Types and features of applying frescoes
What are wall murals? This is a type of room decoration available to many owners of ordinary apartments who want to add exclusivity to the interior, showing their creative abilities, doing everything with their own hands.
In addition, the manufacture of frescoes on the walls has such positive aspects as:
- Freedom of creativity. At the same time, there is no need to search for shops for a long time, something original, beautiful and at the same time stylish, which would have been not only to your liking, but also affordable. All you need is to decide on your abilities and choose a plot.
- Hand-made any image - already exclusive - no one in such a performance.
- When decorating only one of the wallsleaving the rest as it is, you can independently apply murals, adjusting to the existing interior style, as seen in the photo.
Frescoes in the interior are a fairly affordable pleasure.
Wall painting can be:
- Classical. This is a wall painting of applying a picture to raw plaster. A feature of traditional painting is its laboriousness of execution. All work should be completed a maximum of a day, but there is no opportunity to fix something. The price of such a technology for applying murals is the highest of all available, the most time-consuming, which does not allow any owner of his home to do it on his own.
- On canvas. This image combines natural materials and the craftsmanship of the artist. The drawing is applied to the canvas manually on top of a special composition. Paints are natural pigments. To give the fresco realism, it is artificially aged. After covering the canvas with wax, such a decorative element can last a long time.
- On a self-adhesive basis. They can be compared with photo wallpaper (see. Wall mural murals: how to choose the right one) or textured wallpaper. The basis of this decorative element is a thin layer of plaster, made on the basis of a special paste from river sand, which is superimposed on a self-adhesive base, fixed to the wall without any additional materials or tools. The small thickness of the coating does not mask defects on the wall.
Tip: For self-adhesive application, additional surface preparation should be performed.
Lack of coverage - there is no way to do additional processing, for example, to create an aging effect.
- On the non-woven. Such murals are widely used in the design of large areas. Externally, decorative elements of this type are practically no different from frescoes made on canvas, but modern technologies with complex technical methods are used at the heart of the manufacturing method. The image itself is made on a printer, where the paper is replaced by a base for non-woven wallpaper. A drawing can be from almost any picture or photograph. The effect of a holistic picture is created by several fragments with joints invisible to the armed eye, subject to printing and editing technology.
- On a tight basis. Various coatings and materials can be used for the base of the mural: plastic, wood and even ceramics. With this basis, cracks and chips can be simulated, which will give the product an aging effect. The only drawback of this method is the relatively large mass of elements, which significantly reduces the size of the frescoes of this type.
- The interior of a small bedroom, small-sized kitchen or small hallway, can harmoniously complement the small mural, but it does not look too appropriate surrounded by a large unoccupied space in the room.
- The fresco, made on elastic plaster, looks quite close to the classic one. But unlike it, elastic plaster does not dry out so quickly, which allows the master to do the work more carefully. Due to the application of the image on the wall manually, the price of this method of decorating the room is quite high.
Tip: A large selection of painting options allows you to consider not only the preferences of the owner of the premises, but also its purpose. In the interior of the bedroom, the fresco should contribute to calm, in the kitchen bright and juicy shades that charge a person with positive for the whole day should be used, the fresco on the wall in the bath should contribute to pleasure, soothe before going to bed.

How to prepare a surface for murals
The life-size marking for the mural is applied to the properly prepared wall surface, which will increase the durability of the applied pattern.
Stages of surface preparation:
- The old coating is removed.
- All defects are carefully repaired.
- With a dry cloth or brush, dust is well removed from the wall.
- The surface is primed (see Primer walls and all for that matter), which will improve adhesion to the plaster composition.
- Wall defects are fixed using the usual cement plaster and good putty. In this case, all cracks and potholes are sealed on the surface.
- The plane is lightly sanded with a flat board previously moistened with water.
- After drying, the wall is primed again, after absorbing the solution, the main layer of plaster is applied. It should be of good quality based on cement and sand.
Tip: To improve the properties of the coating, a small amount of a binder should be added to the composition: gypsum or plasticizers.
- Easy again stucco grout.
- The wall is covered with putty.
- After drying, the surface is primed. In this case, the primer composition must be of high quality, to fix the paint and prevent the appearance of dampness or fungus on the wall.
How to apply murals in different ways
Drawing a relief fresco is carried out on all wall, in one color scale.
Whatever method the mural is applied: transferring to the wall with or without a stencil, you will need to purchase:
- Acrylic paints of the necessary colors.
- Two brushes with natural pile.
- Brush with faux pile.
Tip: The thickness of the brushes should be selected immediately depending on the image used.
- Soft clean rag.
- High quality clearcoat.
- Brush for applying varnish.
- Wide stylus.
- A sharp pencil.
- A washcloth.
- To give the image the effect of antiquity, you need a paint based on craquelure, which gives cracking, silver or golden powder.
The fresco drawing is performed on a traditional, modern theme, it can be a mural on the wall in the Art Nouveau style.
Drawing Instruction:
- The pattern is applied on top, gradually moving to the bottom. This is much more convenient and will prevent smearing of the paint in the picture.
- Larger details of the pattern are being worked out, and then smaller ones, which can be designed after the main drawing has dried.
Tip: If necessary, craquelure should be applied to dried paint, and powder to slightly fresh. When the paint dries with a washcloth, you can easily remove all of its excess.
- The surface is covered with a wide brush with a protective transparent varnish, which simultaneously protects the image, and serves as a means of additional decor. Wherein:
- to obtain a glossy pattern, it is covered with two to three layers of varnish;
- for a matte effect - one layer is enough. It is enough to protect the surface.
When applying the image on a slate stencil, you must:
- Make a sketch of the picture.
- The sketch is flipped over and completely painted over with a wide stylus.
- The shaded side of the sketch is firmly applied to the wall.
- On the front side, all lines are drawn with a pencil with force.
- After the translation of the picture, its decoration is performed by the method described above.
There are other simpler methods for applying frescoes. It is possible to make a stencil from very thin paper, by which a fresco is applied on a round wall.
In this case:
- The paper is coated with special stencil adhesive on the back.
- This side is applied to the surface and neatly pressed well over the entire plane.
- After fully setting, it paints.
The easiest way is to stick a regular picture on the canvas, like wallpaper:
- The surface is drawn.
- Glue for non-woven wallpaper is applied to it.
- The mural cut out of paper is immediately glued.
- After drying, the picture is leveled.
- It is varnished.
Whatever method of manufacturing the mural was chosen, the wall after its application will look original and unique.
