Rules for choosing material for plaster
Plaster in the bathroom under the tile is applied in the same way as regular paint. The plane should eventually have a flat surface.
To do this, mainly cement-based plaster. After all, this material perfectly tolerates high humidity. But there are other compounds that can also be used. Let's now consider which stucco is best for the bathroom.
Sanitary plaster
When plastering the walls in the bathroom, do not forget about sanitizing properties. In the current construction market there is a wide selection of such mixtures, which are added with a variety of additives or plasticizers. Plastering the bathroom under the tile can be done with this composition.
Attention: Dry plasters for bathrooms have a sufficiently high strength than a simple cement-sand, they are easy to apply, harden faster and do not undergo cracking.
After the wall is completely dry, it can be puttied or tiled (this will take about a week).
Among other things, such mixtures have undeniable advantages:
- Excellent protection against moisture or salts penetrating from the foundation and the load-bearing wall for layers for which gypsum or cement plasters were used (see Cement or gypsum plaster: which is better to choose);
- No efflorescence will appear on the walls;
- Moisture accumulating inside is removed from the structural elements;
- Good waterproofing that will protect the walls of the bathroom;
- High vapor permeability;
- The absence of cracking during operation or hardening, even if the Venetian plaster was applied in a thick layer;
- The material is completely environmentally friendly;
- High sulfate resistance.
Attention: Such mixtures can not be used for application on a gypsum base, as well as waterproofing protection of foundations, walls and socles from groundwater.
How to apply gypsum plaster
So, when deciding what exactly to plaster the bathroom with, it is necessary to opt for mixtures made on the basis of cement and having antibacterial additives. But whether gypsum compositions can be used in a bathroom is an interesting question.
It turns out that if you follow some rules, this is a very feasible task. Though gypsum plaster the bathroom is not used often. After all, gypsum absorbs moisture. But following some rules is quite possible.
Here is a list of them:
- The plastered walls must be completely covered with ceramic tiles, and the joints on the wall are rubbed using a moisture-resistant grout;
- The thickness of the layer of plaster should not be more than two centimeters;
- As a consequence, the plastered surface will not be smoothed out, I leave it a little rough before finishing it (when laying tiles, this is an allowable moment);
- Before laying tiles, the surface of the wall must be treated with soil. In the bathroom, gypsum plaster is placed only on it. Then the adhesion of the surfaces will be much higher.
Attention: It is worth noting that the gypsum plaster used for walls in the bathroom is not the most suitable option, if possible, then it is certainly better to purchase compositions based on cement. But if the above conditions are met, such formulations may well apply.
Is it possible to use gypsum plaster in the bathroom? Now you know what you can, but carefully.
Rules for applying plaster
Plastering the bathroom is done in a specific order. The scheme has long been worked out, you just need to follow the advice of professionals.
Attention: When buying material, look, because there must be waterproof plaster for the bathroom, the other will not hold.
We prepare the base
At the very beginning, you need to prepare the surface. To do this, it is cleaned of plaster and old paint, if it is a new building - from dirt, dust and so on.
So:
- To remove paint stains, use the blowtorch method or a solution that is prepared from a lime mixture (eight parts) and soda (two parts);
- If the roughness of the walls is insufficient, they are processed by cutting or notching, which ultimately improves adhesion, that is, the adhesion of the wall and plaster.
Attention: For processing, you can completely use a sandblasting machine. This will help to do the job quickly and efficiently.
- If the walls are made of brick in the bathroom, you need to pre-scratch or notch the seams to a depth of one and a half centimeters, while not forgetting to remove the emerging dust. If the seams are not filled, then a notch is not performed, because the walls already have roughness.
Spray
Plaster for tiles in the bathroom is often applied precisely by the spray method, which provides strong adhesion of the surface and mortar by filling in various irregularities.
Spray is the starting layer of finishing with plaster, for which a liquid composition is used, whose consistency will look like sour cream:
- To begin with, the base is wetted with water;
- The solution is applied by spraying in such a way that ultimately a layer of at least five millimeters is obtained.
Important: If the base is made of wood, then the thickness can increase to nine.
- The spray layer applied is most often not smoothed and not evened out.
Draft layer
Roughing is the alignment of the plane. There is no need to make the surface perfectly flat. It is important to make the basis for applying the finish.
- It is applied to the spray in a continuous layer. If the solution is made of gypsum and lime, then the thickness is about seven millimeters, but if it contains cement, then this figure drops to five;
- If as a result the layer is not enough, after it dries, the next one is applied, which should be thicker;
- The rough layer is leveled, smeared with a trowel, whose length is from seventy to one hundred centimeters. One and a half leaps can move absolutely on any trajectory.
