Facade decoration is a question that confuses many homeowners and, following the easiest and most understandable way, they choose painting. But here, it turns out, there are many difficulties, and they relate to the choice of material.

In this article we will talk about what a textured facade paint is, what it happens to be, and how to work with it, but first things first.

Types of paints

The main difference between facade paints from each other is a connecting component, and when choosing you can start from a simple rule: what is the basis, such and the paint. However, the quality of the entire coating, as well as its resistance to aggressive influences, which every day check the strength of the facades of houses, depends on the main component.

Despite what paint will be preferred, they should all have common characteristics:

  • Moisture resistant: precipitation and washing.
  • Resistance to solvents and chemicalsthe higher this indicator, the more powerful detergents can be used when cleaning the facade from contamination.
  • Resistance to mechanical damagethat, one way or another, occur during the operation of the facade.
  • Resistance to fading and exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun.

Before proceeding to a detailed description of the types of facade paint, we present a small table that clearly shows all of the listed characteristics:

Vinyl facade paint

Wood Vinyl Clear
Wood Vinyl Clear

Here, a vinyl filler, or more simply, plastic, acts as an active binder. Such paint can be applied to any surface and has high adhesion with them.

Also, it can be just transparent, as shown in the photo above. This paint creates a durable film on the surface and protects the walls from most negative factors.

Since any textured paint for facades, to one degree or another, has the same positive qualities, we believe that it will be more correct to list the negative nuances. Which, unfortunately, is in all materials.

Important! The high price of paint is not a guarantee of its high quality. And the more expensive the material, the more often it is faked, which you should always remember when choosing paint in a store or on the market.

Minuses:

  • Low vapor permeability. Vinyl paint creates a durable film on the surface, which completely does not let moisture out.
  • Very high ductility, which limits the ability to create texture patterns.
  • A certain complexity of application, especially if there is no experience in working with this material.

Acrylic paint

The most popular material for painting the facade combines the low cost and quality of the finished coating. Acrylic paint has a water base, and therefore is completely harmless to health. It can be bred to any consistency, and it is easy to create the most intricate texture patterns.

Another indisputable plus of acrylic paint is a wide variety of colors, and even if a suitable shade was not found in the store, it can be completely created using color paste (see How to paint: choose an option).

Important! When tinting the paint yourself, you need to very clearly calculate the amount that will be required for all the work, and tint a little more, since subsequently it will be very difficult to repeat the selected shade.

Minuses:

  • Low UV resistance. Paint can lose its original color after a few years.
  • Weak resistance to mechanical damage.
  • Decomposition of coloring pigment in contact with many forms of chemical solvents.

Advice! When creating a texture pattern with acrylic paint, it is best to initially tint the paint, since subsequently it will be very difficult to paint the relief coating.

Silicone paint

The most durable coating is created using silicone paints. Their indisputable advantage is full resistance to moisture and vapor permeability, which can only be competed with polymer-based paints, which will be discussed below.

Another positive nuance of this material is its high viscosity and ductility, due to which the paint is able to hide most of the defects on the surface.

Minuses:

  • High cost compared to most facade paints.
  • High material consumption per square meter of area.

Advice! When buying silicone paint, you always need to ask the seller for quality certificates. If for some reason they are not available, this is an occasion to look for another store.

Polymer paints

Another name for polymer dyes is silicate, since the main component in their composition is liquid glass, which perfectly lets moisture out, while preventing it from getting under the coating.

An interesting feature of this type of facade paint is that it is practically not contaminated and repels dirt and dust, which often accumulate on the facades. But even if, as a result of long-term operation, contaminants still appear, the coatings can be washed without fear even with the use of strong detergents.

Minuses:

  • High price.
  • Difficulty applying.
  • Great expense.

Important! Liquid glass is completely harmless to the human body, but if it gets into the eyes or the respiratory tract, you should immediately consult a doctor and not try to take independent actions.

Mineral paints

As in the case of stucco mixtures, the main binder component of the paint is cement, respectively, and paints have all the qualities inherent in mineral plasters. And the main ones are high vapor permeability and moisture resistance.

Of course, such a paint can not be called high-quality, since cement mixtures have a set of their drawbacks, which you need to know about when choosing this finishing material:

  • Low resistance to sudden changes in temperature.
  • Possibility of cracking of the coating upon drying.
  • Low resistance to mechanical damage.

As can be seen from all of the above, any facade paint has its drawbacks, so when choosing, you need to build on the individual characteristics of the building and climatic conditions.

Textured Paint Tools

You can learn more about how textured drawings are created by watching the video in this article, and we, in turn, will talk about tools that may be needed in the work.

Roller

The most simple and popular tool for applying paint, especially if the work is done with your own hands and without proper experience. Today in construction stores you can find a wide variety of nozzles on the roller, with which it is possible to create the most ingenious drawings.

Construction trowel

Plastic base trowel

This tool is suitable only for paints with a thick consistency, as they are applied to the surface by rubbing. Therefore, the texture patterns that can be created are limited.

The easiest way is to alternate the force of pressure on the trowel, resulting in a kind of recesses of various depths.

Applicator

Imitation wood texture applicator

Work with this tool takes place in two stages:

  • Drawing on a paint surface.
  • Pass the applicator over the entire surface to obtain the desired pattern.

Of course, this process is not fast and can take much longer than working with other tools, but the result will be significantly different, as it is impossible to achieve such a pronounced texture in other ways.

Airbrush

Electric spray gun
Electric spray gun

Spray guns can be of two types:

  1. Electric. Poorly suited for thick paints, as there is not enough power for high-quality and fast spraying.
  2. Pneumatic Air which is supplied from the compressor receiver. Such a tool can regulate the outlet pressure, which means it is suitable for all types of paints.

Each spray gun is accompanied by detailed instructions for working with it, but even theoretical knowledge of all the nuances does not guarantee a high-quality coating. You can’t do without certain experience, and you can just practice on small surfaces until your hand gets used to the instrument.
