Paints for creating a stained-glass window are divided in their composition:

  • Water based paints - they are liquid and easily washed off with water, so after creating the picture, the product is fired in the oven at a temperature of about 150 degrees. They are well suited for large surfaces and products that often come in contact with water. Often they are used for children's drawing, as they are environmentally friendly.
  • Alcohol Based Paints - they are liquid, but quite resistant, so they do not burn after application. They are very shiny and bright, look good on smooth surfaces. If you suddenly need to erase the paint, it is removed with acetone or solvent.
  • Paints on a varnish basis (or solvent) - they are quite thick and therefore dry longer than other paints. Drying, they become smooth, their shades are less bright, but glossy. Solvent-based paints evenly coat the surface and can obscure small roughnesses or roughnesses in the plane.

Many professionals simply paint on acrylic (water-based) and alkyd (organic-based) paints:

  • Acrylic - diluted with water and due to this quickly dry. They are used on any flat surface. When completely dried, they are burned, and the product calmly tolerates washing with water. Their smell is weak and does not hurt the eyes.
  • Alkyd - thick and flowing with a pungent strong odor. Due to their consistency, such paints themselves spread on the surface in an even layer. Some of them dry for a long time, others quickly and get divorced only with special thinners. Such paints do not burn and are used for furniture.

Important! When applying stained glass paints with your own hands, you should remember that you can apply them to dishes only from the outside, and when using for interior items, they should not be exposed to direct sunlight.

Paints for stained glass painting are also divided according to their fixing on products.

They are:

  • Dockable - after drying the paint, the product is fired in the oven, from about half an hour to an hour at a temperature of up to 150 degrees. After such procedures, you can safely wash it even with cleaning and detergents, without fear of erasing the paint.

In order to find out at what temperature and how much time you need to burn the existing paint, you just need to carefully study the label on the jar of paint. Each paint and company has its own firing standards.

The only drawback of such paints may be their almost opacity. The surface of the product will be matte and not very bright.

  • Not fixed - the paint on the product is not fixed by firing. It dries itself at room temperature. Different paints, depending on the manufacturer's firm, dry differently, from several hours to several days. You can also find out the drying time of a certain paint by examining the label on the jar.

Such colors are bright, rich and transparent enough to, for example, painted glass on the door, let in enough light. For beginning artists, it is recommended to start with such paints, since not everyone can immediately correctly cope with firing.

After the paint has completely dried on the product, it can be washed, but without soaking and detergents. If you suddenly need to erase the paint, only a solvent special for the paint can do this.

  • Sticks or transfer paints - these are paints that, when dried, form a thin film, which, if desired, can be glued to any smooth surface. Over time, it can be re-glued several times to different places.

Such paints are water-based and therefore safe for children. They really like to create with such paints, and then stick on their favorite things or furniture. If such a picture is glued to the dishes, after firing it can be used and washed.

  • Baked granules - the newest type of volumetric paints for stained glass painting. They are produced in the form of small multi-colored granules and are used as decor for stained glass.

If we decorate glass, we glue the granules using a special glue intended for this type of paint, wait until it dries and burn for several minutes.

Advice! Using stained glass paint in granules, be aware that matte colors bake faster than transparent ones.
