The sticker on the drywall of the wallpaper is not a complicated process, but painstaking. After all, it is necessary to qualitatively prepare the plane, otherwise all the flaws will be visible. How to paste wallpaper on drywall today and we will consider in detail. Also, a video will be presented to your attention, where you can familiarize yourself with the nuances of performing this work.

Rules for gluing wallpaper on drywall

Wallpapering on drywall is done in several stages. It is not difficult to do the work and the price of decoration is not large. How to glue the wallpaper on drywall, let's analyze in detail.

The process of gluing wallpaper on drywall can be divided into several stages:

Drywall Primer

The very first step is the priming of the surface (see Drywall primer for wallpaper - why is it needed) intended for puttying before wallpapering.

Attention: Primer treatment is an obligatory step in the preparation of walls before puttying. This will greatly enhance the coating and make it durable.

  • Priming allows you to get rid of fine dust and strengthen the surface, as well as improve the adhesion of materials to each other. In addition, the primer will help protect the walls from possible damage by fungus or mold. The primer can be used both for wall treatment and for ceiling treatment.
  • The primer can be applied to the surface with a roller, spray or a wide brush. It is important to monitor the uniformity of the applied layer. Primer consumption is usually indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging.
  • The primer is sold ready-made. But before buying, the instructions should be studied. After all, some types must be diluted before use.

Strengthening joints between drywall sheets

The next step is to strengthen the seams between the drywall boards. Everything is done with your own hands, for this you need to stick a special construction tape - a sickle.

  • Serpyanka is a strip of fiberglass with a cellular structure. Such stripes come in various widths. Serpyanka is designed for leveling surfaces, sealing small defects and cracks, as well as for reinforcing the joints of drywall sheets.
  • Serpyanka should be glued to the seam between the sheets, and then puttyed (see Putty of drywall joints - how to do it) Putty can be used special for sealing joints between drywall sheets.
  • After drying, the putty should be treated with fine grout to level the surface.

Puttying the surface for pasting

Before wallpapering, the surface of the drywall must be puttied. It is necessary to do this, since the wallpaper is temporary material, and after some time it will be wanted, or will have to be changed.

We make putty

Caution: If you do not putty on the wall, removing the wallpaper can damage the top layer of drywall and, accordingly, spoil the wall. So, it is better not to skip the puttying stage, because in the future it will allow you to avoid additional costs for preparing the walls.

Putty is starting and finishing. Suitable for drywall finishing puttyand. It is designed to finish leveling the surfaces of ceilings and walls. Putty can be bought ready-made, or in the form of a dry mixture.

To putty you will need:

  1. Putty;
  2. Spatulas;
  3. Capacity for putty;
  4. Drill with a mixing nozzle, in case the putty is in the form of a dry mixture.

Caution: If you purchased a dry mixture, then it must be diluted with water strictly according to the instructions. For mixing, you need a drill with a special mixer nozzle.

Manual stirring is very time-consuming and does not provide enough high-quality mixing.

Next, when the mixture is ready, you can begin to putty:

  • You will need two spatulas: small and large (from 40 to 60 cm). A small putty knife needs to be putty putty and applied to a larger spatula, with which the putty will be applied directly to the wall.
  • To putty on the surface, you need to make a long smear in a circular motion at an angle of about 45 degrees. You should try to make the smear uniform, and the putty layer should not be more than 1-2 mm.
  • Then, with a small spatula you need to remove the remnants of the putty from the large one, and repeat the procedure again.

Attention: During puttying, do not try to remove all the irregularities, this can spoil all the work done. It is better to remove all defects after the putty has dried, by grinding.

We do the grinding of the plane
We do the grinding of the plane
  • After the putty surface has completely dried, it must be sanded. To do this, you can use an electric grinder or a special grinding block for manual grinding.
  • The grinding block is a two-piece tool. The upper part should be in the hand, and abrasive or grinding material is pulled onto the lower surface and fixed with clamps.
  • The abrasive material can be on a paper or fabric basis and have a different degree of granularity. Large irregularities should be rubbed with a nozzle with a larger grain, and for the final alignment - use a fine-grained nozzle.

When grinding, you should act carefully and slowly so as not to accidentally remove the layer more than required. Otherwise, you can not avoid re-filling the damaged surface.

Attention: When working with the grinding bar, a lot of fine dust is generated, therefore it is recommended to use a respirator.

  • After grinding the surface, you will see sinks on the plane. They must be treated with liquid putty and a rubber spatula.
  • We are waiting for the complete drying of the surface.

Caution: After the wall has been leveled and sanded, it must be primed again. Moreover, it is recommended to do this twice.

Re-priming immediately before gluing the wallpaper will allow you to remove fine dust formed after grinding, and will provide a stronger adhesion between the surface to be glued and the wallpaper.

Wallpapering drywall walls

Wallpapering on drywall begins with the correct layout of the plane. Here it is quite possible to provide a combination. Then you can visually enlarge the room.

  • First, using a plumb line, at a distance of about 10-15 cm from the corner, it is necessary to draw an even vertical line. From this line wallpapering will begin.
  • If you have plain wallpaper, you can cut them in advance, wallpaper with a picture must be joined, so you need to cut them in the course of gluing. You can cut the canvas on the floor, which must first be cleaned and covered with a film. The roll of wallpaper needs to be rolled out and a strip of the required length measured with a small allowance, then bent and cut along the fold with a knife.
  • You should also prepare glue for wallpaper.Do not forget that the glue should match the type of wallpaper. The glue can be sold in the form of a dry mixture, or already ready for use. It is important to prepare glue in the form of a dry mixture in strict accordance with the recommendations on the packaging.
  • Basically, glue is applied to the wallpaper canvas, and only if the wallpaper is non-woven, the adhesive is applied directly to the wall.
  • Next, the cut sheet should be spread on the prepared floor face down, and, using the roller, carefully glue the surface with glue, paying particular attention to the edges of the sheet. Then you need to fold this strip in half so that the glue soaks the canvas.
  • After 5-10 minutes (depending on the recommendations of the manufacturer of wallpaper and glue), you need to unclip the canvas and place it on the wall, aligning the edge along the line drawn in advance. After gluing the upper half, you need to level the canvas with a special roller, carefully "expelling" all the air bubbles. Movements are best made from the center to the edges. Protruding excess glue should immediately be removed with a clean, slightly moistened cloth. In the same way, you need to stick the bottom of the canvas. Excess wallpaper at the top and bottom should be carefully cut with a knife.
  • The next strip should be glued to the joint with the previous one. In case you purchased wallpaper with a pattern, you need to try on the canvas in advance and dock the pattern.
  • Wallpaper seams must be passed with a special roller, unless the wallpaper manufacturer does not recommend this.

How to paste wallpaper on drywall you now know. The main thing is preparation. Gluing the wallpaper on the drywall itself is not a difficult task and if you do not rush, then everything will be done efficiently and quickly.
