First you need to prepare everything. Tools that will be needed in the process. The materials we will use. And of course, the piece of furniture itself. Do not forget about precautions.

You need to work in a well-ventilated area, make sure that there are no small insects, flies nearby. If such a midge adheres to a just painted surface, you will have to redo everything.

Be sure to protect the eyes and nasopharynx from dust and the smell of paint. You also need to take care of clothes that you don’t mind stain, and gloves.

  • We will wash the piece of furniture with a detergent diluted in warm water.
  • We disassemble the product into parts. Handles, drawers, doors.
  • After complete drying, we clean the surface with fine-grained emery paper.
  • Apply a coat of acrylic primer. If there are deep cracks and chips, putty.
  • We also need a primer coat to match the color of the paint. After drying, we clean it with sandpaper.
  • We clean the surface of dust with a soft dry brush or vacuum cleaner.
  • Masking tape or film closes the plane that will not be painted.
  • Apply the first coat of paint and wait for it to dry completely. Then paint the next layer.
  • After all layers of paint have dried, you can apply acrylic varnish.
  • We remove protective equipment from the painted product and leave it for a day.
  • DIY furniture facades are painted in the same step-by-step manner as the base of the product.

Advice! Do not use textile wet rags to clean the dust after cleaning, as the dust particles will clog into the pores and cracks of the surface.

Polished furniture

Painting polished furniture with your own hands is just as simple as painting wood. The only difference is the removal of old polish or varnish.

There are several ways to do this:

  • Chemical - the varnish is removed using special chemical agents. They are simply applied to the surface to be cleaned, we wait for some time and with the help of a spatula we remove the old coating. We rinse with water and prepare the product for painting. Keep in mind that the price of such funds is not very small.
  • Mechanical - The old coating is removed manually using cycles or sandpaper. This process is more affordable financially, but longer and more time consuming. The process will proceed faster if there is a grinding machine.
  • Thermal - A building hair dryer or gas burner is used. We work with both hands, with one we hold the hair dryer and heat the surface, with the second we scrape off the exfoliating varnish. This method is not suitable for any surfaces.

Having cleaned the piece of furniture from the old coating, we prepare it for painting.

Important! With any of the methods for cleaning old varnish, do not forget about precautions. In the chemical, we protect the skin and mucous surfaces; with mechanical - safety glasses are required; in thermal - the danger of ignition must be eliminated.

We paint antique furniture

If a country-style interior or Provence is planned, then the furniture needs to be decoratively aged. Painting antique furniture with your own hands is very simple and will bring incredible pleasure at the end of the work.

Furniture aging is done after the main painting or without it. It is best to take chalk paints that are used for home creativity. Also matte water-based paints are suitable.

We apply paint with wide strokes, trying not to make smudges. We are waiting for the first layer to dry, we check whether it is necessary to go with fine sandpaper to smooth the surface and apply the next layer.

Next, we age the product:

  • If we want the wood pattern to peep through the paint, one layer will be enough.
  • The effect that the furniture will make old is done with fine-grained sandpaper. It is necessary to rub it with places where furniture is most often washed. For example, around pens and in corners.
  • If you want the effect of penetration of old paint through a new one, apply paint to a dry brush, slightly rub with a rag and paint on top of the main color with a thin layer.
  • It is possible with the help of dark wax in places of frequent use of furniture to make the effect of temporary attrition or pollution.
  • The antiquity of wooden furniture will help create dark lacquer and clear wax.
  • You can create the appearance of multiple coloring of furniture, for this we apply several layers of paint, applying them in different directions.

All these methods can be used both individually and collectively. It depends on desire and imagination.

So:

  • When the piece of furniture dries, its surface must be protected. You can do this with furniture wax.. It can be either transparent or dark.
  • Dark wax applied to the entire surface of the furniture will make the shade of the paint darker. And applying it in certain places, we get an aging effect.
  • Apply a transparent wax with a foam sponge and rub over the entire surface of the product. The wax dries in about twenty minutes.
  • Furniture items such as a table should also be coated with matt varnish.. Such things are used more often, therefore their protection should be stronger.

In the video in this article, you can see how to age furniture.
