In printing such wallpapers used cheap paint. Soon it will begin to stand out in the air, saturate the entire room and spoil the taste of all dishes.

What are the murals made of?

When this type of designer decoration only appeared as such, it was made of only two materials: paper and film. Paper was used in the same place as ordinary wallpaper. The film found a place in the kitchens, in the bathrooms, in the corridors (see Wall mural in the corridor: make a choice) and other places where paper quickly fails due to moisture, dirt and drafts.

Now the choice is richer and more diverse. Wall murals are made of fabric, paper, vinyl, satin and non-woven (see Non-woven photo wallpaper: how to choose and stick) We will analyze each of the species a little lower, but for now it’s worth clarifying two details.

Regardless of the material, all wallpapers are divided into self-adhesive and not. For the second, you need to buy glue separately. On self-adhesive, it is enough to remove the protective film from the back and proceed to the sticker.
Also, regardless of the material, wall murals are simplex and duplex. That is, consisting of one or two layers. In two-layer murals, the layers are divided into a lining and a front side and can be made of different materials, which gives them new properties.

Let's look at some of the most used materials:

Paper mural	The oldest and cheapest option. Significantly inferior to other materials and essentially differs little from ordinary wallpapers and look a little better than a bare concrete wall. They quickly wear out and are afraid of moisture.They are produced only in a simplex version without an adhesive layer. The technology of the sticker is no different from paper wallpaper (see Let's consider how to glue paper wallpapers correctly) The wall and the back of the roll are smeared with glue, after which the paper is neatly pressed against the wall and smoothed. A lot depends on the consistency of the glue and its quantity. If it’s small, it will stick poorly and fall off, and if a lot and the wallpaper is very saturated, bubbles can form, stains on the front side, which will remain after drying. Attention: The cloth which is strongly wet from glue can scatter in hands.
Non-woven	The most popular and popular to date. Non-woven material is soft and lightweight, made on the basis of cellulose filaments and slightly resembles paper, although in many respects it is noticeably better. They can be washed, but they poorly resist abrasion and other physical damage. Glue them easily (see How to glue non-woven wallpaper correctly), anoint the wall with glue and immediately attach the canvas. They fit well and do not bubble. The main advantage is that non-woven fabric can be stretched, fitting unevenness. Therefore, the wall under it is not necessary to bring to an ideal state. In the duplex version, non-woven often serves as a substrate for the vinyl front side. Gluing such wallpaper should be exactly the same as described above.
Vinyl	Vinyl, or polyvinyl chloride - a synthetic material, a type of plastic, is widely used for various purposes in many industries. Resistant to moisture, dirt and physical damage, easy to clean. The front side can be smooth or foamed. Vinyl wallpapers with a smooth surface are also called satin and are often classified as a separate category, although the remaining properties remain, as in vinyl. The material is dense and does not stretch at all, which can cause difficulties when sticking on an uneven surface. Single-layer vinyl murals are also called PVC films. Often they are made in a self-adhesive version having an adhesive base. In full duplex, vinyl always acts as the front layer. And for the substrate, paper or non-woven is used. This is done in order to ensure ease of sticking. Paper based murals are heavy and poorly glued. Their only advantage remains great strength. The gluing technology is the same as for paper photo wallpaper, only the additional weight of the vinyl layer should be taken into account. Wallpaper with a non-woven backing is lighter than paper, easier to assemble and therefore more popular.
Fabric	Wall mural can be called the reincarnation of medieval tapestries, which decorated the walls of castles and royal palaces. This is the most expensive and most type of photo wallpaper, not inferior to other elite types of decorative decoration. For production, mainly natural fabric (silk, velveteen, velor, velvet, etc.) is used. Widespread printing of photo wallpaper on the canvas used to paint pictures. Self-adhesive single-layer fabric murals are rare. Classic single-layer dry versions are superimposed on a wall coated with glue. In a duplex form, a non-woven fabric, PVC or paper is used as a substrate for the fabric. With a non-woven backing, the wallpapers are the lightest and most comfortable. Paper is stronger and can cover minor surface defects. PVC backing usually comes in a self-adhesive version. The main advantage of fabric photowall-paper in the made impression of luxury and grace. But in addition to its own high cost, it also requires careful preparation of the walls, which you should not save on. Otherwise, having spent, you can remain dissatisfied with the final result.

The surface texture of the photo wallpaper greatly affects not only the decorative appearance of the impression of the picture.Moisture resistance and resistance to physical impact directly depend on it. When the murals were made only of vinyl and paper, there was only one smooth surface.

Later, a laminated layer was added to protect the paper from moisture, but it was also smooth. Now the situation has changed and in an effort to attract a client and add more expressiveness to the image, mural manufacturers have developed several types of textures.

Plaster	The surface is not even, but with the smallest roughness and scratches, as if shabby with fine sand. It completely imitates the appearance of ordinary plaster. It is made on vinyl or non-woven. Sometimes it is additionally laminated for better preservation. Images of medieval frescoes from temples and castles look on the surface thus treated like real ones. Dust is almost not collected on textures, and cleaning or washing such a surface is as easy as smooth.
Sand	A relief surface imitating large grains of sand. It is subdivided into small (size of grains of sand 1-2 mm) and large texture (up to 5 mm). Sand with a fine texture is made on a vinyl or non-woven base, 1-3 mm thick. Coarse surfaces are made only on a thick layer (5 mm) of foamed vinyl. This texture perfectly hides the irregularities of the walls. Minor physical damage is poorly visible on it. But it is very quickly polluted and accumulates dirt in the depressions of the relief. Cleaning and washing such surfaces is a significant problem.
Painting	Traces and stains from brush strokes or a palette knife left by a careless artist are clearly visible on this texture. These murals look like real pictures. Reproductions of Renaissance masterpieces as well as contemporary creations look like real ones on them. Depth of smears can reach up to 3 mm. The surface is made of vinyl, satin, non-woven. You can create a matte shade or give the surface a glossy sheen. This texture is relatively easy to clean, although dust can accumulate in the deepest strokes and lines. The texture visually smoothes the smooth irregularities of the wall, but is intolerant of cracks and potholes, which should be previously repaired.
Canvas	The same similar motif on an artistic theme, but this time not brush strokes on a thick layer of paint are imitated, but the texture of the canvas itself, on which the picture will be painted. The surface is almost smooth with a glossy or matte sheen. It can be created on all types of material, except for fabric. This is the smallest of textures, and therefore the most demanding of the perfect evenness of the wall on which it will be glued. Also, it practically does not hide irregularities and bends.

Modern murals based on the materials from which they are made are in many ways similar to ordinary wallpapers. But unlike the latter, they are not painted in primitive patterns and flowers.

They carry a meaningful plot image with their own artistic value. Thus, they significantly go beyond the scope of purely utilitarian functionality, becoming an important attribute in the design of the interior and its aesthetic perception.
