There is nothing more beautiful and original than the decoration with wall cloth. The elegance of the room is simply mesmerizing.
Despite the large number of modern finishing materials, the fabric has recently become very popular.

Fabrics that can be used in finishing work

In order to perform room decoration using fabric, you can use any of its appearance and texture.
Quite popular are:

  • Chintz.
  • Silk.
  • Drap.
  • Tapestry.
  • Velours.
  • Velvet.

Characteristics:

  • If there are doubts about the proposed options, then you can use the usual furniture fabric, which in principle is intended for any finishing work. She is not afraid of moisture.
  • It is very easy and simple to work with suede, velor and other dense fabric. These types are conveniently glued.
Cotton and viscose are easy to stretch. In order to perform drapery on the walls, it is best to use very light fabrics that have a high density.

Tip. As practice has shown, in finishing work it is best to use synthetic fabrics, since they are more easily susceptible to natural ones.

Note. It is also worth considering that the price of this type of finish in some cases may be higher than when using wallpaper.

Fabric finishing methods

Pulling fabric
Pulling fabric

At the moment, there are several options for finishing work with the use of fabric.
Namely:

  • Tensioning the fabric.
  • Sticking.
  • Drapery.

The technology of each such process is individual.

Pulling fabric

Pulling fabric is the easiest way to decorate a room.
In order for the finish to be of high quality, it is necessary to use:

  • Wooden slats are small in size.
  • Wood screws.
  • Screwdriver.
  • The expansion bolt shield (if necessary).
  • Level.
  • Pencil.
  • Roulette.

Stages:

  • With the help of a level, a pencil and a tape measure, the necessary distance from the floor and ceiling is measured to mount the wooden battens.

Tip. To simplify the task around the entire perimeter, you need to draw a line for mounting the rail.

  • Wooden slats are mounted under the ceiling and above the surface of the floor on the wall using dowels or screws. In this case, it all depends on the wall structure.
If it is brick or stone, then it is better to use a dowel. If it is made of drywall, then self-tapping screws can be used.
  • The distance between the upper and lower slats should be the same along the entire perimeter so that the fabric is stretched evenly and defects in the fabric finish are not formed.
  • The fabric is stretched and secured to the rails using nails with decorative hats. After completion of work, these hats can be hidden under a decorative decoration in the form of a floor or ceiling plinth.

Tip.
Immediately the fabric attaches to the top rail and stretch across the width. After that, it is necessary to stretch it evenly and fix it to the lower rail gradually, so that as a result there are no wrinkles.

Due to the fact that the rail has its own size and acts as a frame for the fabric, a space is created between the wall and the material, which can be used for insulation work.
They apply:

  • Thin foam.
  • Thin polyurethane foam.
  • Felt.
  • Mineral wool in small mats.

Installation:

  • How to fix the insulation on the wall surface, because the fabric will not hold it? Everything is very simple.
For this, special construction glue is used, which is applied to the surface of the wall and to the surface of the insulation material itself.

Tip. Since the fabric can very easily absorb impurities and moisture, the process of warming the room must be approached very carefully and try to ensure that the glue does not come out through the joints of the material.

  • If this still happened, then you can use the finishing tape and hide the defects under it. It is glued to the joints of the material.
It is also worth considering that you can not use ordinary glue for the installation of insulation material. He can corrode it over time and the insulation will become deformed.

Note. If the fabric is a light shade, then the insulation should be similar.

Sticking fabric

How to glue the fabric on the wall

Sticking on fabric has recently become very popular. kind of wall decoration. For this, any kind of fabric is used.
To carry out such a process, it is necessary to qualitatively prepare the surface. It should be flat, as well as for gluing the surface with wallpaper.
The use of additional materials:

  • There are two options: drywall and plaster.
  • Using drywall is a fairly quick and easy way to level the surface. As for plaster, the result of the work will directly depend on the master.
  • This method is considered dusty and time-consuming.
  • After it always remains a lot of garbage. What can not be said about leveling the surface with drywall.

