The loggia, balcony or terrace, like any other room, needs good decoration. After all, these premises can be used not only for storage of skis and winter tires.
On the loggia you can arrange a relaxation area, and a room for sports, an office, or even a bedroom. In our article we will tell you what materials for wall decoration on the loggia can be used, how to combine them, and what new construction markets are offering us today.

Make a choice

There are many materials to do this work, let's do a product review and make the right choice.

Preparing walls for decoration

In order for the loggia to turn into a room that can be used all year round, before the start of decorative decoration, its side walls and parapet must be thoroughly insulated. There is a huge selection of roll and plate heaters, and the technology of preparatory work will depend on which one you choose.
So:

  • Probably everyone knows what mineral wool is - a heater, the basis of which is organic raw materials. Minvata has remarkable thermal insulation properties, and its price is low, but there is one drawback.
It is afraid of moisture, which means it is subject to rot. More resistant to high humidity is another type of insulation - fiberglass wool.

  • If you chose mineral wool as a heater, then you first need to make waterproofing. The easiest way to isolate exterior walls from moisture is the so-called coating waterproofing.

  • It can be liquid glass, or any composition of deep penetration, of which there are a great many on sale. The instructions on the packaging will explain how to properly apply this material.
  • Some types of insulation can do without a waterproofing layer. For example: polystyrene, isolon, penofol plates and many others.
They are not afraid of moisture, are not blown by the wind, so if your loggia is on the leeward side, one of these heaters will be the best option.

  • The insulation must be closed on top with a vapor barrier film - it simply sticks to it. Almost all modern heaters are also sold in foil version.
  • This is very convenient, especially if the work is done by yourself. Thermal insulation boards are mounted with foil inside the room and do not require an additional vapor barrier.

  • To lay the insulation, a wooden crate is mounted, which means you will need bars with a small section of 30 * 30 or 40 * 40. The bars are nailed in increments corresponding to the width of the heat-insulating board.
If you first decided to do wall insulation, watch the video for a better perception of information.
  • When the insulation work is completed, you can proceed to the finish. Your further actions will depend on what type of finish you have chosen.
If it will be sheathing with plastic, lining, MDF panels, then the frame constructed by you will serve as the basis for the installation of the cladding.

  • In the event that plastering, or other types of finishes that require a perfectly flat surface, will be made, the reinforcing fiberglass mesh should also be glued to the insulation. It is she who will hold the layer of plaster or tile glue.

The diagram clearly shows in what order the materials are mounted for the exterior decoration of the balcony, and its insulation.
If the facade of your house is completely insulated, or you previously finished and insulated the loggia from the outside, then there is no need to do all this work indoors. Then you can immediately proceed to the finish.

Loggia decoration

You can approach the decoration of the loggia with great imagination, and using the most ordinary materials for decorating the walls of the loggia, create a beautiful interior. And you can use not quite ordinary, more modern finishing methods, which we will also try to tell you about.

Stucco and wallpaper

If your loggia has such glazing as in the photo below, then it does not need additional wall insulation, but only in a good design. In this case, bamboo wallpapers were used to decorate the walls, and the window opening is decorated with color stained glass - nothing complicated, but very beautiful.

  • If we are talking about wallpaper, we will talk about them. If you do not need to insulate the walls, a reinforcing mesh is glued to them and plastering is performed.
We will not dwell on this process in detail; we will only talk about what materials will be required to carry it out.
  • The first is a gypsum dry mix, better versatile, which does not require a top coat. The second is a primer, or as it is also called “concrete contact”.
With this composition, each layer of plaster and the finished screed are processed before wallpapering.

  • If you did everything right, you get a guaranteed high-quality surface that you can: at least paint, at least glue with tiles, or decorate with wallpaper. By the way, about the wallpaper: this material for wall decoration on the loggia is perfect.
It is only important not to use cheap paper options that quickly burn out in the sun, but to glue, for example, non-woven or vinyl wallpaper.