Final layer
These works can be conditionally divided into two subspecies: plastering the walls in the bathroom for further decoration, for example - applying tiles, or applying a decorative layer.
The main difference between these types is the correct choice of thickness (for decorative plaster it will be approximately four to seven mm, for the usual - no more than two) and materials:
- At the very beginning, you need to moisten the draft layer;
- Then they take a wide spatula, on the edge of which the composition of the mixture is applied and spreads evenly on the wall. In this case, it is necessary that the spatula be at an angle of fifteen to twenty degrees;
- Not completely frozen layer is rubbed with a special grater in a circular motion, which are directed clockwise.
Attention: When processing the protrusions, grater must be pressed, and when grouting the recesses, vice versa.
- If you plan to continue to apply textured plasterthen a decorative layer is applied to the laid layer. For this, a narrow spatula is taken, whose width is approximately eight to twelve centimeters. In this case, you will be able to create a wide variety of patterns and drawings;
- Also, you can make various movements with the tool: down-up, circular or otherwise.
Attention: When plastering the ceiling and walls, carefully observe safety measures - wear a gauze bandage, glasses and gloves for protection.
Among other things, you need to control the air temperature and humidity level, as high temperatures will lead to faster drying. As soon as all work is completed, the tool is washed, and the remaining material is stored closed.
The main points when applying plaster
Before starting such work, you need to prepare a non-crumbling, durable base and clean from the remaining paint, oil and grease.
So:
- Weak zones are removed and coated with a solution;
- If there are seams on the brickwork, they are embroidered, that is, deepened;
- The efflorescence is protected by a steel brush. If the area is too large, then use a grinder equipped with a special nozzle;
- The day before the plastering of the surface will be carried out, the walls are covered with a spray, which will improve adhesion;
- If you use gypsum plaster on the walls, you will need to mount a plastic reinforcing mesh.
Caution: For mixing dry mixes, only clean water should be used, whose temperature is from fifteen to twenty degrees. The composition is poured in small portions from the bag into a container of water and constantly kneaded. The density of the solution is selected in accordance with the required thickness, liquid is poured to regulate.
- Starting to prepare the solution, you need to keep in mind that the mixture needs to be spent for twenty minutes, otherwise its porosity and characteristics will drop;
- If the brickwork is plastered, the seams are first clogged and the main plaster layer is cast;
- Depending on the required thickness, the solution can be applied mechanically or manually in one or even several passes;
- If you decide to process the walls at a time, then you can throw a 1/3 layer, which is then leveled and rubbed after a while;
- Do not allow the base to dry too quickly for twenty-four hours or longer.
We use decorative plaster in the bathroom
Currently, surface coating is not becoming more popular not with tiles, but with decorative plaster, for example, Venetian. During decoration, any type of such material can be used, the main condition is to ensure their moisture resistance.
Textured plaster can make the surface completely individual. After all, here it will be possible to place various forms.
- Before starting work related to plastering, it is necessary to additionally waterproof and carry out their impregnation with a primer.
- The water-repellent properties of the coating can be improved using special solutions based on natural wax. Quite often, a facade structural mixture is taken to design a bathroom, since it withstands higher humidity in the room better than other similar compounds.
Before you start surface finishing with a decorative composition, you need to prepare it:
- Do not forget that it is necessary to remove the old coating (tiles, wallpapers, paint and varnish mixtures, etc.). After that, the walls are washed and dried;
- Then they and the ceilings are primed with several layers of mortar.which improves adhesion of the surface to the coating. At the same time, the walls do not have to be one hundred percent even, because decorative plaster well hides various minor defects;
- Once the soil is completely dry, you can proceed to the processing of the bathroom;
- Is the decorative coating dry? You can cover it with mastic, which has a natural base, which increases the waterproofness of the walls and gives them a beautiful gloss.
Attention: You can select almost any texture and pattern of decorative plaster, only your own imagination can be considered a limitation. A correctly and correctly applied mixture can last more than one year and will delight the eye no worse than tiles.

- To make a solution based on a dry mixture, you need to use only pure water (at the same time it should be at room temperature). Plus, the mixture needs to be poured into water and do not forget to constantly stir;
- The density of the solution is determined based on the desired layer thickness. The thicker the solution, the thicker the layer can be applied per call;
- They begin to prepare the solution, do not forget that at a time such a portion can be mixed that will be applied to the surface almost immediately;
- If it is necessary to process a brick wall, then the joints are first filled, and then the composition is distributed over the entire surface.
