Cabinet finishing: a non-standard approach
People of many scientific and creative professions prefer to work in their home office, where all the conditions are created for this, and no one bothers. For such people, finishing the cabinet is of utmost importance.
In this article we will consider several design options for this room.

Wood in cabinet design
In former times, the cabinet was traditionally trimmed with valuable wood. The cabinet, as such, was only in aristocratic houses, the owners of which were not afraid of the high enough price of wood.
These rooms were almost always decorated in a style that today is called classic:
- Of course, there wasn’t such a variety in the Middle Ages finishing materials, as now, but the tree has not lost its popularity even today. This is due to the fact that the energy and aroma of wood create a comfortable atmosphere in the room, stimulate the mental activity of a person.
- And also, new ways have appeared to give the tree a good decorative effect. For example: brushing, waxing wood.
Such methods are used not only to finish the wall material from wood, but also furniture, which may look like antique. - Brushing is the treatment of a wood surface with a hard wire brush in order to break the soft fibers of its upper layer. After such a procedure, a woody pattern appears more clearly, especially after coating with stain or wax.
- Compositions of carnauba and beeswax are used both for processing unpainted wood and varnished surface. Wax for sale wall decoration in the form of a thick paste, in tubes or cans.
It is not at all difficult to make such a coating with your own hands, because the packaging always has the manufacturer's instructions. - Wax is processed not only on the board, which, for example, they want to sheathe the walls. Such a coating will give a solid look to wooden wall panels, as well as create a protective film on their surface, which will protect from moisture and drying out, increase the service life of the material.
- There is also a parquet board processed in this way. In this case, the wood is waxed in the factory.
A brushed parquet board can be considered an elite material, and its price is appropriate. The interior design of the office often includes the installation of a beautiful parquet flooring.
- Most often, wood cabinets are decorated with classic wall panels square or rectangular shape, with a geometric relief. Wall cladding can be done over the entire height of the room, as in the photo at the beginning of the article.
- As a design option, wood trim cabinets can be combined with wallpaper. In this case, the panels are mounted only on the lower perimeter of the walls.
Wallpaper is glued in their upper part or plywood fitted with fabric is mounted. This wall cladding is perfectly combined with a coffered or stained-glass false ceiling.
You can see an example of such a cabinet design in the picture above. - The tree can participate in the design of the cabinet and in a smaller volume than is accepted in the classical style. And the style itself may be different.
In our next example, the wonderful interior of a home office decorated in the architectural style of Provence is presented.
- Wooden panels, in this case, are not used in wall decoration: they are simply plastered and painted in the color of sea wave in the same color. But the beautiful ceiling structure made of wood, typical of the Provence style interiors, was made.
- Wooden beams are mounted on the ceiling, the space between which is hemmed with a board, and the strip is embroidered along the upper perimeter of the walls.
Moreover, a wooden baguette does not close the junction of the wall and ceiling, but is mounted at a certain distance from it. This technique visually increases the height of the room. - Belonging to the Provence style is given by narrow high windows, lockers with a cross-shaped layout on the doors, a color scheme of the interior and elegant lamps that are not at all like office options.
- Not every occupant is ready to pay a round sum for its decoration with natural wood.
In the budget version, the cabinet is finished with wood using laminated chipboard or MDF panels with the corresponding texture. Such a design may also be interesting.
Take a look at the photo above: office panels with a smooth surface are not mounted from the floor, but are suspended from the wall. The lower and upper borders of the panels are highlighted with a neon cord and unpretentious, in general, the interior is simply transformed.
The color of the panels is in harmony with the parquet floor, and the gap between them, coupled with the backlight, visually increases the height of the room.
Modern cabinet interior
Of course, wood is not the only material that can be used to design an office. Cabinets often use a large number of cabinet furniture.
If the room is small, the walls due to furniture are almost invisible. Therefore, there is no sense in paneling, you can completely do with their painting.
- The cabinet can be furnished not only with valuable wood furniture, giving the room a pomp. In a more affordable option - these are tables and cabinets made of inexpensive veneered wood, or laminated MDF.
Such furniture is usually sold as a set, and may look something like the usual “wall” in the living room. - That is, all objects are mounted along one wall. You will understand this by looking at the image above: here the furniture is in harmony only with the parquet.
The walls and ceiling are trimmed with neutral paint pale green. The main decoration of this office is a panoramic image on the wall in front of the table, made using photo wallpaper.
- In the decoration of premises for various purposes, today they often use drywall. The cabinet is no exception.
In the following example, we see a beautiful modern interior, in the design of which the tree was not used at all. Even the furniture in this office is not made of wood. - Nevertheless, the situation is very harmonious, and quite working. The walls of this room are sheathed with drywall, a niche is made with backlight.
Stunning color scheme of the interior: the walls are not quite painted normally, with light gray paint (seePaint for interior wall decoration: how to choose) But in combination with a contrasting dark floor, and purple furniture it turned out very impressive and comfortable.
- And here is another application of drywall in the design of the cabinet - a multi-level ceiling design. The walls of this room are covered with wallpaper in parquet color, with a picture imitating an ancient papyrus with inscriptions.
For the office - this is the best choice of wallpaper. The stand for hanging photographs within the framework also fits perfectly into the interior, combining in color with the decoration of the suspended ceiling. - Those days when there were a lot of books in any office have passed. Now everything is in computers, so most cabinet owners do not need a large number of bookcases, which in classic versions often occupied a whole wall: from floor to ceiling.
Enough graceful shelves and cupboards for papers.
- Designers offer their design options for cabinets, sometimes very unusual. Often in the style of minimalism, when the interior is neither cumbersome cabinet furniture, nor soft voluminous armchairs, nor complex ceiling structures: everything is simple, inexpensive, and tasteful.
Perhaps the modern generation of scholars and writers will like a design like the one in the last example much more. An office with this design can be considered not only as a home, but also as an office option.
If the office is designed to work, then it is necessary to draw up it, as it seems to me, in a purely working, minimalist style. Light wood, in no case polished, high-quality plastic, glass, metal.
