We prepare the ceiling for painting
How to prepare the ceiling for water-based paintNow consider in detail. Below you will find the full instructions. Before painting the ceiling to obtain an even and beautiful coating, it is very important to properly prepare the ceiling for painting.
Attention: Before starting work, it is also recommended to prepare the room itself for repair work. In most cases, you can not do without soaking the surface of the ceiling, so it is better to de-energize the wiring in the room. In addition, it is advisable to cover the walls, windows and doors with foil if it is not planned to repair them.
In the process of preparing the ceiling for painting, the following steps can be distinguished:
- Cleaning;
- Sealing joints, cracks and defects;
- Padding (cm. How to primer the ceiling: we understand in stages);
- Puttying;
- Grinding.
To prepare the ceiling for painting, you will need some tools and materials:
- Ladder;
- Grinder or grinder;
- Spatulas (large, small and angular);
- Mixer nozzle for a drill;
- Roller (seePaint rollers: consider in detail);
- Brush;
- Construction knife;
- Protective gloves, goggles and a respirator;
- Serpyanka;
- Primer;
- Putty.
Surface cleaning from previous coatings
At the first stage of preparation, the ceiling should be cleaned from the previous coating.
- In cases where the ceiling is whitewashed with lime, it is washed off with ordinary water. To do this, wet the surface with a roller, wait until it is saturated, and carefully clean the whitewash layer with a spatula. After finishing work, wipe the ceiling with a damp cloth.
- If the ceiling coating is a water-based paint, and it holds well, then the paint may be left. To check how firm the paint is, hold a small area of the surface with water (preferably warm), wait a few minutes and try to clean the coating. A weak, easily damaged paint layer, it is better to clean it off by rinsing it with water, or remove it with a spatula.
- If the ceiling was painted with moisture-resistant paint, then to remove it, it is better to use a grinder, or a drill with a special nozzle. In the process of such work, a large amount of fine dust is formed, so for protection it is necessary to use a respirator and special safety glasses.
- To remove old oil paint, it is better to use a special wash. It is recommended to work with this tool in a respirator, goggles and rubber gloves. Do not forget that solutions to remove resistant coatings can be quite toxic, so the room should be well ventilated.
- In order to remove old wallpaper from the ceiling, they need to be moistened with warm water and after they are soaked, remove the canvas with a spatula. You can also purchase a special solution for removing wallpaper (see How to remove old paper wallpapers without problems) It will help significantly save time and effort.
- If the ceiling was finished with special decorative polystyrene boards, then they can also be removed with a spatula. Attention should also be paid to removing residual glue, with which the plates were attached to the ceiling.
Sealing joints, cracks and other defects
After cleaning the surface from the previous coating, we proceed to the next stage of preparation of the ceiling before painting - we close up all noticeable surface defects.
- The cracks need to be deepened along the entire length, be sure to prime and putty after drying. Large cracks are best reinforced with a special self-adhesive tape - serpyanka. In the future, this will prevent the re-occurrence of cracks. If there are any protruding irregularities, they can be knocked down with a hammer, hammer or any other improvised tool.
- If the ceiling is finished with plasterboard sheets (see Facing the ceiling with drywall: do it right), it is necessary to close the joints between the sheets and the place of screwing in the screws. If the screw is screwed in too deep, it must be unscrewed, and then, at a certain distance from the previous hole, tighten a new one.
- Also, at the joints of the sheets of drywall, you need to embroider the seams. To do this, using a construction knife at an angle of about 45 degrees, you need to cut off about 3 mm of the edge from each drywall sheet.
Attention: It is worth noting that drywall sheets can have a different kind of edge. Sheets with a thinned and semicircular thinned edge require the use of sickle and putty, and sheets with a rounded edge do not require the use of reinforcing tape, but only putty.
- Next, you need to process the seams and the place of screwing the screws with a primer. After the primer has completely dried, it is necessary to fill the seams, including those near the wall, and the recesses from the self-tapping screws using putty. It is better to use a putty specifically designed for drywall (see What putty putty drywall. Analysis of the proposals of construction markets).
- After waiting for the putty to dry, you should glue the seams with a sickle. In places of intersection it must be glued with an overlap.
- After that, you need to cover up the sickle and the remaining small defects with putty and, after drying, wipe the irregularities with the help of a grinding bar. All these actions will prevent further the appearance of cracks at the joints.
Attention: When filling the corners and joints of the ceiling with the wall, it is most convenient to use a corner spatula.
Primed ceiling surface
After smoothing out small irregularities, the next stage of preparation is the priming of the entire surface of the ceiling.
- To do this, you can use a roller for processing the main area and a brush for processing corners. If the ceiling area is large, then it is better to purchase a spray gun.
- Priming is a very important step, as it provides high adhesion of materials to each other.
Caution: When buying, it is better to choose a deep penetration liquid. She will serve much longer.
The primer is ready-made. Consumption and conditions of use are indicated on the packaging.
Ceiling Putty
At this stage of the preparation of the ceiling, you will need putty (see Which putty is better - features of the choice of mixture) You can buy both ready-made putty and a dry mix for self-cooking. The mixture for self-cooking must be diluted with water in strict accordance with the instructions.
- You will need a breeding tank and a special mixer nozzle for a drill. Ready putty, respectively, does not require dilution and is completely ready for use. This option is very convenient, as it saves time and effort.
- The gypsum board ceiling is even from the beginning, so it is enough to putty it once with a finishing putty for gypsum board.
- Drywall ceiling, i.e. concrete, you have to putty twice. For puttying you will need large and small spatulas, as well as an angular spatula. The puttying process is not very complicated, however, it requires certain skills.
- A small spatula from a container with a putty mixture should be taken in a small amount and distributed over the working edge of a large spatula. To obtain a uniform layer, it is better to hold the spatula at a certain angle to the ceiling. The thickness of the applied layer should be no more than 2-3 mm. It is better to putty, making cross movements, while observing the same pressure on the spatula.
- The drying time is indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging.
Grinding
After the putty has dried, the bumps should be wiped using grinding.
- To identify irregularities, you need to shine on the ceiling with a light bulb or a flashlight - hollows and protruding defects will cast a shadow, and you can fix the defects. After that, you can apply the finishing layer of putty.
- After the putty has completely dried, the remaining minor defects and scratches should also be sanded with fine-grained sandpaper.
- During grinding, use a respirator and goggles to protect against fine dust.
Puttying and polishing the ceiling for painting should be done more carefully than under the wallpaper, as the paint will not be able to hide defects with poor preparation.
It is also better to purchase a grinder for this work, then you will do everything quickly and efficiently.
Caution: Before painting, the ceiling is primed again to remove dust from the ceiling surface and ensure good adhesion of materials.
How to prepare a drywall ceiling for painting, you already know, it is easier in contrast to concrete. Take a look at the photo and make a work plan. After this, you can proceed slowly.
