Liquid wallpaper and drawings: application technology
The controversy surrounding liquid wallpaper does not subside from the very moment of their appearance on the domestic market. Some argue that this is a low-quality type of finish, others that liquid wallpaper is beautiful, original and stylish. In this article, we will try not only to understand all the advantages of this material, but also talk about how to make a drawing of liquid wallpaper.
The content of the article
What is liquid wallpaper
In fact, it is impossible to call this cover in full measure, since they differ in the method of application. That is, if simple wallpapers are sold in rolls and simply glued to the wall, then liquid wallpapers are produced in the form of a dry monophonic mixture, which is simply diluted with water and then put with a spatula on the surface.
To prepare the mixture, the powder needs to be poured into a container, then pour everything with warm water and mix thoroughly. After that, the wallpaper should be infused for 10-15 minutes and can be applied.
Important! The instruction for applying liquid wallpaper says that you can mix the mixture only by hand, and in no case with a rough tool. You should not neglect this rule, since any hard tool can damage the fibers, and the coating will turn out to be torn and inhomogeneous.
Types and differences
Well, if everything is more or less clear with the preparation of the mixture, then it is simply necessary to understand the types of liquid wallpapers, especially if you plan to create drawings from liquid wallpapers, such as, for example, shown in the photo at the beginning of the article.
So, liquid wallpaper can be of the following types:
- Paper or otherwise - cellulose. The most common type of wallpaper that has all the positive characteristics of natural paper, but at the same time combines all the flaws, such as, for example, fear of moisture and the ability to absorb extraneous odors.
- Cotton This is the most unstable type of wallpaper, as evidenced by the price of them. Cotton is easily damaged and has a short life.
- Silk. One of the most expensive and practical types. Silk fibers adhere tightly to the wall surface and have increased resistance to all types of impacts, whether it is room humidity or mechanical stresses.
- Combined. Wallpaper containing cellulose fibers and silk. These wallpapers have the most pronounced texture pattern.
- Wallpaper with stone chips. The most stable coating with a heavy weight and a characteristic pattern of stone.
But not depending on what type of liquid wallpaper is chosen, they all have almost the same sets of positive and negative qualities, and this should be discussed in more detail.
Advantages
- Full environmental friendliness of the material, since liquid wallpaper does not contain any chemical additives or additives.
- Liquid wallpaper does not shrink, and remain intact even with the natural deformation of the walls.
- You can choose and create a picture for liquid wallpaper absolutely anyone, and there is no need to choose from what is available in the store.
- In case of damage to the coating, it is not necessary to completely re-glue the entire wall, as is the case with rolled wallpaper. It is enough just to soak the damaged area with water, and apply a new coating on it, and as a result of this repair there will not be the slightest trace.
- The dense and embossed structure of the wallpaper is able to hide the small imperfections of the walls.
disadvantages
- Regardless of the type of wallpaper chosen, they are all very sensitive to moisture.
- Paper or cotton options can fade in the sun and lose their original shade.
- Liquid wallpaper well absorbs odors and subsequently cannot be removed, therefore, such material is not recommended for use in the kitchen.
Interesting! Sometimes, in order to improve the quality characteristics of liquid wallpaper, a layer of varnish is applied on top of them, which protects the coating from moisture and odors.
Create a drawing
From the very beginning, it should be noted that such a thing as a liquid wallpaper with a picture simply does not exist. Any ornament is done with your own hands, and for this you can use not only various colors, but also combine textures.
Drawings for liquid wallpaper can be made in two techniques:
- Screen printing.
- Self-combining.
Both techniques are very different from each other in the method of application, but not depending on which one is preferred, you should always start with the preparation of the surface.
As mentioned above, liquid wallpaper can hide small flaws on the walls, but cleanliness needs special attention. First of all, all the remnants of the old finish are removed from the walls, after which a layer of soil or impregnation of deep penetration is needed (see Primer for liquid wallpaper - why is it needed) And only after the soil has dried it is possible to proceed to applying wallpaper and drawing.
Screen technology
This method is considered the simplest and fastest, liquid wallpaper and drawing in two stages. First, the primary coating of the wallpaper itself is applied, and after it dries, a stencil is attached in the required places using masking tape.
The stencil itself can be made independently or bought ready-made in any hardware store. The main thing is in no case to use a simple, plastic adhesive tape, as it will simply remove the layer of wallpaper from the wall, and there will be unpleasant stains, which also have to be repaired.
Important! Before sticking the stencil and applying a picture into it, the lower layer of wallpaper should dry completely, it can take up to several days, depending on the temperature and humidity in the room.
After the drawing is applied to the stencil, it needs to be allowed to dry for several hours, after which you can peel off the adhesive tape and remove the stencil. The drawing is ready and you can proceed to the next section or covering the entire wall with varnish.
A more detailed acquaintance with the technique of applying the pattern on the stencil, you can watch the video presented in this article.
Author's drawings
Unlike the stencil application technique, this method is more complex and time-consuming, moreover, depending on the number of colors used in the composition, it can take a very long time, since each type of wallpaper needs to dry well before moving on to the next one.
The whole process of creating a picture can be divided into several stages:
- The wall is prepared for applying liquid wallpaper and evened if possible (see Aligning the walls with putty in accordance with all the rules), so that the figure does not subsequently have strong differences.
- With a pencil or marker, the outline of the future drawing is applied to the wall, and each section is marked with the color that will need to be closed.
- Wallpaper of the color that prevails in the drawing is divorced, and applied with a spatula or transparent trowel, trying to observe the boundaries of the contour to the maximum.
- Now you can close other areas, but only those that do not touch the main one.
- If in some places it was not possible to observe the contour, then the surplus is simply neatly cleaned with a damp cloth.
- Now the wallpaper should completely dry and you can switch to other colors.
- When the drawing is ready and completely dry, it remains to fill the background.
We hope that we fully answered the question of which liquid wallpaper to choose and how to make a drawing with their help. Well, then, a matter of technology and complete freedom of imagination. And if we talk about the individuality of the interior, then hardly any other material is able to give the house such warmth and coziness, and at the same time make it unique.
