Marble chips for walls - beauty and durability
Decorative plaster of marble chips has not only an attractive appearance, but also quite tangible operational advantages.
Marble chips for walls are widely used in the design of facades and rooms inside the building. After which even difficult climatic conditions will not affect their strength. The article describes the types of material, gives some tips on using the composition.

Material Features
Marble plaster is an artificial mixture for applying it on the surface of any materials:
- Concrete.
- Reinforced concrete base.
- Chipboard.
- Fiberboard.
- Drywall.
- Plastered and other surfaces.
Marble chips are a mixture of natural ground marble and a dispersion of water-based acrylic polymer. In addition, the solution may contain special additives, solvents that increase water-repellent and antiseptic characteristics.
Marble wall is different:
- Attractive appearance of the plastered surface, as seen in the photo.
- The ability to mask small wall defects, without preparatory measures.
- Durability, high strength walls, practicality.
- Resistant to many chemicals.
- It retains its original color after prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light.
- Flexibility, impact resistance, elasticity, reliability.
- A huge selection of colors, textures.
- Environmental friendliness, fire resistance, ease of application.
- Excellent breathability, protection against mold and mildew.
- The ability to wash surfaces.
- Long service life.
- Vapor permeability. Compliance with the finishing technology contributes to the normalization of the microclimate in the room.
- Frost resistance. Low water absorption allows the polymerized coating to withstand a large number of freeze-freeze cycles.
- Manufacturability of the coating. Instructions for applying plaster are quite simple and affordable.
Tip: All the advantages of the material can be fully realized only on the condition of high-quality surface preparation.
- Wide palette. Marble granules can be painted, which allows the color scheme not to be limited to natural shades.
To implement the plan, it is enough to choose the right size of the fraction of marble grains, the color scheme, so that the house or office becomes cozy and beautiful.
Different manufacturers of these products include the same components:
- marble chips;
- fine dust;
- water emulsion;
- all kinds of additives;
- solvents.
All these components form a single plastic mixture, easily applied to the walls.
To give the walls a different texture and color, crumbs can be included in the decorative coating:
- malachite;
- Knix
- quartz;
- other natural stones.
The peculiarity of marble chips is the presence of roughness, this increases its adhesion to polymers and improves the decoration of walls with marble.
Difference criteria
Marble chips plaster has several components.
Their features are presented in the table:
Criteria | Material Features |
Type of solvent. | It is made on the basis of an organic solvent and water. |
Type of filler. | The filler is most often marble granules, sometimes quartz or granite chips are added to them. There are plasters with a quartz filler. |
A method of coloring crumbs. | To create an elegant and decorative look of the wall, stone chips are selected from granules of different colors. A wide range of colors perfectly complements any interior. |
The size of the granules. | The size of the granules determines the group of marble chips, which can be:

Decorative marble plaster can be made with your own hands, so that it matches the selected color and has the desired characteristics.
The type of marble plaster depends on the composition of the components in it.
The table shows the type of material and the proportions of the elements in it:
Material | Components in parts
Cement grade 400 | Slaked lime | Marble flour | Mica | Marble chips | Paint or pigment, in%
White marble | 1 | 0,2 | 0,1 | 0,1 | 3 | – |
Yellow marble | 1 | 0,15 | 0,05 | 0,1 | 3 | Ocher 3-5 |
Gray granite | 1 | 0,1 | – | 0,1 | 3 | peroxide |
Red marble | 1 | 0,1 | – | 0,1 | 3 | Meerk iron 5 - 10 |
Labrodarite | 1 | – | – | 0,1 | 3 | Manganese Peroxide 6 - 8 |
Below are photos of surfaces from different types of marble chips.
Before you make a marbled wall, you need to purchase the right amount of material.
To do this, determine the size of the fraction of marble chips, and the proposed table will help to perform the calculations:
The size of the crumb fraction, mm | Consumption, kg per m² |
Over 3 | Up to 8 |
Until 3 | 4 – 5 |
Up to 2 | 2 – 3 |
0,5 – 1 | 1 – 2,5 |
Surface preparation
To mount the marble to the wall as strong as possible, the bonding base must have the following characteristics:
- Humidity up to 10%.
- The absence of delamination, cracks and other defects on the surface.
- Flat terrain. In this case, smoothing of differences is allowed up to five millimeters per square meter.
To ensure this, it is necessary to perform such preparatory work as:
- Cleansing the walls of dirt.
- Removing the old finish.
- Dismantling loose sections of material.
- Stitching and priming all cracks.
- Preliminary repair of surfaces.
- Filling holes and cracks with cement or gypsum mortar.
- Application of a primer on the base of a marbled wall.
- Plaster wall alignmentto ensure uniformity of the material.
- High-quality drying of the walls.
- Processing of the plastered plane with a covering primer. The finish price will increase slightly, but the guarantee of reliable fixation of the decorative layer on the wall increases.
- If it is necessary to finish the metal surface, it is sanded, cleaned from corrosion and coated with an alkyd compound.
Tip: The color of the alkyd mortar should be selected according to the appropriate shade of the selected plaster.
Application of marble chips
Coating Procedure:
- Dry material is placed in a container.
- It is poured with a volume of pure water, which is indicated in the instructions and thoroughly mixed.
- The resulting homogeneous mass settles for about 10 minutes and stirring is repeated.
- The solution is applied with a trowel, on which the plaster is applied in small portions with a trowel.
- Wall decoration is carried out by moving from bottom to top.
Tip: When working, the steel trowel should be thoroughly washed every two approaches to the wall, removing the adhered parts of the mineral filler from the tool.
- The optimal size of the applied layer should be 1.5 - 2 diameters of marble chips. When applying a thicker layer, adhesion may become insufficient, which will lead to a gradual loss of filler.
Tip: When processing it is necessary to ensure that there are no clean places on the surface.
- Typically, the binder begins to polymerize after about 30 minutes.Therefore, wiping and aligning defects on the wall should be no later than this time, after application to the surface.
- Grouting is done with a metal plaster grater.
- It is necessary to smooth the layers of marble without unnecessary efforts so that the granules of marble do not fall out of the bonding layer.
- Walls are dried at a positive temperature. Duration of drying up to two days, which depends on the composition of the material.
Surface care
A big plus of the material is its durability. Properly applied coating can last approximately 25 years.
At the same time, it is not required to take care of the walls to use any special devices. They are washed with ordinary wet rags indoors, and facades, if necessary, with a stream of ordinary water from a hose.
Tip: When using a machine wash, the pressure should not be too strong.
With prolonged use of the coating, the color begins to lose its brightness. To update the surface of the walls, they can be painted using the same coating tone, or take the exact opposite color.
If defects are found on the walls, they can be partially or completely restored.
Based on all of the above, we can conclude that the material can be attributed to the leader of coatings for wall decoration. Its versatility allows it to be used for almost any type of surface that is not afraid of any type of precipitation. At the same time, you can make walls with a pattern, marble to decorate the room and the facade of the building to your liking.
