Despite the prevalence of gas and electric heating, some owners of private housing leave furnaces and even order their construction. Such popularity is explained by the fact that the design creates an atmosphere of comfort in the house. In order for the stove to last for a long period, and the appearance meets the aesthetic needs of users, it is recommended to plaster the surface. This will require special material and compliance with the application technique.

Plastering the furnace

Why plaster the stove?

Plastering of furnaces is carried out in order to increase the operational period of the structure. The material is also used to improve the appearance of this device. Plaster for stoves is used in the following cases:

  • wear of the old coating, as a result of which the furnace has lost its visual appeal;
  • the appearance of cracks in the brickwork - such defects can not be ignored, because of them carbon monoxide penetrates into the room, which leads to sad consequences;
  • the appearance of insects in the materials of the furnace.

Plastering do-it-yourself stoves, as video tutorials show, is possible in both new and old designs. The main thing is to choose the right materials for decoration.

Advantages and disadvantages of plastering

Advantages of using plaster for stoves:

  • reasonable price in comparison with other finishing materials;
  • ease of use, surface plastering can be done even by amateurs with their own hands;
  • the product is suitable for all types of stoves and fireplaces;
  • increased heat transfer, due to which there is a fuel economy;
  • improvement in appearance.

Stucco also helps create a furnace finish that harmoniously fits into the interior of the room.

The use of material has only one drawback - after solidification of the solution on the base, defects can occur. To avoid this, you need to know how to plaster the stove so that the surface does not crack. To do this, it is recommended to adhere to the following decoration rules:

  • use only high-quality solutions;
  • observe the technique of plastering;
  • Before applying the solution, the surface should be thoroughly prepared and primed.

Types of materials

Not every plaster is suitable for furnishing a stove. This is due to the fact that the structure is regularly heated to high temperatures. For this reason, only refractory stove plasters are used for decoration. The material creates a durable coating on the surface, protects the base from defects and deformation due to elevated temperatures.

Heat-resistant plaster for the furnace contains special substances. Most often, manufacturers add glass, clay and sand to the material. These components increase the fire resistance of the product.

Rules for choosing plaster

Plaster for the furnace should have the following characteristics:

  • fire resistance, so that the product withstands high temperatures without the formation of defects;
  • thermal insulation properties;
  • environmental friendliness.

Self-preparation of the solution

Plasters for the oven can be prepared independently.There are two types of mixtures:

  1. Simple. Such material is made of only three elements.
  2. Complicated. The composition of such mixtures is enhanced by additional substances.

Simple material recipe

This will require:

  • clay of medium fat content - 1 part;
  • sifted sand - 2 parts;
  • shredded fiberglass - 1/10 part.

All components are combined and stirred (as in the photo below). Then water is added and the solution is kneaded with a construction mixer or a drill with a mixer nozzle. The finished product is used for its intended purpose.

The recipe for complex material

To prepare a complex composition you will need:

  • slaked lime - 1 part;
  • gypsum - 2 parts;
  • sifted sand - 1 part;
  • fiberglass - 2 parts.

All products are combined, poured with water and kneaded with a construction mixer or drill with a mixer nozzle. The product should be used within half an hour after preparation, as the material quickly hardens.

Finish conditions

DIY plastering of the furnace is carried out taking into account the following finishing conditions:

  • dry and clean surface;
  • applying material to an old finish;
  • the use of water-based paints and varnishes as a decorative coating, since such products do not emit unpleasant odors when heated;
  • environmental friendliness of all finishing materials, since the presence in the composition of chemicals leads to intoxication of the body.

Surface plastering

If you need to finish the furnace, how to plaster the surface - the first question that arises for amateurs. To properly perform the work, you need to familiarize yourself with the algorithm for applying the material.

Necessary materials and tools

To plaster the oven you will need:

  • plaster;
  • a primer;
  • a bucket for mixing the solution;
  • primer dispensing container;
  • brush or roller for applying a primer;
  • a mortar mixing tool is a drill with a mixer nozzle or a construction mixer;
  • trowel;
  • industrial grater for surface grout;
  • level;
  • nails 4-5 cm long.

Building foundation preparation

Before plastering the stove, as the video demonstrates, the building foundation needs to be prepared. The algorithm of work:

  • the old cover is mounted;
  • dust removal surface;
  • deepen the masonry joint seams - for this 10 mm of material is removed and the recesses are cleaned of dust;
  • the base and slots are coated with a primer;
  • if the surface has large differences, then the reinforcing mesh is fixed on the furnace with nails;
  • so that the corners are even after finishing, it is recommended to fix the corners on them.

Solution preparation

To prepare the plaster mortar, the dry mixture is placed in a bucket and water is added. Proportions manufacturers indicate on the packaging. After that, the mixture is kneaded with an industrial mixer or a drill with a mixer nozzle. The product is left for 10 minutes, stirred again and immediately applied to a building base.

Material application

Masters know how to plaster a stove. Professionals advise to adhere to the following decoration algorithm:

  • melt the stove and wait until the fuel burns out completely;
  • moisten the surface with water;
  • Spread a solution, 5 mm thick, on the base with a spatula or trowel and level the product on the surface;
  • take a break so that the composition freezes;
  • apply 10 mm thick material using a spatula;
  • interrupt to freeze, but do not wait until it dries completely;
  • moisten the surface with water and grate.

Rules for checking the quality of plaster

To assess the quality of plastering, a level is required. Using the tool, the following indicators are evaluated:

  • surface differences - permissible deviation of 1 mm;
  • surface differences at different points of the finish - tolerance of 2 mm.

How to increase the service life of the finish?

To increase the operational period of finishing and increase the visual appeal of the structure, it is recommended to use the following decorating materials:

  • chalk diluted with milk of lime;
  • milk of lime and salt. The proportion of the product is 100 grams of salt per bucket of material.

The video in this article demonstrates how to properly apply plaster on a stove.
