Remove the putty
How to level the walls with putty (seeAligning the walls with putty in accordance with all the rules) you already know, but sometimes it is necessary to redo something and the putty in this case must be removed. Everything can be done with your own hands and then the price of the work will not cost anything. Below will be instructions.
Before you begin any finishing work, you need to get rid of the previous coating:
- All top trim layers are removed.
- Then the putty is removed.
The process of removing old material is not easy. It is worth approaching it thoroughly. It is carried out in several stages.
First, the question is whether there is a need to remove putty:
- The wall is being inspected. With a flat surface and a minimum of small defects, cracks, it is easier to leave putty. Damaged places can simply be cleaned, primed and puttyed. Then you do not have to deal with the entire wall.
- This is a good option if the previous repair was done efficiently and not very long ago. It happens that the coating is dense and lies flat. But there are doubts whether it is reasonable to leave the material.
- In such cases, it is better to tap the surface. You can use the handle of the spatula. If the sound is dull, then you have to clean the putty. And when the wall is old, swollen in places, one can’t do without removing the previous layer.
What is needed
Everything necessary for this procedure is easier to prepare in advance.
You will need:
- Plastic film or newspaper;
- Atomizer;
- A bucket or container under the solution;
- A large piece of fabric, a roller or sponge is suitable;
- Spatula, chisel, hammer;
- Grinder, sandpaper, punch;
- Ladder;
- Respirator, gloves and goggles.
Before work, the room also needs to be prepared. After all, the work will be dusty and then it will take a long time to clean up. Furniture can be removed from the room or sheathed with polyethylene.
And seal the space between the walls and the door with paper tape. The floor is covered with newspapers or film. It’s better to hang a wet sheet on the door.
And do not forget about protection. This is where gloves, goggles and a respirator come in handy. Now you can get to work.
Conventional method
This method is the most accessible and there is no need to have practical skills.
So:
- The surface is wetted from a spray bottle.
- Five minutes later, you can take on a spatula. Some begin to remove the coating without wetting if it leaves well in some places. But the whole wall cannot be treated like that. Therefore, it is necessary to wet it.
Attention: It happens that wet material does not lend itself. A starch solution will help here. He is preparing simply.
In a liter of water add 2 tbsp. l starch. All this is well mixed and charged into the atomizer. The mixture is applied to the surface. After 20 minutes, when it is absorbed into the putty, you can again remove the material.
- To save time and effort, it is best to determine the thickness of the finish. If the coating is put in one or two layers with a thickness of 2-3 mm, you can do with a spray gun. But when the finish is dense 6 mm thick, it makes no sense to use a spray gun. It is easier to apply the starch mixture with a cloth, sponge or roller.
Radical method
With a thick layer of putty, when the starch does not help, tools are used:
- The chisel is applied to the wall at an angle and the pieces of material are chipped off one by one with a hammer.
Caution: It is better to start with those areas where the putty does not hold well.
- It happens that such a method is also useless. A grinder and a punch will help here.
- A shovel is inserted into the perforator cartridge, and they simply destroy the finish.
- An alternative to a rotary hammer is a grinder. Its circle is applied parallel to the wall and cut off the coating. Before this, a notch is made on the surface.
Of course, after such events, cleaning will not do. But they are fast and faithful.
When the wall is cleaned of old material, it is cleaned with coarse sandpaper. Dirt and dust from the surface are simply wiped off with a wet cloth.
Now she is ready for a new treatment. It can be primed, puttyed. And apply decorative finishing materials.
Removing putty from the ceiling
Unnecessary material is removed from the ceiling almost the same as from the walls.
You can use the “soft” method:
- Treat the surface with starch mixture and clean off the layer with a spatula. Or cut it with a grinder. The opinions of builders on this issue differ.
Someone advocates a “starchy” method, while others consider the use of a grinder to be the most reliable. It is important to choose a method that is suitable for a particular coating. - So, you need to start with a thorough inspection of the ceiling and tapping. Sometimes already at this stage the old layer begins to fall off.
Then of course starch and a spatula are the best option. If the coating is dense, holds well, then they take the grinder in their hands. The option is fast and efficient. It is especially important not to forget about protection: glasses and a respirator. - Some do not want to remove the old filler to the end. Of course, this is everyone’s choice of how to make repairs. But a quality finish will not work without a foundation.
In order for the paint to hold firmly and lay flat, and the wallpaper was smooth and beautiful, you need to prepare this base. And it is best to clean the surface of all unnecessary materials. And then apply new ones.
