Whitewash the ceiling with water-based paint
To whitewash the ceiling with water-based paint is to give the room the desired design and embody any idea of its owner. The composition of this paint is a suspension, the basis of which is polymers and pigment substances mixed in water.
The peculiarity of the composition is that after coating, water evaporates intensively on the surface, and polymers contribute to the formation of a coating with high resistance to moisture. How to whitewash the ceiling with water-based paint with your own hands, the article will tell.

What are the features and varieties of coverage
Water-based paint can be one of four types:
- Mineral. It consists of:
- slaked lime;
- cement.
The price of such a coating is the lowest, it is used to cover surfaces made of concrete and brick, it has a short service life.
- Silicate. The basis of the paint is liquid glass with the addition of pigment. Its cost is small, and the surface has a good appearance for more than 20 years. Coating should not be taken for rooms where high humidity.
- Acrylic. It consists of acrylic resins, the paint is durable and wear-resistant, has a higher cost than the previous types, but also quite high performance. Moisture-resistant look, which can be used for bathroom and kitchen.
- Silicone. This is the most expensive type of water-based paint, the basis of which is silicone.
Advantages of the coating are:
- lack of an unpleasant smell;
- fast drying of the ceiling, just a few hours;
- environmentally friendly, has no harmful fumes to humans;
- after adding special pigments to the composition, it is possible to solve many variants of the tasks assigned to designers;
- the coating can be applied to surfaces from any materials, excluding metal ones.
After painting with water-based paint, it is easily washed off from the hands. It is very easy to wash the tool after doing the work, and the coating itself cannot be washed off with water.
What properties does water-based paint have?
Tip: Whitewashing the ceiling with water-based paint is a reliable and proven method for updating the surface, which acquires higher strength, in relation to stretch ceilings, which are easily damaged by sharp objects and even champagne cork.
The advantages of the coating include:
- The ceiling can be easily repainted at any time by changing color.
- High strength.
- Simple care, does not require the use of expensive tools when cleaning, just wipe with a rag or sponge.
- When applying paint does not need special knowledge, and repairs can be performed independently.
- The addition of colors allows you to get any shade.
Water-based paint is of two types:
- Glossy.
- Matt
Disadvantages of coverage:
- The surface should be perfectly flat.
- Pre-treatment of the ceiling with putty is required (see Ceiling putty in different versions) or primer.
When painting the surface, you can use:
- Brush or roller (see Roller for painting the ceiling: how to choose).
- Airbrush.
Tip: Do not use a spray gun for a small area. The material will be sprayed, which will increase its consumption.
How to prepare a surface for painting
Before painting the ceiling for whitewashing, it is necessary to prepare:
- Remove dirt. After cleaning the surface from old paint, it is thoroughly inspected, in which various contaminants are detected:
- oily stains are removed with a light, clean cloth, pre-moistened with water and soda ash. A rag is temporarily applied to the stain until it disappears, then the place is thoroughly washed with clean water.
- mold;
- rust is cleaned with ordinary warm water. But after cleaning, you will need to process this part of the ceiling with the composition of copper sulfate: up to 80 grams of vitriol is added to boiled water.
- Level the ceiling (see Plaster leveling the ceiling - how to do it right).
If there are various defects, bumps or cracks on the ceiling, it must be plastered or puttyed.
Tip: Aligning the ceiling should be done to whiten it correctly.
An adhesive solution is best suited for puttying the surface - it is applied easily, it is prepared very simply and is well kept on the coating.
Before filling the ceiling, a mixture is prepared: in a ratio of 1: 2: 2, chalk, gypsum and joiner's glue are mixed. To get a more liquid solution, water is added to the glue first. The ceiling is putty by hand with a spatula.
After puttying, the surface must be primed so that it becomes smooth enough. This forms a thin film that does not allow paint to pass through. Hard-to-reach spots are primed with a brush, and then a roller is used.
Tip: Before any stage of work, ensure that the primer is completely dry.
How to whitewash the ceiling
To carry out whitewashing with water-based paint, it is required to purchase the following tools and materials:
- Roller with handle of sufficient length.
- Brush for painting small and hard to reach areas.
- Primer roller.
- Deep penetration solution for primer.
- Protective accessories.
- Water-based paint.
Instructions for coating the ceiling with water-based paint:
- The surface is primed with a deep penetration primer, which will improve the adhesion of the paint to the surface of the walls and reduce the absorption of the material.
Tip: At this stage, you need to pay special attention to the primer of corners and hard-to-reach spots.
- Staining begins 60 minutes after the primer (see How to primer the ceiling: we understand in stages).
- Water-based paint is applied on the ceiling in two layers. For the first of them, the paint is diluted to a liquid consistency, for the second, an undiluted solution is used.
Tip: Before applying the paint, mix thoroughly until a homogeneous mass is obtained.
- Hard-to-reach spots are painted with a brush.
- Paint is applied in the first coat. To do this, it is poured into the tray, the mixture is collected on the roller, which is rolled along the ribbed part of the tray, coloring is performed.
- Painting work starts from one of the corners of the room. The first layer is applied parallel to the window opening. Unpainted areas are monitored to make the surface heterogeneous. After the paint dries, the surface is once again checked for uniformity, for the absence of stains.
- After a day, a second layer is applied perpendicular to the window opening, as in the photo. Using this process technology, surface homogeneity and high-quality staining can be achieved.
The staining process is shown in detail in the video in this article.
How to remove defects after painting the ceiling
Stains and stains on the ceiling surface will violate the beauty of any interior. The cause of staining may be a violation of the coating technology. More important is the correct choice of roller.
Wherein:
- Without stains, you can whiten the ceiling with a tool with long threads.
- It is better not to use velor for this - it absorbs too little paint, work with it is very slow.
- The foam tool leaves bubbles on the surface.
Streaks may remain on the ceiling surface.
The reasons for this:
- Inadequate rolling of the paint roller. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to roll on a painted surface, in the absence of paint on the tool.
- Uneven distribution of paint on the roller. It is necessary to try to dip it evenly into the composition and evenly press.
- With the formation of wide, slightly different color strips, the reason may be poor mixing of water-based paint.
How to paint a ceiling with a vacuum cleaner
When painting the ceiling, in addition to the roller and brush, you can use a vacuum cleaner.
The order of work in this case:
- Surface preparation, as in the previous case.
- A special nozzle for spraying paint is put on the vacuum cleaner.
- The paint is mixed in a bucket and poured into a jar.
- The nozzle is attached to the vacuum cleaner hose. After the nozzle is firmly fixed, the vacuum cleaner can be plugged in.
- The sprayer is directed from a distance of 30 centimeters to the place of painting.
- Finger closes the hole on the nozzle so that air does not come out.
- The vacuum cleaner turns on.
- For uniform application, whitewashing should be performed in circular motions.
- To ensure even whitewashing, it is necessary to control the distance, with a very close spray to the ceiling, paint droplets may appear.
- You need to start whitewashing from the corner, moving in the opposite direction. Everything should be done carefully and slowly.
A well-made ceiling coating will make any room beautiful and comfortable.
