How to glue non-woven wallpaper

How to glue wallpaper on a non-woven basis, is of interest to many people. After all, the material itself looks great and has fairly acceptable characteristics. But not everyone can glue it. How to glue the non-woven wallpaper, we will tell below, complete instructions will be given on this issue.

Work Execution Rules

Wallpapering on a non-woven basis is done in several stages. It is extremely important to properly prepare the base plane. Otherwise, the coating will not repeat the evenness and it will immediately catch the eye.

You can look at some moments of work on a photo and video. Moreover, everything can be perfectly done with your own hands.

Preparation for pasting with non-woven wallpaper

Preparation is not difficult, but responsible. If done incorrectly, you will be very disappointed. So take it seriously.

Tools that will be needed for pasting:

  • Laser level or plumb;
  • Roulette about 5 m long;
  • Long-nap specialized roller;
  • 2 spatulas: plastic with a soft end for rolling wallpaper and narrowed metal
  • Brush for smoothing wallpaper after gluing;
  • A well-sharpened knife to cut wallpaper is a clerical one;
  • Specialized mesh to rid the surface of the roller from excess glue;
  • Two instances of buckets - one designed for clean water, the other for diluting glue;
  • Pencil;
  • Foam sponge.

Wall preparation with marking

Wallpapering is preceded by the stage of preparing the walls (see Preparing the walls for wallpapering: do it yourself) Non-woven wallpaper fits well on a wide variety of surfaces.

Attention: If it is planned to glue non-woven wallpaper on a painted wall, the color of the paint should be even and as close as possible to the color of the wallpaper. Otherwise, it can shine through the wallpaper, due to their small thickness.

  • The initial stage of preparing walls for gluing is to clean their surfaces from previous wallpapers. Next, clean the old paint (see How to wash off the paint without problems) and dirt and begin to level them, eliminate defects. An alternative to paint stripping is to treat the wall surface with medium-sized sandpaper, but this is less preferable. At the end of the preparation, a smooth surface is treated with a primer.
    Non-woven wallpaper is applied in an end-to-end manner due to the fact that they have smooth edges.
  • The advantage of this method of pasting is the imperceptible to the eye difference between adjacent panels - they are perceived as a single canvas. In most cases, non-woven wallpaper is specially issued in the form of wide panels.

Once the walls are ready, you can begin the procedure for marking them.

  • It’s worth starting to paste the wallpaper from the corner of the room, so the marking starts exactly from there: along the wall at a distance of a meter from the selected angle, a flat vertical reference line is drawn using the laser level or plumb line.
  • Further, features parallel to the one drawn using the level are applied along the entire wall in increments of one meter. It is necessary that during further gluing the panels lay exactly vertically.
  • The choice of a meter-long step is explained by the fact that typical non-woven wallpaper has a slightly larger width - thus, when pasting, a certain margin of width is left, which is necessary to create high-quality joints at the corners of the room.

Cooking wallpaper

Following the marking of the walls, the preparation of the wallpaper for the gluing procedure begins. It is preferable to cut the blank strips for all the walls of the room at a time.

Attention: Before preparing each blank of wallpaper, you need to check the height of the wall at various points in increments of twenty to thirty centimeters. You can cut a new blank by making sure that the wall everywhere has a similar height.

So:

  • If there is no complicated pattern on the wallpaper, the task of cutting does not create any special difficulties. However, wallpaper with a large or complex pattern in the cutting process will require fitting. The size of the fit for each particular type of wallpaper is shown in the icon. When marking such wallpapers, it is necessary to monitor the coincidence of the pattern on adjacent panels - this is achieved by a vertical shift of the resulting workpieces in the right direction. Otherwise, you will have to add pieces of wallpaper from the bottom or top.
  • If the ceiling in the apartment is standard, you can leave a reserve of 10-15 cm high when cutting wallpaper with complex patterns into pieces. However, in the case of high ceilings, this method will be useless.

The following example is intended to clarify the calculations.

  • Let it be planned in a certain room to paste wallpaper with a pattern. The pictographic designation on the label indicates a fit size of 48 centimeters. The standard floor-to-ceiling distance is two and a half meters.
  • In this case, the duration of each of the cut blanks must necessarily exceed 2.5 m and at the same time be a multiple of the number 48. Accordingly, the optimal length of the wallpaper blank will be 2.88 m.
  • A roll of wallpaper is rolled out on the floor, thoroughly washed, face down. The calculated value is measured from the edge (in the given case, it is 2 m 88 cm), a notch is made using a clerical knife. By serif, the wallpaper is bent so that the edges of the bent part of the roll and the rest of the panel exactly coincide with each other. If the alignment of the edges is successful, you can cut the canvas along the fold line completely.
  • Further, by the same principle, lay out another sheet of wallpaper and check the correctness of the fitting of the drawings by bending them around the edges. It is convenient to control the combination of a pattern by its largest and most noticeable elements. If both blanks coincide, proceed to further cutting. The roll is rolled strictly from one side to receive cuts for the entire room.