  • Loggias always have good natural light, so you can choose any bright colors of the wallpaper. Due to the huge assortment, you can always choose the right option for combining with other types of decor.
It is such combinations that designers often use in their projects.
  • In the picture above, the parapet and the lower part of the walls are lined with wooden panels. The upper part of the wall, and even the window slopes are covered with wallpaper with a bright floral pattern - it turned out to be a very cozy and cheerful interior.
  • Such combinations can vary indefinitely. Instead of wood panels, there may be voluminous eco panels on the parapet, and wallpaper with photo printing on the wall.
To finish the loggia stylish and original, do not forget about accessories: shelves, blinds, lamps. In our next example, it is they who give the interior a complete look, and are its main decoration.

  • Fiberglass Wallpaper. Fiberglass wallpapers are a great option for decorating the loggia. They are incredibly durable, they are not afraid of either moisture or elevated temperatures. This type of wallpaper has the longest life.

Given that fiberglass wallpaper can be painted up to a dozen times, a boring color can simply be repainted. And on the surface of such a wall, you can make a contrasting pattern, which will be in harmony with the color of the furniture, suspended ceiling, floor or ceiling skirting, as in this case.

  • It is impossible not to say about various decorative plasters. These are ideal materials for finishing the balcony from the inside, and there are many varieties of them.
In addition to textured mixtures, in which grains of marble, granite or mica are used as filler, there are more valuable types of plasters that allow you to get an exclusive pattern.
  • Venetian plaster (microcement). This may include microcement plaster, in which, in addition to a cementitious cement base, polymers are added. A more expensive option is the Venetian plaster, consisting of gypsum and finely ground marble flour.
Soft decorative plaster

  • If you want to create a unique interior on your loggia, and are not constrained in the means, you will have to turn to specialists to apply microcement or Venetian plaster.
  • Decorative plaster. For self-finishing, you can use soft decorative plaster, otherwise called liquid wallpaper. They have a beautiful silk structure and are flexible enough not to crack when the building shrinks.
To use liquid wallpaper does not require expensive tools and workshops on the technology of work.

Such wallpaper is applied to the wall in the same way as ordinary plaster, using the cap method. Each applied layer is leveled with a flat iron.
Once again we recall: the main thing is not to forget to finish the surface with a primer, otherwise all the work will go down the drain and the wallpaper will fall off.

Types of materials for decorating the walls of the balcony

Many materials for decorating the walls of the loggia (balcony) are also used for exterior cladding of facades. This is due not only to their decorative value, but also to many other qualities: heat resistance, moisture resistance, strength.
So:

  • Decorative rock. One of such materials is a decorative stone, which can be both natural and artificial. In the image below, a continuous wall cladding with stone is made.
It is quite expensive, so most often only one wall is finished with stone, decorative panels are made, or door and window openings are decorated.

  • Brick. To stylize the walls with brickwork, you can use facing brick or clinker tiles. This finish looks great in combination with wood.
If these are plastic windows, then it is better that they are made of laminated plastic with a wood texture. An original cabinet with a carved door will decorate such an interior.

  • Flexible acrylic tile. Fans of a design stylized as brick or masonry can use materials such as flexible acrylic tiles. This is a relatively new material that is made from acrylic resin and pressed marble chips.
The film glued to the front side gives the tile the desired texture.

  • Lining. Another great option for wall decoration on the balcony is natural wood, which has a lot of fans. Someone has enough imitation, but someone wants to feel the unique woody aroma, and completely sheathes the balcony with a clapboard.
In order to diversify its surface, you can use several different types of boards, as in our example.

  • MDF panels. A wonderful material for decorating the loggia can be laminated fiberboard or chipboard, MDF panels. They can sheathe walls, make furniture on the loggia, and these are excellent materials for finishing slopes of plastic windows and doors.

  • Vinyl siding. Finally, I want to say about such a finish option as vinyl siding. Initially, it was used as a material for the exterior decoration of a balcony or facade of a house.

But its excellent decorative properties and ease of installation have long contributed to the decoration of some rooms, in particular: attics, summer kitchens, verandas, as well as balconies and loggias.
