Wallpaper classification
According to the degree of moisture resistance, wallpapers are divided into three types. Moisture-resistant wallpaper, the surface of which can only be wiped with a damp cloth, without the use of detergents.
Washable wallpapers are resistant to household chemicals used to clean surfaces from contamination. And the third type is super washable, which are absolutely not afraid of water.
So:
- Each type of wallpaper has many other properties, which can be found on the icon printed on the label. The icons also indicate how to properly glue the wallpaper, join the drawing, remove them from the walls.
In the table we have, there are all kinds of designations corresponding to each type of wallpaper.
There are two main technologies for the production of wallpaper: not primed and primed:
- Simple non-primed wallpapers, in turn, are printed embossed, embossed and sculpted. Drawings in this case are applied directly to colored or white paper.
In relief versions, this is done with a thick, pasty paint, which creates a relief. - In the second case, the drawing is not applied to the paper itself, but to the soil layer. Primed wallpapers are more dense, so that the absolute smoothness of the walls when decal is not required.
Moreover, they themselves can hide small wall defects.
In the production, there are many options for decorating wallpapers: metallization, varnishing, silk-screen printing, creating relief, tapestries. The more complex the finish, the higher their price.
Especially if their surface is covered with a special protective layer, thanks to which the wallpaper can not only be washed, but also painted.
All varieties of wallpaper
In addition to the well-known paper and vinyl wallpapers, there are many other options. This is 3D and photo wallpaper, non-woven fabric, fiberglass and textile wallpapers, various film coatings, liquid wallpapers.
We will try to briefly tell you about their advantages and disadvantages, as well as how the decoration and design of the apartment is done with wallpaper of one kind or another.
Paper
There was a time when we did not even suspect the existence of other types of wallpaper. In Soviet times, only paper wallpapers were on sale.
Currently, a great variety of different wall coverings are on sale, but paper wallpapers do not give up their positions. This is the most budget finish option, which is why the most popular.
Actually, paper wallpaper has two drawbacks: they fade in the sun and are afraid of moisture.
So:
- They do not have special strength, so the service life of such a coating is no more than five years. But this is not their fault, but rather a virtue.
The same interior quickly bothers, and replacing cheap wallpapers that are easily glued and also easy to remove is the easiest.
- Due to the fact that no polymer raw materials are used in their production, paper wallpapers “breathe” and are the most environmentally friendly. They are recommended to be glued to the walls in the nursery and bedroom.
- And the variety of textures, patterns and colors of paper wallpaper is in no way inferior to the assortment of more expensive types. Therefore, you can also create a beautiful interior using paper wallpaper - moreover, it is easy to do it yourself.
- There are several types of paper wallpaper: structural, single layer, duplex and photo wallpaper. The names speak for themselves.
Single-layered wallpapers, otherwise called “simplex”, consist of a thin layer of paper, onto which a drawing is applied by printing. They require the most careful preparation of the walls and have the lowest density. - Duplex consists of two to three layers of paper, and has an embossed relief. Sometimes their surface is covered with a composition that protects the surface from burnout.
Duplex wallpapers are able to hide minor defects of the base surface, and therefore do not require perfect smoothness of the walls. - Structural wallpapers have even more layers, they are dense and durable, because they are made from a special grade of fibrous paper. Such wallpapers are intended for painting walls.
- This becomes possible after impregnation with a water-repellent solution. After painting, they do not lose their breathability and are able to withstand more than ten coatings with water-based paint.
- A special authority among the people is photo wallpaper. They represent a paper canvas on which landscapes and landscapes, images of animals, reproductions of paintings are photographed.
Wall mural can be designed for pasting the walls along the entire height. But there are also those who decorate the wall partially, like a panel.
Narrow photo wallpaper specially designed for interior door trim. In the manufacturing process, photo wallpaper is finished with a special water-repellent composition, which allows them to be used in moderately humid rooms.
For example, it can be a kitchen, a loggia, or a spacious bathroom in a private house.
Non-woven and vinyl wallpapers
Externally, these two types of wallpaper are very similar, but there is a slight difference in the technology of their production. Flizelin is made from cellulose fibers, with the addition of polyester and other components.
So:
- This wallpaper got its name from the German word Vlieseline, meaning non-woven material similar to paper. It was originally used in the clothing industry to shape collars and clothing stands.
- Flizelin is much stronger than paper and, besides, has the ability not to lose shape when wet. It is these qualities that served as the reason for the start of the production of wall decorative coatings based on non-woven.
- This type of wallpaper is also a natural material, but, unlike paper counterparts, is more durable. Therefore, non-woven can also be used in the decoration of living rooms, and we can’t even talk about their diverse assortment.
- It is this type of wallpaper that designers most often choose for their projects. Everyone can take their ideas into service.
Look at the photo above - at the head of the bed, on the wall there is a peculiar application of three types of non-woven wallpaper with bright and rich colors, but within the same color scheme. Home textiles are in harmony with them - the original bedroom interior has turned out.
- By the way, options for decorating a room with wallpaper with different patterns or shades are in fashion today. They are performed in different ways: each wall can be decorated with its own color.
