Work Rules
Everyone thinks how to putty the walls themselves before starting work. Unless of course this is done for the first time.
There is nothing complicated and anyone can do the work. The video in this article will fully show all the stages of the work and you can see the details from the photo.
Materials and tools that will be needed for work
Before starting work, you should make sure that you have at hand all the necessary tools that you may need when performing work. Their price is not high and it’s better to take everything and not save on it.
Tools:
- Roller - we will apply a primer to them;
- Half meter metal half;
- Several spatulas of various sizes (two models will definitely be needed - wide and narrow);
- Nozzle on a drill or construction mixer - they will quickly and efficiently mix the putty;
- Convenient bowl to breed dry mix.
Caution: Before choosing the type of dry mix - carefully read the recommendations on the packaging. Usually putty is used to smooth out minor differences (up to fifty millimeters). If the differences are greater, then carry out preliminary plastering of the ceiling surface.
To eliminate differences over 50 mm, putty “Rotband” is suitable. Putty "Concrete BX" is suitable for work in wet rooms, and "Concrete KR" or "Concrete LR" can be used in dry rooms, because they are made on an adhesive basis.
We prepare and clean the surface
In the case when the ceiling plates lie flat - you only need to remove the remains of whitewash, glue or wallpaper from the ceiling.
So:
- To remove wallpaper or whitewash - wet the surface of the ceiling with water - to do this easily by using a sponge. When a layer of wallpaper or whitewash is saturated with water, it can be removed with a spatula without difficulty.
Attention: It is better not to wet large surfaces at a time, because they dry quickly. Perform this task step by step, for example, select sections meter by meter and gradually moisten and clean them.
- To putty better laid on the ceiling - primer. The primer mixture must be applied to the ceiling surface in two layers. First, the first layer is applied parallel to the wall with the window, then the second layer is applied perpendicularly to it.
- The primer should be applied evenly, traces of a roller or brush, drips should not remain. Use the tips of the brush to touch the ceiling. The brush should be held at an angle of 60-70 degrees relative to the ceiling.
When working with a brush, rotate it around the axis - so it will wear out uniformly on all sides. A primer roller can achieve good results. It is advisable to choose a short-nap roller. When priming, do not press hard on the roller. - If strong steps and differences are visible on the ceiling, then before starting the putty work, you will first have to plaster it to remove the most visible irregularities. When everything is completely dry - prime.
Priority for puttying
Now let's figure out how putty walls according to the stages of work.
Knead the dry mix
A nozzle on a drill or a special mixer will allow you to better cope with this task. If you use the specified tool, you can get a homogeneous mass, which will be without lumps.
Add water to the dry mixture little by little. The result should be a mixture in density resembling sour cream.
Putty application on the surface
For all types of puttying, the puttying process is completely identical.
So:
- Scoop a little mixture with a small spatula, then distribute the mixture evenly on the surface of the wide spatula.
- After the mixture should be applied with a wide spatula to the ceiling. Try to get a thin and uniform layer.
- Remains of the mixture remain on the wide spatula - they should be removed with a narrow spatula back into the bowl.
- Until the entire surface of the ceiling is plastered with the first layer - continue to repeat this procedure.
- When the first layer is completely dry - you need to remove the bumps - they rise above the main layer. The skin or putty knife will remove the sag.
Caution: The state of the second layer may be affected by dust that remains after sanding. It is more reasonable to use a wide spatula to fix defects.
- Now how to putty the corners of the walls. In this case, an angle trowel is used. It has an even angle and allows it to withstand the correct when applying the layer.
- Now how to putty a hole in the wall, this is desired exactly as the plane is putty.
Attention: If you just want to putty one hole, then before applying the material it is better to moisten the wall. And if the hole is very small, this does not mean that the material did not begin to exfoliate nearby, gouge the hole more with a chisel and hammer.
Total number of layers
If this is an uneven ceiling, then there will be many layers. When applying each layer - try to level the surface horizontally - this can be done if more uneven areas are applied to uneven areas.
A subsequent coat can only be applied when the previous coat is completely dry.
Finishing layer
The finest of all layers should be the last:
- To prevent the mixture from drying out at the edges, the top coat should be applied quickly. Through the use of a wide spatula, a layer of putty should be applied and immediately remove all unnecessary - you can press the spatula to the ceiling surface.
- Hold the tool almost perpendicular to the surface you are machining. If the finish layer is applied correctly, then subsequent sanding of the surface can be avoided.
Final finish
Finishing sanding will not be necessary if wallpaper is to be glued to the ceiling (seeWallpaper decoration: choose the right one).
So:
- If you intend to paint the ceiling, then, by treating with a fine sandpaper, it is important to give it perfect smoothness.
- When the putty is dry - use a carrying lamp to highlight and see irregularities. A sander can also come in handy.
Subtleties of puttying for plasterboard walls
Key feature plasterboard puttying will be that it will not be necessary to level the surface. They will putty so that the ceiling is equally smooth everywhere.
So:
- First, align the seams of drywall sheets. The corners of the drywall sheets have an oblique cut - this makes it easier to align the joints.
Attention: If there is no such chamfer at the edges of drywall sheets, you will have to prepare the edges of the drywall yourself - at a 45-degree angle, you need to cut the chamfer using an office knife.
- Then fiberglass mesh paste over all joints and seams. Since the mesh is made on a self-adhesive basis, it is easy to stick.
- So that there is no dust, pre-prime the seams. With a narrow trowel, putty on the seam, then immediately smooth it with a wide trowel.
Caution: It is important to try to completely push the mixture into the seam with two movements, then straighten.
Cross on the cross, putty on the hats of the screws - this will make it possible to completely close the fastener cap with the mixture. When the joints are dry - they should be treated with sandpaper, primed with the entire ceiling, apply the last coat of putty.
Putty of walls for painting
When a significant part of the work is completed and the plane has become quite smooth - it's time to start painting. At this stage, many are preoccupied with an unpleasant problem.
When painting, pieces of putty often stick to the roller - they simply come off the ceiling and form defects on the ceiling. If you try to stick the putty back into place, it will be even worse.
How to deal with this problem:
- For the final treatment it is advisable to use a waterproof putty - it will not soak from the water that is in the paint, and will firmly adhere to the ceiling. If you have already bought ordinary putty, then use a water-repellent primer to dilute the putty mixture.
Caution: It is important to dilute the primer in water in advance, and not add it to the dry mix.
- The mixture turned out - periodically stir it with a mixer - this will help it not harden and will not allow lumps to form. The mixture needs to be used quickly, because after three hours it will no longer be possible to work with it.
- Before painting, you can simply cover the plane with a waterproof primer. This will help to avoid lagging of the putty layers from the surface.
- When you are painting, easily press the roller and do not drive the roller many times in the same place.
Now you know how to putty cracks on the wall and bring the plane to zero under the facing material. To apply the primer, the instructions must first be studied, give preference to deep penetration fluids.
She will provide the best connection. In this work, it is important not to rush. After all, this is the finish and it must be done efficiently.
