How to paint the lining outside the house: choose a paint
Painting the lining outside the house is an important point in the decoration of the room. After all, here is the greatest environmental impact. The price of the material is quite high and as a result of incorrect painting, the lining will quickly become unusable.
How to paint the lining outside the house, we will analyze in detail today. Also on the video in this article and photo you can see the individual stages of selection and material parameters.

Harmful factors
Lining is a natural material. The best indicators of durability outside the building are shown by the coniferous wood trim, but it is not too durable, when compared with metal or siding (see Facing the house with siding in accordance with all the rules).
The following negative aspects affect the lining of wood:
- Humidity change which occurs during the day, as well as when the time of year changes;
- Negative temperatures outside in winter and heating in summer;
- Ultra-violet raysthat gradually lead to the destruction of wood fibers;
- Different microorganisms, which are quite a lot in the atmosphere;
- Fungal infectionthat hits a tree;
- Ordinary molddue to lack of ventilation and improper installation;
- Pests of various kinds - small insects and rodents.
Of course, over time, the lining of wood will dry out, which can lead to deformation. Therefore, it will be ideal if the processing and painting of the finish is carried out immediately after its installation.
Attention: When buying material, take it only after checking it for humidity. It should not be higher than 12 percent.
Point-by-point painting
How to paint the lining outside the house, we will understand below. But any coating should be applied to a properly prepared surface, otherwise it will not stand idle for a long time. The preparation system is the same for all dyes.
Let's look at the preparation in more detail:
- It is best, of course, to paint the lining, which was installed outside, immediately. But in practice this is not often seen. It is definitely worth considering the temporary factors, and in some cases not the quality of the previous painting.
- Paint that peels off with rags, too dry a surface, areas affected by rot - all this can often be found outside on the walls where the painting was poorly done or not at all.
Therefore, before moving on to painting, the lining is processed. Work will not cause difficulties and is done with your own hands, but it will take a lot of time.
The following steps are required:
- We clean. We walk along the surface with a brush if there are areas destroyed by decay - a scraper. We remove all dirt and dust. If old paint is present, we remove it especially carefully (see How to remove old paint from wood without problems) After that, I wash the surface with a solution of soda with a high concentration - about 0.3 kg of soda per ten liters of hot water;
- Destroyed areas should be replaced with new lining strips.;
- Separately, it is worth highlighting the moment of struggle with mold. To do this, there is a huge selection of special tools that process walls outside the building;
- For good paint adhesion, the surface can be further degreased with a detergent in whose composition alkali is present;
- Grinding;
- We ground with special compounds (cm. Primer wood before painting - process features), which prevent mold, fungus and bacteria from developing, this step can be skipped. But if you want the coating to be durable, then such a procedure is still better to do. Then the paint will go better, and the coating will turn out to be resistant and of high enough quality.
Only after all activities have been carried out can you paint the surface or cover it with different compositions. What specific treatment option for walls to choose - the owner will decide, based on his preferences. Paint for lining for outdoor work is quite different m. Here the choice is yours.
Antiseptics
Special impregnations are considered one of the most functional and modern methods of processing wooden lining from the outside. They prevent bacteria from multiplying, which prevents rot and the appearance of a blue tint on the tree.
Impregnations also have the following characteristics:
- The impact on wood is not surface, but volumetric. Impregnation gets into the lining a couple of millimeters;
- Many compounds protect the surface from ultraviolet rays, which has a positive effect on the appearance of the lining;
- Achievement is achieved from excessive loss or penetration of moisture, the finish on the outside will not dry out and damp even with significant rainfall.
Depending on the type of impregnation, you can solve several problems at once.
For instance:
- To paint with translucent or transparent compositions is worthwhile when the plans include preserving the original drawing and structure of the tree. You can show the desired color or change it altogether. Thus, it is possible to preserve the natural beauty of the material and achieve an artistic effect;
- Opaque coating helps to completely hide the existing flaws, while maintaining the relief. This is a good way to paint so as to hide the destroyed areas that were replaced with a lining with a different texture, mask all the flaws, knots, and so on;
- Impregnations with tinting and antiseptic properties are extremely effective, but they cost a lot. On top of that, painting with similar formulations will require a larger amount of formulation due to absorption.
Oil based paints
This dye is most often used for coating wood. But this is probably not the best option.
Let's look at how attractive it is:
- Absorbed into the base, which guarantees protection against moisture;
- Resistant to temperature and humidity.
But in this case, there are drawbacks that often do not belong to the essential ones, but rather to the category of natural ones:
- The composition dries long enough - from eight hours to several days. Therefore, contamination and sticky midges are possible. Plus, there is a risk of precipitation and surface changes due to moisture;
- The surface of the paint becomes dull over time, the color begins to change. This is especially noticeable on the extreme segments - light and dark color shades.
But if we consider oil paints in general, then they are quite functional. They are cheap, do not require special application, keep the characteristics for a long time, and almost everyone knows how to paint with standard options.
Acrylate Based Paints
This is a more modern option, but it costs a lot. Despite this, it provides useful features. For example, due to vapor permeability, varnishes and paints are best used on fresh wall paneling.
Acrylate paints have the following features:
- For a long time they retain their color;
- Resistant to atmospheric effects;
- Vapor permeable;
- The coating is flexible, so there is a chance of cracking from frost or heat.
Such compositions comply with environmental requirements, so they can be used for work outside the building, as well as in order to paint the room inside.
Alkyd varnishes
Although alkyd based varnishes have good user characteristics, they are not used very often. This is due to the need to have work experience, so that the surface as a result is neat and beautiful.
If you have knowledge, then such formulations provide:
- Flat surface;
- Good moisture protection;
- Strength;
- Stable color over time.
If the coating was made qualitatively, then it can last about ten years. After this, the varnish will be destroyed, and the process of removing it for another painting will take a lot of effort.
And more about painting
The most common and simple painting options include stain treatment. With its help, it is possible to achieve protection against adverse factors, as well as create bizarre artistic effects.
- Among other things, today a wide range of colors is sold, so this option can be safely compared with the use of translucent color impregnations. This method is usually referred to as the cheapest and easiest, but there is a significant drawback here - the coating will not last too long. The appearance of the walls from the outside will have to be updated once every several years.
- As one could understand, high-quality painting of the finish is available and is carried out without problems with due care and diligence. Modern formulations help provide different protection characteristics, and there is a huge selection of color shades on the market.
In any case, for painting the lining the main factor of durability is the preparation of the plane. Both appearance and durability depend on it. Therefore, do not neglect this issue and the instruction will help you not to miss anything.
