Drywall Features
Before processing drywall before painting, you need to get acquainted with the features and types of material, which can be:
- Ordinary wall or “standard sheet”.
- Ceiling mountedIt is most often used when leveling simple ceilings and multi-level structures.
- Moisture resistant - not replaceable when decorating bathrooms.
- Fire resistant. It differs in resistance to an open source of fire, while maintaining its position on the frame.
- Arched. You can install quite complex curved surfaces.
- Acoustic. It is used very rarely. The peculiarity of the material is the presence of perforations with many holes, the diameter of which is about one centimeter and a special soundproof sheet located on the back of the sheet. It is used in the design of recording studios, home theaters.
Material Advantages:
- Relatively low price.
- Ecologicaly clean.
- Does not burn.
- High soundproofing properties.
- It takes away excess moisture from the air, and easily gives it away when the air dries.
- It is simply processed, it is easily mounted.
- Minimum waste after finishing the room.
The disadvantages of drywall include:
- Relatively low strength and water resistance.
- Difficulty in fixing something.
Tip: Do not hammer nails into a drywall. Only dowels with screws can hold a small shelf or picture. It is impossible to hang heavy on them, it just will lead to the destruction of the wall.
After familiarizing yourself with the features of the material and installing it in the room, you need to determine how the surface will be finished.
How to prepare drywall for painting
Before painting drywall with your own hands, it is necessary to prepare the surface (see Is it possible to paint drywall without putty and how to do it).
For this:
- All sheets and the condition of the butt joints are carefully inspected. Usually, after covering the surfaces at the joints, most often, cracks remain.
Tip: Before painting the surface of drywall, the joints between the sheets should be pre-coated. Even the application of several layers of paint will not be able to completely hide the cracks.
- The protruding hats of the screws are recessed with a screwdriver.
- Plasterboard joints on the frame are putty (see How to putty drywall joints according to technology).
- Putty is put on a surface by putty knife.
- The reinforcing tape lies along the entire length of the joint.
- Another layer of putty is coated.
- The surface is carefully sanded.
- The ceiling is cleaned of fine dust and other dirt with a damp rag.
- You can paint drywall.
Tip: To make sure that the seams will not be visible through the paint, first apply a layer of it on a small area of the surface, and after complete drying, evaluate the result.If the putty is not visible through the paint, you can paint the entire ceiling.
What paint to choose for drywall
Choosing the type of drywall paint is not difficult. After properly preparing it for staining, you can use any enamel or paint. It all depends on the owner, who chooses how to paint the plasterboard arch, wall and ceiling.
To paint panels, you can use:
- A brush.
- Convenient and high-quality roller (seePaint rollers: consider in detail).
- Airbrush.
Drywall coloring is carried out by three types of paints:
- Emulsion. This type of coating is best for drywall staining.
Its advantages:- pleasant velvety, dull surface;
- a large number of colors. But when using this paint, keep in mind that after drying, it brightens several tones.
Water-based paint is white, and the color scheme is attached to it with various colors, which are purchased separately, which allows you to make any color or shade on drywall.
Tip: When adding color, its content should be no more than 5%.
The paint is easy to apply and easy to rinse, without the use of special solvents or liquids.
The disadvantages of the composition include:
- increased consumption compared to others;
- paint is not suitable for walls in rooms where there is high humidity.
- Oily. Suitable for any room. It lays well on drywall, and the surface as a result is durable, glossy.
The advantages of oil paints:- resistant to the negative effects of moisture and the action of an aggressive environment;
- they are economical in consumption.
TO cons oil paints include the presence in their composition of a large number of chemical components that are dangerous to humans, which requires staining of drywall only in a well-ventilated area.
- Enamels. After drying, the coating is smooth, durable and beautiful.
The advantages of using enamel:- a wide variety of shades and colors;
- it can be glossy or matte;
- after drying, the surface acquires a moisture-resistant film;
- low consumption of material per unit area;
- dries quickly.
Such coatings improve:
- aesthetic qualities of gypsum stone;
- provide him with corrosion protection;
- protect the material from ultraviolet radiation, increased moisture, sudden changes in temperature and other external influences.
The main thing in this case is to choose the right paint and qualitatively prepare the surface for work.
How to paint a drywall ceiling
For painting the ceiling and walls are used:
- Atomizer (seeWe select a spray gun for painting) This option allows the coating to make the highest quality, but not everyone has such a device, and its use requires certain skills.
- Brush With such a tool, in front of the roller, all hard-to-reach areas and corners are stained. At the same time, the movements are sharp and jerky, so that the paint lies evenly on the surface. When driving the brush back and forth, a “mottled” coating may result.
- Roller. Such tools are made with different coatings, have different pile lengths, which especially affects the final appearance of the surface to be painted: with an increase in pile length, a brighter structure can result.
Tip: The gypsum board ceiling should be painted with a roller only with a short pile, this will allow you to get a smooth and high-quality coating at the end of the work. Do not use a foam roller for painting the ceiling - it leaves marks. The roller for the ceiling must be taken with a long handle, as shown in the photo.
Before applying a new roller, it is necessary:
- soak in clean water;
- dry well.
The roller is dipped into the paint, rolled out on a ribbed surface on a special tray so that the paint lies evenly on the roller, and then the first coating layer is drawn on the wall, best of all, parallel to the window. In this case, it is very important to paint the ceiling with a roller, while in hard-to-reach places the paint has not yet dried. Each subsequent layer is applied with an overlap of 15 centimeters. Thus, the entire ceiling is painted.
After the first layer has dried, the second is applied, but at the same time, it is necessary to lead the roller from the window to the door. Using this method, you can get an even and uniform coating. If hair, speck or lint from the roller hits the ceiling, you need to immediately remove them, without waiting for the paint to dry.
Tip: Painting from gypsum plasterboard ceiling should be done in stages: two thin layers of paint are applied, this is preferable to one thick one. Each subsequent layer must be applied after a period of time, which is indicated in the instructions on the packaging of the paint.
How to paint a decorative stone from plaster
Before painting gypsum, you need to get acquainted and adhere to some rules:
- Do not apply paint to a previously unimpreted or not yet dry surface.
- Paint should not be applied to an unpolished old decorative stone: it will begin to crumble very quickly.
- For painting, you need to use special waterproof paints for outdoor use.
- It is better to add special hardeners to the composition - when painting a stone, they will improve the quality of the surface.
- The duration of the effect can be increased by spraying on the surface of the varnish.
Subject to these simple rules for painting gypsum stone, the coating will last long enough and will be a good protection of the material from corrosion and harmful external influences.
Before painting gypsum, good paint is acquired, and tools are prepared:
- Brush
- Quality roller.
- Airbrush. Its advantage is spraying, and not spreading of the coloring composition, which makes it possible to obtain a plain, natural color. When adjusting the distance from the airbrush to the surface of the drywall and the ink jet, you can give the gypsum stone shades of the same color light or darker.
- Grout for joints.
- Means for protecting people during work: gloves, respirator.
The technology for painting gypsum stone is as follows:
When applying paint with a spray gun, the distance to the wall should be about 45 centimeters so that the surface relief does not interfere with the spraying. The pressure on the compressor is selected 3-3.5 atmosphere.
When working with a spray gun, the productivity and quality of the processed surface increases: while the pile of the brush does not begin to cover the paint zone, and you can see the entire surface during operation and immediately make the necessary corrections:
- Change color depth.
- Change the saturation of the hue.
It is convenient to spray-paint the laid gypsum stone with a spray gun, without sorting it, covering those places that you need. Using brushes of different sizes, you can create an interesting mosaic panel, painting each individually laid tile of material.