Adhesive preparation

For pasting with non-woven wallpaper, it is important to purchase high-quality specialized glue. To prepare it for direct use, it is advisable to use the instructions.

  • Adhesive powder is slowly added to a small amount of water with vigorous stirring.
  • The mixture is infused for some time, after which it is re-mixed and subjected to removal from lumps. The resulting composition is suitable for use.

Procedure Steps

Wallpaper should be glued to the prepared surface. Preparation includes puttying (see How to putty walls under the wallpaper yourself) and a good primer, which should be dried.

So:

  • If there are metal protrusions on the wall, then oil paint should be applied to them, otherwise over time a rust stain will appear on the wallpaper. It is advisable to use the same primer on all walls, so that the behavior of the glue does not change depending on the primer. In this case, the wallpaper will stay the same after gluing.
  • Work on walls should only be done if floor finish and the ceiling has already been made. It is better to protect the finished floor with some material like a film.
  • At the beginning of gluing the walls you need to primer with glue. For this, a special primer glue is used, which is made more liquid than that used for gluing. It is necessary to make such a primer if thick wallpaper is used, or if gluing is carried out in the heat.
  • It is worth paying attention to the fact that the gluing is carried out in an enclosed space that cannot be ventilated another day after gluing.

Important: In natural light it is much easier to notice irregularities in the form of various bubbles or folds than in artificial light.

  • First of all, you need to paste wallpaper on large walls, and lastly, in areas that do not catch your eye, for example, behind furniture. There you can apply the remaining trim from the wallpaper.
  • Wallpaper is glued using a level. They are given a vertical, and lines a meter and a half long are drawn on it. Sticking should start from the corner. The line is drawn, slightly departing from the corner: from the limiting protruding point with the width of the tube minus 0.5-1 cm. This is done in case of unevenness, since in most apartments the walls are imperfect: they are often tilted in some direction, otherwise and in two directions at the same time. In apartments with round corners, a vertical line is drawn in the middle of the corner. There they begin sticking.
  • Dilution of glue begins with the fact that a pack of glue is gradually poured into a pre-prepared bucket of water for a minute, constantly mixing the composition. After a short period of time, the glue swells, after which it can be stirred again, after which it must be allowed to stand for a while.
  • It is not forbidden to make the glue more or less thick depending on the specific situation. For example, for thick, heavy wallpapers it is better to use thick glue. Thick wallpapers absorb glue better, and therefore it is easier to move them. This is one of the most important advantages: it should be easy and convenient to work with glue.
  • For its storage, it is recommended to use a special paint bath: this is the easiest way to put a roller in the glue to get rid of its excess. The work can take several days, but it’s not scary, because good glue does not deteriorate soon. If the glue begins to harden, it is enough to mix it again; in the event of an unpleasant odor, it is better to prepare a new solution.
  • Cloths of non-woven wallpaper are not covered with glue. First you need to apply glue to the wall, in the area where the canvas will be located, and then the wallpaper itself is glued. A lot of glue is better not to use.
  • When gluing, the roll of wallpaper unfolds, after which the canvas rises up. A small area should be left in the ceiling area in case of unevenness in the ceiling and walls. Wallpaper paste on the drawn lines, and then smooth them with your hand. Cutting of wallpaper before gluing is allowed. The length of the cut strips should be adequate to the height of the ceiling. If the canvas turned out to be too long, then it can be cut; if the length is a little short, this can be hidden with the baseboard.
  • Where the wall converges with the ceiling and the floor, a larger spatula is fixed almost unidirectionally with it. With it, with a sharp knife at the top and bottom, excess wallpaper is cut off. If in some places the blade is not cut, the knife is carried out again, in no case without changing the fixed position of the spatula. In the corners of the room, instead of a large spatula, use a small one.
    If there are skirtings made of expanded polystyrene in the room, pruning must be done very carefully to avoid damage to the skirting board. The same applies to trimming wallpaper for gluing in spaces with suspended ceilings.
  • After preliminary alignment of the panels, the wallpaper should be smoothed out by hands, removing air bubbles and bloating from glue from under them.Good glue is invisible on non-woven wallpaper, but may appear on a painted ceiling (see How is painting the wallpaper on the ceiling) Wallpaper glue is removed with a damp kitchen sponge. The disposal of air bubbles is carried out using a wallpaper spatula. By smooth vertical movements from top to bottom, they press the center of the canvas, then from the middle smooth the wallpaper down and to the sides to smooth the edges. Particular attention is required to dock panels and corners of the room.
  • In the process of smoothing the wallpaper glue in some places begins to dry out. In this case, it is necessary to raise the cloth and apply the adhesive again. Next, you need to lower the wallpaper, smooth it again and push it to the wall.
  • In the event of wrinkles in the process of smoothing the canvas, it is necessary to raise part of the fabric to the fold to be removed, smooth it again and press it against the wall.
  • Cloths must be connected strictly vertically. After gluing the first panel, glue is applied to the wall with a brush for the subsequent strip. Then the roll of wallpaper is placed against the wall, unwind it and move the upper edge of the wallpaper to the side of the ceiling, until the selected elements of the picture coincide with each other. After joining the edges of the paintings and smoothing the wallpaper with your hands, trimming is performed from the upper and lower sides. After that, the wallpaper is smoothed with a spatula.

