Choose a color for the corridor
When deciding what color to paint the corridor in the apartment, first of all, you need to figure out the design style.
Designers give the following versatile entrance hallway tips:
Light shades | In domestic apartments, you can often find oblong small hallways, in which there is usually no natural light source. This forces us to use only neutral and light colors, as they make the room noticeably lighter and visually expand the space. For this reason, preference should be given to the pastel spectrum: milk, beige, sand, golden, coffee and so on. |
Gloss | There is another law of designers, which says that to expand the space you need reflective surfaces.
This is especially useful in the case of the ceiling, which in ordinary houses is quite low. |
Doorways | To smooth out the negative effect of a narrow hallway, modern craftsmen resort to small tricks - a doorway (see. Finishing doorways with various materials) located at the end of the corridor is painted in a saturated and dark color, which will create a certain contrast, expanding the room. |
If these rules are observed, you can hide all the disadvantages of the room and optimize the available space. But our plans include not only masking the inaccuracies of builders, but also emphasizing the advantages of the room.
So:
- With the help of paint, it is possible to highlight not only openings, but also to focus on other details of the interior - for example, furniture or mirrors;
- If you want the walls to have an additional texture, it is better to stock up with wallpaper for painting - they will make the surface pleasant to the touch;
- Use a stencil to create a more original finish. They can be bought in specialized stores or made on their own, it all depends on the desire of the person. Any motifs are suitable as patterns: butterflies, flowers, sketches and abstract figures. The main thing is to carefully and thoughtfully do all the work;
- If you want the hallway to be exclusive, you can turn to artists who, based on your needs, will paint a room;
- Fairly budget, but no less winning option - painting the entire room, including the baseboard, floor. Observing one tone, you can refresh old furniture, give the hallway the atmosphere of Italy - and all this can be done only with a few liters of paint;
- If you have not decided what color to paint the walls in the corridor, look at its dimensions: when the room is narrow, it can be expanded with horizontal patterns and stripes;
- For spacious hallways, dark shades are suitable, combinations of different colors for structuring and zoning the room.
Attention: Regardless of which color was chosen, you must try to combine it with the interior of the whole house.
If we consider the design of the hallway comprehensively, then a lot will depend on the parameters of the room - shape, width, degree of illumination, number of openings and more. But there is an idea that in any case will look presentable. It is a simple and quite original solution, like a combined finish.
Hallway Paint Properties
So that the finish remains attractive for a long time and protects the walls well, it is worth paying attention to the conditions in which it will be used.
Features of hallways and corridors can be listed as the following list:
- The proximity of the street, eternal drafts, often opening doors lead to the fact that there are constant temperature changes in the room. Because of this, the material must be flexible in order to adequately respond to such differences and cope with the extensions;
- High loads on the finish are due to the fact that in this room they will constantly change clothes, outerwear will come in contact with the walls, staining and moisturizing them, as well as splashes from shoes can fall on the lower area of the walls. That is why the finishing layer must be wear-resistant;
- All objects located in the apartment get there through the corridor (materials for construction, furniture, sledges, various equipment and so on). When transporting such items, friction, shock and other mechanical effects on the walls often occur. This means that the finish layer must be strong enough;
- The entrance hall is part of the apartment, so it can also be attributed to the residential area. Based on this, the materials for decoration should not contain poisons and toxins, as well as other substances that can harm human health. In addition, the finish should allow the walls to breathe and let off steam.
Attention: We can conclude that the paint for the hallway must be stable and wear resistant, flexible and moisture resistant. Plus, it should be safe and let steam through.
How to paint the walls of the corridor
Paint for the corridor is also selected according to the requirements. Mostly waterproof dye is used. But how to understand more specifically what paint to paint the walls in the corridor? The most accurate and complete all the criteria meets only one class - water-dispersion paint.
This group includes several types of materials that differ in cost and composition:
Polyvinyl Acetate Dispersions | Such paints are distinguished by a weak level of wall protection against wear and mechanical damage, as well as low water resistance. Therefore, they are not so often taken to decorate hallways; |
Butadiene-building mixtures | They are characterized by high resistance to moisture and good resistance to wear, excellent decorative properties. The only negative is photophobia, but in our case this is not so critical; |
Acrylic | Here we are talking about acrylic compositions, characterized by high moisture resistance, protection against damage, durability, elasticity and a large selection of colors. They are considered the highest quality paints from the group in question, but they are also much more expensive than the other two types. |
Attention: Based on the above characteristics, we can safely say that styrene or acrylic paints are suitable for solving the task. If you are looking for the right quality at affordable prices, then choose styrene butadiene dispersion for interior use.
Properties of alkyd enamel:
- Alkyd enamel is also quite suitable for working in the hallway, but do not forget that it contains harmful components that, when dried, emit a pungent odor.
- Work with open doors and windows, wear a respirator and actively ventilate the room for three days from the moment the composition is applied to the surface;
- Among modern companies there are alkyd paints with polyurethane, which do not have a pungent odor, however, their cost is quite high.
To paint metal parts and protect them from corrosion, use electrically conductive paint; flame retardants are suitable for painting heating elements (see Types of paints for metal: which one to choose).
Corridor painting
For those who decide to paint the walls in the corridor with their own hands, we provide detailed instructions:
- First, the walls need to be removed from the old coating. Paint can be removed by special means or removed with a scraper. A grinder equipped with a wire brush will do. It is simpler to remove the wallpaper, we simply wet them with water and work with a spatula;
- Carefully inspect the surface, if there are any flaws they need to be removed with putty. Stucco that crumbles (see How to strengthen the crumbling plaster with your own hands), beat off and immediately repair with a solution of cement or putty;
- A layer of gypsum putty is applied to the wall. After drying, it is necessary to cover everything with a small layer of the finishing putty;
- The entire surface is rubbed with an emery grater, we try to polish everything with the highest quality. As a result, the surface should be smooth;
- We remove dust, vacuum everything around, apply an acrylic primer with deep penetration;
- As soon as the soil dries, proceed to the first layer. Using a brush, rub the paint with a thin layer;
- After the initial layer dries, take a roller and apply the next. Finally, the wall is covered last.
- If you have a large plane, then use the spray gun (see We select a spray gun for painting) Then the work will not take much time. Also in this case, do not hold the spray gun perpendicular to the wall. Then there will be smudges. Paint should be applied at a slight angle.
Attention: Do not forget about the molar tape, with which you can make smooth borders and not stain adjacent areas.
Than paint the walls in the corridor, you now figure it out. Having done the work yourself, the price will not be high. Instructions on the rules for choosing dyes you have. After looking at the photo, you can quickly determine the choice of dye.
