Decorative cladding for interior walls in the room helps to create a unique cozy atmosphere. At the moment there is a large assortment of finishing material, which is widely used both in interior and exterior decoration.

Materials used for interior cladding

Decorative wall cladding can be performed:

  • Plastic, both in separate strips, and in sheets (panels).
  • Decorative wall panels from different types of material.
  • Siding panels.

Note. You can also use natural and artificial stone, decorative plaster, wallpaper and other materials.

Plastic, its types in decorative wall decoration

Decorative wall cladding with plastic can be using different types of this material.
There is:

  • Vinyl plastic.
  • Laminated paper.

These two species have significant differences with their properties and characteristics.

Vinyl plastic and its properties

Most often, the decorative cladding of internal walls is performed with this material. It has excellent properties and benefits.
PVC plastic:

  • Moisture-resistant, as it is able to withstand the constant moist environment of any room in the apartment (bathroom, bathroom, kitchen area).
  • Practical, as it is very easy to clean due to the fact that the surface is not able to absorb dust and dirt.
For cleaning it will be enough to use a damp rag. (If this type of plastic is used in outdoor applications, you can wash it with a hose under a fairly strong pressure of water).
  • Long-lasting, since it does not fade under the sun and thereby does not lose its original appearance. This makes it possible to operate the finish for a long time.
  • Frost-resistant - withstands very low temperatures, which cannot adversely affect the structure of plastic.
  • Wear resistant due to the fact that the surface of the material is covered with a protective layer.
  • It tolerates temperature extremes indoors and outdoors.

Other features:

  • In addition to all of the above, plastic is very easy to assemble with your own hands. Only the surface for such work should be adequately prepared.
  • In appearance, the plastic in the strips is very much like a wooden lining. It has a large selection of shades and designs on its surface.
There are different simulations. natural stone, brickwork, just plain shades.
All this allows you to create a unique and original interior. See photos with the design of the apartment with plastic.
  • Plastic in its properties and methods of application is a universal material.
  • It can be mounted on a wall or ceiling surface.
  • Finishing the apartment can be done not only with plastic stripes, but also with panels. They have a larger size. If there are special locks on the ends on the stripes, then in the panels they are not found very often.
  • Decorative panels for wall cladding made of plastic can be of different thicknesses.
It all depends on whether insulation and insulation work will be carried out in the room. Quite often, panels are glued to polystyrene or extruded polystyrene foam.
  • Such actions simultaneously finish and warm the apartment.
  • Plastic in itself is an excellent insulating material. It does not allow steam, moisture and to some extent drowns out the sound. It does not burn and does not deform under the influence of high temperature.

Tip. If condensation is collected on the plastic trim, then you can get rid of it with a dry rag. Most often, this phenomenon occurs in the bathroom or bathroom.

The surface of the plastic can be of two types: glossy and matte. For ceilings very often the first type is used, and for the walls - the second.
This is not to say that plastic is very durable, but with the help of a certain installation technology it can withstand significant loads.

Laminated paper and its properties

Material Features

Lining the walls with decorative paper laminate has become popular relatively recently. Due to the fact that this type of material has a much more attractive appearance, its popularity began to grow every day.
What is paper-decorative plastic:

  • This is plastic that is made using different types of paper.
  • They are pressed under the influence of high temperatures with the addition of resinous substances, which make the material similar in its properties to ordinary plastic.
  • Only its price is slightly higher.

Note. This type of plastic is produced only in strips that have special locks on their ends for fastening the finish.

The surface of the material may be:

  • Metallized - coated with a thin layer of metal alloy.
  • Structural - can be with several types of design (uneven).
  • Glossy that comes with a certain sheen.
  • Matte is the most practical and reliable surface.

Note. The material has a back and front side, in most cases they are decorated the same way. Wall cladding with decorative laminate is universal, as it is used not only on the wall surface, but also on the ceiling.

It has a large selection of colors and imitations.
The most common are imitations of wood, which are found in warm and cold shades:

  • Dark brown.
  • Brown.
  • Light brown.
  • Chocolate.
  • Sand.
  • Brick.

Lining the walls with decorative materials of this type is performed similarly to the installation of ordinary vinyl plastic.
The properties of paper-laminated plastic include:

  • Practicality, since it can be used in almost every room.
  • Durability - with proper use, the finish can last for 10 years.
  • Moisture resistance - refers to not all types of paper-laminated plastic.
  • Reliability and strength, since on the surface after installation it is able to withstand significant mechanical and physical loads.
  • Wear resistance - thanks to its protective layer, it does not lose its appearance for a very long time and its design is not erased.

Features:

  • We can say that paper-laminated plastic is frost-resistant, only it is not able to withstand very low temperatures, as it is more suitable for interior decoration.

Tip. If this type of material is used to decorate a balcony, it is best to opt for plastic, which has a protected surface on both sides.

  • This is due to the fact that there is always high humidity on the balcony, and if the joints of the material are not treated with sealant and do not have bilateral protection, then moisture will constantly get into them, which over time will destroy the structure of the plastic and deform the finish.
  • It is possible that the decorative wall cladding in the apartment should be made of paper-laminated plastic, as there will be no high humidity or very sharp temperature drops inside the room.

Tip.Before buying laminated paper, you need to check with the seller about its properties. Also on the packaging of the material there is a special instruction in which not only the possible methods of application are indicated, but also the advantages of the material.

How to mount plastic

Plastic Installation Instructions
Plastic Installation Instructions

Initially, preparatory work is carried out on the surface, which consists in the manufacture of a frame for mounting plastic.
For this you need:

  • A metal profile of a certain size or wooden planks of the same diameter for an even and high-quality manufacture of a crate.
  • The expansion bolt shield for fixing on a surface of a framework and self-tapping screws for fastening of its elements among themselves.
  • Puncher for screwing dowels and screwdrivers - for wood or metal tapping screws. They can easily be replaced with a conventional drill. Only it will be necessary to choose the right nozzle.
  • Construction level for a flat arrangement of the frame and its elements on the surface.
  • Tape measure and pencil.
  • Saw or jigsaw for cutting wooden planks or a hacksaw for metal, which is interchangeable with scissors for metal.
  • Another improvised tool is a hammer, a screwdriver, nails and so on.

So:

  • Which frame to choose: metal or wooden? Everything is very simple. The choice must be made based on the functionality of the premises.
  • If the plastic will be mounted in the bathroom, bathroom or kitchen area, it is more rational to use a metal profile. If the room is not with high humidity, but with a constant temperature regime, then a wooden crate is used.

Tip. It is worth considering that in order to increase the life of the crate from wooden planks, you can simply cover it with varnish and thereby protect against a variety of fungal diseases.

Decorative wall cladding of the apartment using any type of plastic is performed using:

  • Self-tapping screws and a screwdriver, which can be replaced with a construction stapler with brackets of the desired color.
  • Construction level for an even and high-quality finish.
  • Jigsaw for cutting material.
  • Sealants, which, if necessary, process joints

Instruction:

  • External and internal plastic corners are also used, which are already mounted on the surface of the plastic using liquid nails or construction glue. Quite often, a stapler is also used.
  • The installation of strips or plastic panels should start from the corner that is closest to the doorway. Thus, the joints of the material will not be too noticeable in daylight.
  • The top and bottom of the plastic is finished with decorative skirting boards made of wood, polyurethane foam or other material.

In the video you can see the process of installing plastic on the surface of the crate, followed by finishing work at the top, bottom and in the corners of the room.
