How to stick drywall to the wall yourself
In recent years, drywall has become such a popular material that even grandmothers and children have heard about it. With its help, objects of varying complexity are finished and built, but the most important thing is the affordable price, which allows you to carry out cosmetic repairs in a house or apartment with minimal cost.
In this article, we will talk about one of the methods of mounting this material, namely, about how to paste drywall in the wall. So let's get started.

To glue or not to glue, that is the question
If you once did the repair yourself, or just watched a lot of repair programs on TV, you probably know that there can be two ways to install drywall. The first is the installation on the crate. The method is more time-consuming and expensive, which also steals a few cherished centimeters from the total area of the room.
The second method is gluing drywall to the wall, which is more affordable and simple, although it has several disadvantages. Here a reasonable question may arise: why build complex frames and spend money on it when glue is much cheaper and easier?
It's simple, each method has its advantages and disadvantages, but since today we are talking about the adhesive method, let's look at it from all sides.
Advantages of the adhesive installation method
So:
- Due to the fact that the drywall is laid directly on the walls, without the mediation of the frame, a significant saving in space is obtained. Often, the frame is able to steal from a total area of up to 20 centimeters, which is a lot, especially if the repair is done in an initially small room.
- Cost-effectiveness. In order to glue a sheet of drywall, you will need a minimum of supplies. Only drywall and the glue itself. If you mount the frame, then in addition to this you will still need profiles, dowels, and an additional set of tools.
- Speed. Installation without a frame is carried out in a matter of hours. Unlike the second installation method, which can take several days. In proof of our words, we suggest you watch the drywall on the glue to the wall of the video, which shows how quickly the master does his job.
- Simplicity. In order to build a framework, you will need not only a tool, but also certain knowledge. With the adhesive method of installation, no knowledge is unnecessary, and in this article, a little below will be detailed instructions, after reading which you can safely take on the job.
Important! Glue mounting, possible only if your walls are relatively flat. Before gluing drywall to the wall, check the evenness of the walls, if the differences do not exceed two centimeters, then you can glue, if the differences are larger, you will have to either level the surface, or use mounting on a special frame.
This mounting method also has its drawbacks, some of which make such fastening simply impossible.
disadvantages
So:
- Inability to hide communications. The frame allows you to hide not only electrical wires under drywall (seeHow to hide wires from the TV on the wall), but also heating pipes. With the adhesive method, you will not have such an opportunity, so the passage through the walls of communications needs to be thought out in advance.
- With a large curvature of the walls, this installation method can no longer be used. This is especially true for old apartment buildings, and for private buildings built independently. The maximum allowable difference is 2 centimeters, and only it can be leveled with small inserts, without prejudice to the finish.
- Do not use heavy finishes on glued drywalle.g. ceramic tiles (seeFacing with gypsum plasterboard: do it right), which will exert significant pressure on the surface, and over time it will simply tear off the sheet from the base.
- In the voids formed by the crates of the frame, insulation is often laid. In this case, this will not work. Of course, if we are talking about internal house partitions, then there is no such problem, but if your wall goes outside, then, as a rule, it will be very cold, and drywall, it will not add heat.
Important! If you are gluing drywall to a street wall, only take out moisture-resistant sheets, because due to the constant bridges of cold, condensation may appear on the surface, which will eventually destroy a simple drywall.
So, we figured out the pros and cons. Now carefully correlate the pros and cons, and decide whether this installation method is suitable for your specific situation or not.
If suitable, then you can proceed directly to the installation, and to the most important question: what can be glued drywall to the wall.
Preparation and installation
As you know, any repair begins with thorough preparation, and before gluing drywall to the wall, you need to prepare the base. This process is very simple and does not require a lot of effort or money.
The main enemy of all wall finishes is condensation. It is formed due to temperature differences. As a rule, the walls in a house are colder than the general temperature, especially if they go outside. As a result of this, the surface often becomes wet, and if the moisture that has formed has nowhere to evaporate, then it grows into mold.
There are two ways to get rid of wall wetting:
- Insulate the wall outside. The method is expensive and time consuming. In addition, the wall does not have to be very cold in order for condensation to appear. Sometimes a difference of only a few degrees is enough, and it is clear that because of such a trifle, it makes no sense to invest a lot of money in external insulation.
- To treat the walls with a special primer or impregnation of deep penetration. This method is cheaper and no less effective. Impregnations will not be able to stop the appearance of moisture, but the antiseptics that are part of them do not allow fungus and mold to develop on the walls, which is exactly what we need in this situation.
But, before gluing drywall to a concrete wall and or treating it with antiseptics, a thorough cleaning is necessary. The cleaner the surface, the more reliable the primer will protect it.
It is necessary to remove from the wall all the remnants of the old finish to the plaster itself. In this case, the plaster can not be touched. Cement itself is part of the wall, and the primer will act on it. Remove wallpaper or paint (seeHow to remove paint from the walls: the secrets of the masters), here they can impede the impregnation of the surface. You can read about how to do this better on our website, where everything is described in detail and even shown.
So, we sorted out the old finish, and you can pick up the paint roller and primer. Spread the liquid evenly over the entire area, and here the rule applies that you will not spoil the porridge with oil. Do not spare the impregnation, it is better now to spend an extra thousand rubles on it than to remake all the repairs in a couple of winter seasons.
Now, the surface must be allowed to dry. Depending on the ambient temperature and the thickness of the primer layer, this can take from an hour to several days, but do not rush and start working with a surface that is not yet completely dry. Adhesion in this case will be much worse, and there is a high probability that the glue will simply move away from the wall.
Well, that’s all, the surface has dried up, which means you can go to the main stage.
Installation
And before proceeding to a detailed description of the gluing process, we suggest you watch the video in this article, on which the specialist answers the question of whether drywall can be glued to the wall and shows in detail how to do it better. Also, some stages are shown in the photo, and they, including including help to visually understand the whole technology.
In fact, the technology is simple to the impossible, and many words for its description will not be needed. Just take a sheet of moisture-proof drywall, and cut it to the size we need, if of course it is required at all. Now we take glue which is previously diluted to the necessary consistency, and put it on the back side of the sheet.
You can do this in any way: crosswise, randomly or in even stripes, the main thing is that the maximum part of the sheet is covered, and the distance between the adhesive strips does not exceed 30 centimeters.
Now, we lift the sheet and press it firmly against the wall. The glue sets fast enough, and just hold the sheet for 3-4 minutes and you can let go. We do the same with steel sheets.
Advice! Many are interested in what to stick drywall to the wall. We will answer, for these purposes there is a special glue, on a cement basis. Take it precisely, since it is already ideally designed specifically for fixing drywall.
That's all, it remains only to patch up the joints between the sheets, but this is the topic of a separate article, which, by the way, is the same on our website.
As you can see, the process is not complicated, and does not take much time, although not in all situations it can be used. But if you carefully read the criteria for choosing the method of attachment, and your situation allows you to install without a frame, then consider that you are very lucky.
