Types and properties of the material
Materials for applying Venetian plaster are in retail chains. But for a person who does not have special skills in applying Venetian plaster, a synthetic mixture is suitable.
So:
- It is easy to apply and the desired texture is achieved after 2 layers of application.. For those who decide to apply the Venetian on their own, but do not have the skills of a builder, a mixture based on chemical fillers is the most ideal option.
- There are several varieties of Venetian plasterwhich differ in composition, uniformity and particle size. High-quality plaster should be ductile, have strength and adhesiveness.
- Depending on the application methods and the final result, the Venetian is divided into relief, smooth, and artistic.
- In smooth plaster, consisting of the finest marble dust, lime is a bonding element. To apply such a composition is very difficult. There is a risk of very strong lightening, which is why it is difficult to choose a color, and dark spots may appear in some areas.
- The main difference between relief and smooth plaster is the presence of a granular mixture consisting of a binder mixture based on quartz, marble, sand, mica or granite. This gives the surface of the wall a roughness and the appearance of the plaster is similar to aged marble.
Necessary tools
Applying ‘Venetian’ plaster is done with the right tool.
Moreover, the entire tool should have an ideal working edge, otherwise you risk spoiling the plane:
- A pair of steel graters with a width of 20 and 25 centimeters for applying and leveling the mixture;
- Two spatulas with sizes of 6 and 20 centimeters, with rounded and polished edges (small we put the mixture on a grater, and large smooth the material);
- Two brushes - the flute (flat brush) and the crown (the paint brush is oval, round or rectangular), the latter should have a thick bristle;
- Construction tape;
- Level;
- Long metal ruler;
- Grinding grater;
- Skin with a fine fraction;
- Masking tape.
Doing the preparation of the walls
The method of applying the Venetian plaster video tells about the proper preparation of the walls. Before applying the Venetian, it is necessary to very carefully process the base plane.
Perfectly smooth walls are the main condition of the application technology. This will allow in the future to obtain high-quality and durable plaster, striking in its similarity to natural marble.
So:
- Applying various types of decorative plaster, you can not really find fault with the quality of the prepared surface. Small cracks, bumps, potholes easily hide under the applied layer. But the Venetian plaster is very demanding on the quality of the preparatory work.
- Walls free from dust should have a perfectly flat surface. Remove old putty, whitewash or paint.With particular care, angles must be prepared.
- All recesses need to be sealed with a leveling mixture and wiped with sandpaper. If you are applying a Venetian to a drywall, carefully process and align the joints. It is necessary to eliminate all defects, otherwise the coating will turn out uneven and this will ruin the whole effect.
- Applying a Venetian requires maximum integrity in execution and patience. After removing contaminants from the walls, the first starting layer is applied.
- After complete drying for several hours, we proceed to sanding the wall, remove all bumps and bumps.
- Then carefully remove the dust with a dry cloth or compressed air and primer. Let the primer dry and proceed to the second putty.
- Again, let it dry well and again carefully grind the surface. This is a very long time and a lot of effort is expended, but it is necessary to achieve the final result. High quality finishing putty we eliminate absolutely all flaws, make final grinding and remove all dust.
Caution: Preparatory work is time consuming. It is necessary for thorough drying of each layer. The time for drying the layer depends on the temperature and humidity of the room in which the work is carried out. Low temperature and high humidity increase drying time. The time required for the layer to dry is 24 hours, and under adverse conditions it may increase.
Video lessons on applying Venetian plaster say that when you reach a perfectly even wall surface, we cover it twice with a deep penetration primer that matches the type of putty you worked with. After the plaster is completely dry, you can proceed to the most important stage of work.
Color selection
Video lessons on applying Venetian plaster will tell you the right choice of colors, which should complement the entire structure as a whole.
Attention: Do not forget that you need to glue the top of the prepared wall with masking tape before starting work.
Attention: It is required to remove the adhesive tape after the work done. Do not wait for the plaster to dry completely, otherwise cracks may appear on it.
- In construction stores, a wide selection of both ready-made mixtures and non-tinted ones is presented. When choosing the color of your coating, take into account the fact that the finished mixture, applied in the room, will slightly differ in color and brightness from the one you selected from the catalog or sample in the store.
- When choosing a color scheme for a living room, give preference to soft pastel colors. They will make the general atmosphere of the room more comfortable and cozy. And the choice of furniture for them is much easier to do.
- Avoid bright and screaming tones, they will visually reduce the room, can lead to fatigue.
Attention: If you decide to tint the plaster yourself, then remember that when adding color, you need to thoroughly mix the mass with a construction mixer, achieving a uniform consistency and color.
Venetian Plaster Technology
Venetian plastering technology consider in more detail. Before starting work, make sure that the wall is dry and perfectly even. How to apply Venetian plaster: the video will tell you about the details of this work.
Attention: It is advisable to divide the work surface into squares from 0.5 to 1 square meter. This will greatly simplify the work.
- We start work from the top corner. The first base layer is applied to the entire surface in a continuous layer. It will level the surface and set the tone. The mass is laid on a steel grater with a small spatula.
- Apply a thin layer, uniform arcuate movements from left to right over the entire surface of the wall.
Attention: It is important to immediately distribute the material on the surface, not allowing it to solidify.
- We press the working tool against the wall tightly, at an angle of 20 degrees. Avoid spaces and exclude joints.
- When moving to the bottom of the wall, we work from the bottom up. Thanks to these movements, Venetian plaster subsequently becomes similar to natural marble.
- The first layer is left to dry for 5 to 8 hours, the time depends on the mass that we use. Of course, ideally, it is better to continue work the next day.
- The second and subsequent layers during application create future patterns and effects. The color of the second layer is different from the first. It may be darker or lighter. The choice of tones depends on your preference.
- To apply the second layer we use a steel spatula. The movements become short. Smears are performed in pairs, one stroke as if overlapping another. These cross-shaped movements help to remove excess mass from the wall and, thus rubbing the base layer, you draw a variety of streaks. All veins of the previous layer should not coincide with the subsequent ones.
- After applying the second layer, it is necessary to seal or press-fit. To do this, take a clean grater and, pressing with effort to the wall, draw along the applied layer. This will allow the future picture and gloss to appear. The main thing is to have time to do this procedure before the mass dries.
- Experienced plasterers achieve incredibly spectacular textures. Giving the plaster depth and transparency, they apply a lot of intermediate layers. The highest achievement of craftsmanship is the indistinguishability of the applied material from real marble.
- When the decorative layer is completely dry, proceed to glaze. To do this, the entire surface is carefully cleaned with the smallest emery paper.
Brilliance
After finishing sanding, we fix the work with special wax. It can be both natural and synthetic.
So:
- Natural gives the surface shine, and synthetic increases moisture resistance and dullness.. Optionally, before applying wax, you can emphasize the pattern with gilding, silver or pearl glaze.
- It is better not to use the varnish, from it the surface may become cloudy over time. Wax is applied and polished with a special glove. Coating can be applied a week after all work.
Attention: If you decide to do everything with your own hands, then before starting work, you need to practice on a small section of the wall.
You watch the video how to apply the Venetian plaster and get acquainted with everything in more detail. In this matter, never rush, at the beginning, think over everything, starting from the material and ending with the pattern and the choice of the tool. After all, this will help the formation of the desired relief of the plane. Video application of the Venetian plaster will help you not to miss anything.
