal cladding, a vertical type lathing is used, for vertical lining - a horizontal type.

  • In some cases, it is possible to crate using a metal profile, but although this option will look better and better, the cost of finishing will increase by an order of magnitude.
  • Installation at a crate professionals advise you to start with corner posts that need to be installed. Vertical bars are aligned strictly in level and are attached to the wall, while only anchor bolts are used.
Working with them is usually easier. Decorating the lining of the balcony, video instruction will help to understand the essence and clearly see how to properly make the crate.
  • After fixing the corner posts, they should be connected with the longitudinal bars. In this case, the bars must be located at a small distance from each other - approximately 50-70 cm.

Professionals recommends placing the bars as follows:

  • first set at the level of the knees,
  • the second - just above the hips,
  • the final third is at shoulder level.

Such a balcony trim with a wooden lining will make it possible to crate precisely in those places where pressure most often occurs during operation. Of course, this trick is indispensable for plastic lining, but it is also useful for wooden lining.
After you installed the crate, it is necessary to lay a layer of insulation in the resulting free cells. As a fixing element, it is best to use adhesive foam.
On top of the insulation layer, it is worth installing a heat-insulating film. Balcony insulation finished, go to the next stage.

STEP No. 3. Lining installation

Interior decoration of balconies clapboard made of wood ends at this stage. It is believed that the last stage does not cause difficulties in the process.
Installation instructions will help to consider all the details of work and make this process even easier.
In the process of the final stage, you will need to do the following:

  • It is best to start the inner lining on the balcony from any angle. Using the level, make sure that the panel of the lining was installed strictly vertically.
After you make sure that the panel is level, we fix it to the bars.
  • There are two ways of fixing the lining to the bars of the crate: either using a nail in the groove, but at the same time try not to damage the lock and hit exactly on target, or use the more modern way - fastening using special clamps.

Tip. If you decide to hammer with a nail, then first you need to “heal” the nail with a light blow of the hammer, and only then hammer it to the end using the extension.

This technique can also be used for the second method of fastening:

  • Having fixed the first panel of the lining, we attach the next one to it, while it is necessary to tap lightly on the end. At the same time, we drive a new spike into the groove of the installed lining.
  • Using the level, it is necessary to continue to monitor the position of the lining. Following these recommendations, we continue to carry out the installation of the material until the work is ready.

After the lining is installed, it is necessary to put overlays on corners, window sills and platbands. The balcony trimmed by the lining should be treated with a protective solution at the end of the work.
Thus, finishing the lining of the balcony is a simple and relatively simple way to make your balcony more attractive, comfortable and safer.