In order to stick the fabric to the surface, you can’t do without a partner.
For the process itself you will need:

  • A sharp clerical or ordinary knife with a thin blade.
  • Old powerful "grandmother" iron.
  • Special furniture glue that can harden only under the influence of high temperatures.
  • Metal ruler (at least 1 m).

Stages:

  • Since furniture glue hardens only under the influence of high temperature, you can immediately smear them the entire surface. After that, the canvas is taken and the process of gluing the surface begins.
  • Stretch the fabric also from top to bottom. To prevent the fabric from moving away, the upper corner of the canvas is fixed to the surface with a small nail.
Using an iron according to the principle of leveling the wallpaper on the surface, the fabric is ironed. You also need to start it from top to bottom so that the glue is gradually absorbed into the wrong side of the fabric and solidifies.

Tip. To prevent defects in the finishing of fabrics in such a process, the fabric should also be well stretched.

  • It is for this reason that a second person is needed who will hold the canvas in place at the top of the wall. If there is no partner, then the fabric is fixed with the help of studs or a conventional construction stapler.
  • Ironed the cloth several times to achieve the desired result. After the whole process, the remainder of the fabric at the top and bottom is cut with a knife.
But here it is necessary to act very carefully, since the glue in such places might not gain strength and the fabric will begin to fray. To prevent this from happening at the bottom of the wall and at the top, as well as at the joints of the paintings, it is necessary to apply more furniture glue, which after hardening will not allow the finish to deform.
  • The glue is very elastic and dries completely within 3 days. After completion of work, the surface must be checked for air bubbles that could have formed under the canvas and they do not allow it to lie flat on the wall.
If they are, then we must act on the principle of eliminating bubbles on the wallpaper. They can be pierced or re-glued to the surface completely, the entire canvas or any part thereof.

The video shows the process of pasting a surface with a cloth. You can do it yourself.

Fabric drapery

Drapery Walls
Drapery Walls

The most difficult way to design a room using fabric is drapery.A fabric is used for this, which in size exceeds the size of the room itself.
To carry out such work does not work out alone.

For this method of decoration you will need:

  • Canvas.
  • Wooden slats.
  • Nails
  • Self-tapping screws with decorative hats.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Level.
  • Ruler.
  • Pencil.
  • Roulette.
  • Saw or jigsaw.

Stages:

  • Initially, the height of the drapery is measured using a level. If the ceiling is already framed, then you can build on such work from it.
If in the near future it is planned to repair it and use a tension or suspension structure, then it is possible to level and set the drapery level by eye, but try as high as possible.
  • This level is drawn on the surface with a pencil using a ruler. After that, the canvas is taken and one of its edges is fixed at the top of the wall along the marked line with a small clove.
Then a wooden rail is taken and mounted on the surface on top of the fabric with screws and a screwdriver. The distance between such mounts should be no more than 20-30 cm.
The fabric must be tensioned before fastening. Such work is carried out around the perimeter of the room.
  • Then the whole process goes to the bottom. In principle, the technology of stretching the fabric is similar to the two previous methods, only the rail is mounted on top of the canvas.
The fabric is stretched and is also gradually fixed to the surface using a rail. Excess tissue residues are cut with a sharp knife.

Tip. So that with this method of decorating the room, the fabric below and above does not fray, you need to clearly measure its required length and width, adding 1-2 cm to the resulting dimensions. This excess is tucked and masked under the rail.

The photo shows the result of such finishing work.

Surface preparation work before fabric finishing

Instructions for preparing the surface for finishing work using fabric does not exist. But there are certain recommendations, observing which wall decoration will be of high quality.
So:

  • The first thing to do is to clean the surface of dust and various contaminants. It is best to vacuum the surface and wash it with a cleaning agent. This applies to stone walls.
  • If the surface is made of drywall, then washing it is not recommended. If there are visible impurities on it, then it is best to treat such a surface with plaster or putty.
In some cases, it is painted.

If on the surface on which the fabric will be stretched there is an outbreak of rust or other construction defects, then it is best to treat the surface with a special solution and paste over it with wallpaper.
