Modern technology: textured decoration in the interior
Textured surface finishes are at their peak today. After all, nothing so diversifies the interior of the room as an intricate relief, three-dimensional image, or the original panel.
There are many ways to achieve this, and in this article we will show you some ideas for wall decoration.
The content of the article
Decorative plastering
This type of wall decor is perhaps the oldest. Only now the concept of "fresco" smoothly flowed into the term "decorative plaster».
So:
- Varieties of this material every year only increases. Naturally, the component composition of solutions that are created both on the basis of mineral raw materials and with the addition of polymers also changes.
The most difficult to work, and therefore the most expensive, is Venetian plaster. - It contains transparent wax, gypsum and marble dust of finest grinding. The difficulty lies in the fact that creating a picture on the wall is achieved by multilayer application of the solution, at least six to seven layers.
- The image has a depth inherent in the texture of marble or onyx. And the picture is always individual, it is almost impossible to repeat it.
This is not the case when you can do the job yourself.
- Textured plaster looks a little different. Its main components are mineral granules and binders: epoxy and acrylic resins, polyurethane, lime.
The degree of density, the type of drawing obtained, and, of course, its price depend on exactly which components are part of the plaster. - Such plaster is always white, and pigments are sold to it, so the master has the ability to color the solution at his discretion. Well, the variety of drawings is almost limitless, and entirely depends on the imagination of the artist.
- The graffiti technology, called graffito, is one of the most popular. Translated from Italian, the name sounds like “scratched”, and is directly related to the method of applying this type of plaster.
- The essence of the technique is as follows: two or three layers of a solution of different colors are successively applied to the wall surface. Until the last layer has hardened, cuts are made on it, over the entire thickness, with a special tool so that the previous layer of a different color appears.
- Many experts use cardboard stencils soaked with drying oil, but there are masters who can do without them. By the way, in this way, not only the walls in the rooms are decorated, but also the facades (seeFacade decoration: overview of materials and specifications), perform architectural elements for framing columns, window areas, fireplaces.
Relief panels are made in the same way. - In order to better understand how the decorative decoration of the room is performed using the sgraffito method, a video clip in which specialists show the master class will be a better guide than any instruction.
- To create a beautiful texture, it is not necessary to use decorative plaster. If the walls in your house, for example, are sheathed with drywall, you can take on board structural paint.
There are many types of coatings, including fluorescent, which can be obtained by decorative staining. - Not so long ago a new type of coating appeared, called flocks. This is a loose mixture consisting of particles of various shapes and colors.
A special adhesive mixture is applied to the wall, and until it has dried, the flocks or, as they are also called, chips, are thrown onto a sticky base.
The random adhesion of particles creates all kinds of effects, sometimes unpredictable. You can sprinkle chips manually.
In the case when it is necessary to finish a large room, use a spray gun. Further, the wall with particles adhered to it is covered with a protective composition.
If you use a stencil, you can make drawings from flocks.
Wall coverings
Textured wall decoration can be performed using various coatings. Often, different types of these coatings are combined with each other, including with decorative plasters, which we wrote about in the previous chapter.
So:
- Look at the photo below and you will see at least three types of coatings created in one room: Venetian plaster on the walls, decoratively painted plasterboard niche (see. How to finish a niche in the wall and in the partition), and a magnificent hand-painted panel, made on the surface of plywood. These are the ideas in interior decoration that designers visit.
- Another great way to decorate walls in an original way is to use gypsum or polyurethane stucco, as well as a frieze. In fact, there is no difference in which stucco to use.
From that and from other material the most beautiful configuration elements are made. - Those and other stucco figures are mounted on glue, only different in composition. They can be painted, and gold leaf finish gives the stucco elements a special chic and respectability to the whole interior.
This decor has always been popular in aristocratic houses and noble mansions. Gilding was used in temples and icon painting to give a rich look to furniture, chandeliers, and interior items.
- Most often, gilding in the interior was combined with wall paintings, which transformed the interior of any home beyond recognition. In fact, tinsel is the thinnest gold plate, flattened by hand forging to the thickness of a hair.
- So it was before, and now, in the age of technological progress, it is done by machine tools with program control. To make a kilogram of gold leaf, it will take more than two kilograms of ordinary gold.
As you know, the price of such a finish is far from affordable for everyone.
- It is much easier to use decorative textured panels, which are now a great many on the construction market. And the color, if desired, you can choose a golden one.
This, of course, is not gold leaf, but it also looks very beautiful. You can verify this by looking at the image above. - Quite often, for the decor of the wall, any three-dimensional panels are used, in combination with small-format mirror tiles. It can be 3D panels of gypsum, bamboo or leather tiles, as in the picture below.
- You can not ignore the roll coverings used to create a beautiful textured surface on the walls. First of all, this is a wallpaper of various types: with a large pattern, a relief for painting, a 3D image, with various fabric and veneer coatings.
- A special kind of wallpaper is linkcrust, which has unique convex patterns and geometric patterns that immediately distinguish it from other roll coatings. From wallpaper of other types, linkcrust differs not only in appearance, but also in the way it is glued to the wall.
Our site has an article detailing this technology.
- Designers constantly present us with new ways wall decoration. So the stretch ceilings smoothly moved to a vertical plane, turning into stretch walls.
The installation technology of such a coating is no different from the installation of a stretch ceiling. The same frame around the perimeter of the wall, the same methods of tensioning the canvas.
And, judging by the example we have given, such a decor looks very original on the wall.
- Cladding the wall with fabric also looks unusual. And, most importantly, it’s easy to do this - you don’t need to attract specialists for this.
The main thing is to choose the right fabric that will not fade, and has sufficient strength and breathability. - The technology of this work is simple. Stripes of the required size are cut out of the canvas, the edges of which are wiped on the overlock and folded.
If there is a fabric whose width is equal to the height of the wall, then the strip will be solid, without seams. After they have sorted out the fabric, they begin to manufacture a wooden frame and strengthen the sheets of drywall or plywood on it.
- It is necessary to stick thin foam rubber on the finished frames. Before pulling the fabric, it is treated with a hydrophobic solution, which will prevent the absorption of moisture by the canvas, as well as repel dust.
Fastening the canvas to the frame is carried out with nails or screws with decorative heads. Anything can be used to finish the seams: braid, decorative rail, frieze, ceiling plinth. - You can not ignore the decorative stone. Its relief and beautiful texture can decorate any interior: from the hallway to the balcony.
And it doesn’t matter which stone was used: natural or artificial.
- In our example, the wall of the kitchen is finished with artificial white sandstone. In combination with decorative niches on another wall, staggered, and an original round lamp, the room turned out to be not only cozy, but also stylish.
There are more varieties of wall coatings with which you can get an unusual textured surface than we could mention in our article. But even this is enough to choose the appropriate option.
How to bring the idea to life, you decide. And we, for our part, wish you creative inspiration and a successful choice.
