Design features
A self-made niche is an alternative to bulky furniture walls, which previously could be found in the design of living rooms of many typical apartments.
Tip. In the design of the niche, you can hide the wiring when installing fixtures or a TV with other equipment in it.
LED backlighting or built-in spot lighting will emphasize the expressiveness of this decorative solution in the interior of any room.
Creating a decorative niche in a room has its positive aspects:
- Using a niche, you can save free space in the room by abandoning bulky furniture;
- It is possible to create a functional capacious storage area in accordance with personal preferences;
- When the equipment is located, a concealed wiring device behind the niche structure is possible, which will give tidiness to the interior;
- In the design of the niche, you can hide communications - pipes, wires;
- Significant financial savings can be made by refusing to purchase furniture.
A drywall niche equipped with additional shelves of glass or wood resembles a custom-made rack.
Niches that are used as a decorative element can have a very different shape, due to the versatility of the use of drywall.
Important! The appearance of the niche should correspond to the stylistic orientation used in the interior, area and configuration of the room.
Niche Design
Before proceeding with the construction of a niche structure, it is necessary to have a clear idea of the desired result and the location of the niche in the interior. The result of an ill-conceived design may be that a recess or alcove will be blocked by objects of decor. Therefore, you must first consider the arrangement of furniture, and then choose the way to decorate the free area of the walls.
If you decide to use a niche to place a TV in it, it is important to consider that the design of the niche should not overlap the plane of the screen - it should be visible from anywhere in the room.
There are several rules that are recommended to adhere to when designing a niche in the space of a room:
- A niche can be used to adjust rooms with planning or technical flaws that require masking;
- Using niches, the geometry of space can be adjusted;
- The recess in the wall should not be decorated in darker colors than the shade of the walls;
- The arch of the arched structure can be painted a tone darker than the main shade;
- It is important to consider the combination of niche and wall decoration materials;
- Having mirrored surfaces in niches, you can visually enlarge the room.
Niche Lighting
When using illumination in a niche, a special atmosphere is created in the room. Usually this is the living room or bedroom, where lighting of varying intensity is welcomed.
Illumination of niches may not be required in the kitchen or bathroom, as these have sufficient artificial lighting due to ceiling lights.
Also, niches in narrow corridors, hallways or flights of stairs inside houses will not be out of place.
Important! Do not use lamps with strong power in niches, so that the interior decoration does not burn out.
Niche decoration methods
Niche design must be thought out in advance. The method of decorating it depends on this. You can use a combination of decorative finishing materials. For a room in bright colors, decorated with wallpaper or stucco, the niche recess can be made darker in tone.
If for decoration the same finishing material is used as on the walls, then it can be distinguished with the help of bordering with facing panels or moldings, which should contrast with the shade of the walls.
For the kitchen and bathroom, you can use a bright mosaic as the inner surface of the niche.
How to independently create a drywall niche
Punching a niche in a brick wall or concrete is troublesome, so it is best to use drywall to create an artificial niche. In addition, the price of this building material is affordable.
Instructions for creating a niche consists of the following sequence of actions:
- At the initial stage, creating a decorative recess in the wall, marking is applied to the wall;
Important! The depth, width and height of a niche depends on its purpose.
- Then, in accordance with the marking, profile guides are fastened (usually a ceiling PN profile with a section of 27 * 28 mm, having compact dimensions) along all external lines, as well as the ceiling, floor and adjacent walls, if this is planned by design. Thus, a frame is formed, to which metal profiles 27 * 60 will be fixed;
- The joints are tightened either with self-tapping screws “bugs”, or with galvanized wood screws with a press washer;
Important! In order for the structure to have the correct geometry, throughout the work it is necessary to control the fastening of the profiles using the building level.
- Next, the frame is assembled in stages: first, the main verticals that need to be placed between the ceiling floor, then stiffeners perpendicular to the wall, then the belts that form the horizontal niches (very often for convenience, in places where there are no load-bearing verticals, they connect and install PN profiles so so that their free sides are located relative to each other at an angle of 90 degrees). The frame is filled with belts and rigidly fixed.
- After creating a metal frame, it is sheathed with sheets of drywall using self-tapping screws;
- At the joints of drywall sheets close with reinforcing tape;
Important! At the stage of forming the frame and covering it with drywall, it is necessary to make all the necessary holes for the backlight and to bring out the electrical wiring properly.
When the structure is assembled, it must be puttied, paying particular attention to the joints and recesses in the places where the screws are attached (when attaching the screws, they should be pressed into drywall).
About how to properly putty the walls with finishing putty, the video in this article will give comprehensive information;
- When the putty dries, it is ground to obtain a smooth, even surface;
- Finishing can be done with any finishing materials that can be used on the surface of drywall. It can be decorative plaster, paint or wallpaper. You can use facing decorative materials - artificial stone or tile.
Important! When creating a niche in the bathroom, it is necessary to use moisture-proof drywall (GKLV).