The decoration of one wall also looks great with different wallpapers, the borders of which are closed with decorative moldings, a frieze, or borders of a suitable color. - The basis of vinyl wallpaper is also non-woven, on top of which a layer of polyvinyl chloride is applied, which gave them the name. These two-layer wallpapers can be washed and used for bathroom finishes.
- The use of vinyl wallpapers for kitchen wall decoration. It does not matter that in them the breathable layer of non-woven is covered with a polymer decorative layer.
Firstly, this wallpaper is hygienic, as it is washed even with warm water and soap. Secondly, they are often glued only from the middle of the wall. From below, the wall is faced with tiles, wood, or plastic.
- You can distinguish between vinyl and non-woven wallpapers by looking at the back. The non-woven backside has a relief repeating the pattern on the front side.
In vinyl wallpaper, the wrong side is smooth.
They differ in the way they are glued to the wall. Flizelin can not be lubricated with glue, it is applied only to the wall.
When working with a vinyl coating, they do the opposite - glue is applied to the back of the wallpaper.
Screenprinting and fabric wallpaper
Wallpaper made by the silk screen printing method, in fact, can be attributed to vinyl.
The basis of their production is a paper or non-woven fabric impregnated with polyvinyl chloride. On this their similarity ends.
So:
- Next, there are threads of natural or acetate silk or other artificial fibers that interspersed in vinyl impregnation. After that, the canvas is heated and stamped under high pressure.
The surface of the wallpaper becomes smooth, resembling silk. Hence their name went.
- Thanks to the interweaving of threads, silk-screen wallpapers get extra strength. Their surface can be either shiny or matte, and the performance properties only improve: silk wallpapers do not fade, are moisture resistant and durable.
- And of course, a huge variety of colors and patterns is produced. There are two-layer options that are quite suitable for a bathroom or kitchen.
Decorating the room with wallpaper requires a good decorative effect. It is silk wallpaper that can make its interior the most sophisticated. - Especially advantageous are such wallpapers in a room with artificial lighting and backlight. Flickering and glare, falling on the surface of the walls, create an indescribable play of light, making the room festive and elegant.
- Silk-screen wallpapers can not be pasted over the entire area of the walls, but partially, as a decor. The picture above shows just such an example.
There are a lot of plants in the room, so the wall covering with the corresponding pattern looks very harmonious. These options for wallpaper decoration of the room are not chosen randomly, they are carefully thought out so that glare on the walls does not ripple in the eyes. - The basis of textile wallpaper is also paper or non-woven. And the top layer is not made of fibers, like silk-screen wallpaper, but of fabric: linen, velor, cotton - any.
Fabric wallpapers look chic, they are quite resistant and durable. But, like any fabric, they quickly absorb odors and dust. Therefore, they can not be used in any rooms.
- Such wallpapers are not chosen at random, but only for the interior - the specialist’s instructions are simply necessary. He will tell you how to properly glue the wallpaper, because not every buyer understands what the icons on the label mean.
For example, the most expensive, velor wallpapers are very moody. If you do something wrong when pasting, you will incur losses. - Jacquard wallpapers, which are produced in a huge assortment, more than two hundred drawings and colors, are very popular. Very often they are used in decorating rooms in a classic style.
Indeed, in the Middle Ages it was fashionable to upholstery the walls of rooms with fabric.
- But felt wallpapers are washable, since their decorative layer is polypropylene or felt. They are very resistant, well cleaned with a vacuum cleaner, and are intended not only for decoration of residential, but also office premises.
- In creating original interiors, designers often use several types of fabric wallpaper. This is especially good when the room has a complex geometric shape, many piers, each of which can be individually decorated.
In the example we have given, this is clearly visible.
Fiberglass and 3D wallpaper
The raw material for the manufacture of fiberglass wallpaper is special glass, which at high temperatures is divided into fibers. Who cares how this happens, you can watch the video.
Glass fiber, like textile, is used to make yarn and weave canvas. Further application of this canvas is very diverse.
One of the areas of its application is the production of decorative wall coverings.
So:
- Since glass is a natural material, fiberglass wallpaper can be considered environmentally friendly. In addition, they are very durable, not afraid of high temperatures, and therefore are used even in medical institutions.
- Cullets can be used to decorate bathrooms, kitchens, corridors. Finishing the attic floor with fiberglass wallpaper is very practical.
It is often not very convenient to make repairs in this room, and the walls glued with fiberglass wallpaper can be repainted repeatedly. - In small rooms of a small-sized apartment, cullets are not used, as well as 3D Wallpaper. Their beautiful relief and volumetric effect is clearly visible at a distance, and in a small room they turn into ordinary wallpaper.
- On 3D wallpaper, as on photo wallpaper, any landscape, plant or animal can be depicted. This decor is perfect for the walls of spacious rooms of a country house.
They can be applied with fluorescent paint, due to which, after dark, the wallpaper shines spectacularly - the walls become unusually beautiful.
The main raw material for the manufacture of volumetric wallpaper is polyester. Thanks to this material, the coating gains strength, resistance to elevated temperatures, humidity.
As the main finishing material, 3D wallpaper does not make sense - the interior will be colorful and monotonous. Most often, they are used for additional wall decor, in the form of trellises or framed paintings.