Attention: In the process of pasting wallpaper with print, special attention must be paid.

  • After gluing the first strip, the wall is smeared with glue for the other. Now substitute the roll, unwind it; lift the upper edge of the panel to the ceiling, and then move it to the sides until part of the figure fits into place. Connect the edges of the canvases, smooth them with your hands, cut them from the bottom or top as necessary. It remains to re-smooth the wallpaper with a spatula.
  • If the piece on top turned out to be excessively long, rough cutting is done rough, and after smoothing - the final one.
Place for breakersTrimming on the places of twisted outlets and switches: we find out with our hand the voids under the glued wallpaper and cut the crosses there. Finishing trimming is done on dry wallpaper (wet is harder to cut) .To this end, a small spatula is inserted to the edge of the mounting box along which, as if by a ruler, all that is removed is removed.
Pipe trimmingTrimming in the pipe area is more difficult.
  • First of all, it is necessary to lean the canvas against the wall covered in advance with glue up to the pipe, if it is located under the ceiling; from there, under a small spatula, make a vertical cut. Its length should be adequate to the distance between the pipe and the ceiling.
  • If the notch is too short, lengthen it. Then, a small longitudinal incision is made in the lower part of the cut, when the canvas last rises to the ceiling.
  • When the alignment of the wallpaper near the pipe with a spatula is completed, an approximate undercut with an asterisk is performed.
  • Following the final smoothing to the pipe pipe, the final trimming is done.
Near the windowNear the window wallpaper is acceptable to stick in pieces or a single strip. In the latter version, the window sill and slopes will have to be trimmed.
  • Pokleyka begins as usual: the wall is covered with glue, a bundle of wallpaper is pressed against it, unwound and laid on the wall; its edge is connected to the edges of neighboring bands, the wallpaper is smoothed out manually.
  • Then, pruning is performed along the window opening: a well-sharpened knife blade extends to the limit, sticks into the wallpaper and cuts them around the perimeter of the cavity without a spatula. A few unnecessary millimeters can stick out, and then it is possible to get rid of them the next day by sewing along the bevel line with sandpaper. This should be done only after the wallpaper dries up: removing the excess will not work on the damp.

In the cornerThe first strip protrudes slightly on the other side of the room, forming an overlap.The second is also glued in the same way.

Attention: If the overlap of two canvases turned out to be too small, you need to smooth and press the canvases to the wall, and if too large, perform additional trimming: otherwise the corner will look untidy.

  • It is carried out in this way: a spatula is installed in the corner, codirectionally to the wall with the upper canvas. After this, a cut is made of two layers at once. The cut-off part is taken from the upper canvas, it is bent, and trim is taken from the lower canvas.
  • The last step: applying the adhesive mass with a brush in the corner itself and gluing the paintings. For corners, do not regret glue, because the corners of the room freeze easily, as a result of which the wallpaper can begin to fall off. It is advisable to pull them a little, stepping 1-2 mm around the corner.

If you need a narrow strip of wallpaper for gluing in the corner, you can get it this way: the wallpaper of the required length is folded into a tube, placed on a hard surface, the desired width is measured, and then the roll is cut with a knife.

If the wallpaper is still swollen after drying, this can be partially corrected. To do this, purchase a syringe with a needle and place the glue inside. You will need glue of a less thick consistency so that it can pass through the needle. Where a bubble has formed and the canvases do not adhere to the wall, pierce the hole, let out air, introduce liquid into the hole and press the canvas.

How to glue non-woven wallpaper you now know. Their price is not as high as a wonderful effect with high-quality finish. The most important thing is not in a hurry and do everything carefully.
