What materials can be used as corner trim elements of the chimney

Kondratieva Tatyana

If the chimney is covered with plaster, then the corners are the most vulnerable to the damaging effects of temperature influences. Therefore, to eliminate the negative consequences, it is necessary to perform additional decoration of the corners. To do this, there are several options using various materials and methods for their installation.

In practice, the following are mainly used as corner elements for decorating a chimney:

  • Decorative rock.
  • Natural sinter.
  • Decorative overlays of profile tin.

All of them have almost the same properties and characteristics and combine perfectly with plaster.

Decorative rock

This finishing material is very often used for outdoor work. There are also special corners made of artificial stone, which are used not only in the decoration of the corners of the building itself, but also in the chimney.

This type of stone:

  • Durable and reliable.
  • Easy to install.
  • Moistureproof and fireproof.
  • Frost-resistant and able to withstand significant temperature extremes.

Often used an artificial decorative stone, which has a wide range of shades and various imitations of natural stone, and it costs much cheaper

Tip. Mount only on a flat surface. Since it is plastered in the chimney, then additional work on leveling is not required.

Mounting decorative stone

Materials and tools:

  • Special glue for artificial stone, which is used for outdoor applications, or asbestos mortar.
  • Putty knife, for applying adhesive solution.
  • Construction level for even installation of each decoration element.
  • Decorative putty (can not be used).

The material is cut using a tile cutter, but if you select not solid corners, but small pieces of artificial stone, then cutting may not be necessary.

This material differs from the previous one in its environmental friendliness and durability. You can easily use it in the decoration of the chimney. The material has a wide variety of forms and types of natural agglomerate. Granite or marble is most commonly used, but other types are also acceptable.

Natural stone:

  • Practical and durable.
  • Reliable and very durable.
  • Just mounted on the surface.
  • Moisture and frost resistant.
  • Withstands sudden temperature changes.
  • It does not burn and does not melt when exposed to high temperatures.

Note. The only drawback will be the cost of such a material, which is very high compared to artificial materials.

Installation of natural stone

In order to carry out the installation of natural sinter in a chimney, you will need:

  • Cement mortar (asbestos mortar or adhesive of high strength and fireproof).
  • Putty knife, as with the installation of decorative stone.
  • Building level.
  • Tile cutter.

Tip. For finishing a plastered chimney, do not use large sizes of natural stone. It is better to opt for small elements that are easy to install and do not create additional load on the finish of the structure.

Decking

This material has a sheet shape, and due to the ease of bending, takes a variety of forms.

It has excellent properties.:

  • Strength.
  • Moisture resistance.
  • Practicality.
  • Durability.
  • Fire resistance and ability to withstand temperature extremes and very high temperatures.

There are different shades and imitations of the surface (brick or masonry and more).

Installation of corrugated board

You can install corrugated board using self-tapping screws or special rivets. The intermediate cavity between the plaster and the decorative corner is filled with asbestos mortar.

It is recommended that all joints of such material be sealed with sealant to prevent the ingress of moisture.
