How is a brick wall painted
Painting brick walls is not so simple. Here it is necessary to choose the right dye and then apply it in a quality manner.
All work is completely done with your own hands, but only by observing the necessary technology. Below is an instruction for its correct implementation.

Completing of the work
Before you start purchasing materials and completing work, you should watch the video in this article and photo. After all, you must first understand what should be the end result. Indeed, in this matter there is a significant difference, it is to paint a brick wall on the balcony and a completely different option for painting the facade. There are two different approaches.
Tools and materials
Before brick wall painting care must be taken to prepare the required work tools and materials.
From what condition the surface of the wall arrives to be painted, a number of tools may be required:
- Sponge;
- Cement. For this work, the M300 is perfect;
- Protective glasses;
- Sandpaper. It must be taken with different grain sizes. If you have to handle a large plane, then for this it is better to purchase a grinding machine;
- Special paint for a brick wall;
- Scraper;
- Atomizer (see We select a spray gun for painting);
- Latex gloves.
In its structure, brick is a rather rough material, and when processing walls made of bricks, tools quickly become unusable. To reduce tool wear costs, use high-quality and durable brush rollers and brushes.
Help in choosing a paint
Brick masonry has a rough surface in its structure, the heterogeneity in the masonry is explained by the presence of cement joints between the bricks. Painting such a surface is very difficult, for this reason a special paint for facades was developed.
- When choosing and acquiring facade paint, you should choose not ordinary paint for facades, but paint for painting brickwork (see Brick paint: how to choose and use) There are separately developed paints for painting both old and new brick walls, and having various features in their content.
- A large number of specialized paints designed for painting brick surfaces. Such paints have improved elasticity, the ability to seep deep into the painted surface, they also align and hide the cracks formed.
- The optimal solution when painting the outer masonry is the use of elastomeric paint. Using this paint, you can protect the treated wall from moisture and the effects of seasonal temperature extremes. Plus, this paint can easily repair cracks in the masonry. When working with paint, you should prepare yourself for the fact that you will have to invest a lot of effort. The elastomeric paint has a thicker formula than ordinary facade paint, especially since the layer must be three times thicker when applied. The cost of paint is quite high.
- For conventional interior painting, the choice of colors is significantly wide. It is permissible to paint indoor walls with paints on a variety of basic substances. If paint is chosen for painting the bathroom (see What and how to paint in the bathroom wall) or toilet, you should choose a paint that is resistant to alkaline conditions and has water-repellent qualities.For painting of heating surfaces it is worth using heat-resistant paint.
- In addition to paint for the facade, when painting brickwork from brick, you can also use latex or acrylate paint. The above coloring agents are resistant to sunlight, and for a long time retain their original appearance. You can apply transparent acrylic varnish by applying it in several layers, on the masonry which is made with extreme accuracy, the wall receives a unique shade, while maintaining its color.
- Although, the best solution can still be considered the use of natural latex paint. This paint takes a leading place among similar paints. It has increased durability, has excellent water-repellent properties, perfectly closes small cracks. Also, the advantages include ease of application to the surface.
Attention: When choosing a paint, you should select a color that will match the characteristics of the interior and be combined in color with other buildings and satisfy personal tastes.
Repair work
The processes carried out by painting surfaces made of bricks contain three main points:
- First of all, preparing a brick wall for painting, the strength and durability of the coating will depend on this;
- Primer wall (see Primer for walls for painting - types and tasks);
- Painting.
Attention: The durability, service life and quality of the made painting depend on how much the brickwork is correctly prepared.
If the masonry preparation works are not performed satisfactorily, the painted surface will not be of high quality. Even the best paint will not hide defects, and pretty soon there will be a loss of an attractive appearance.
Crack repair and plaque removal
If the wall is well prepared and cleaned, then the quality of the painted surface will be unsurpassed. In the beginning, it is necessary to carry out work on preparing the wall with a brush with bristles made of fairly elastic metal wire.
- In the case where traces of the previous coating remained on the wall, it must be removed from the surface under the action of a conventional solvent. If traces of the fungus, mold and lime spots are found, this indicates that this surface is subject to active moisture, which can lead to premature wall destruction.
- Lime deposits and stains are destroyed with specially designed solutions. You need to work with them using personal protective equipment. In the beginning, with the help of a brush made of metal wire, the affected areas should be cleaned. In the case when salt protrusion appears on the wall surface, it is removed with the help of the same metal brush and water, then you should wait a while and repeat the procedure if the salt has appeared again.
- Closely examine the surface of the wall made of brick for the presence of bumps and cracks. Minor chips and cracks on the wall surface are repaired with help latex paint, which is made specifically for brick walls. These paints are much more effective than alkyd paints and are better suited for brick wall painting. They are quite viscous and easily breathe.
- Large cracks and seams must be cleaned of crushed mortar, dust and dirt, and repaired with a new mortar. Wash with a washcloth and a stiff brush, and use a putty to level the plane. Allow the surface of the wall to dry completely for approximately fourteen days. If the paint is applied to a wall that has not yet dried, then after a certain period of time traces of fungus and mold will appear on it.
Attention: If you eat small cracks, they must be increased with a chisel and then repaired with a solution. It is necessary that the solution penetrates into the crack.
Primer wall
There is an assumption that the surface of the wall should not be primed before painting. This is not a true belief. Painting a brick wall on the ground will last much longer.
Caution: The primer coating contributes to better adhesion of the applied paint to the surface to be painted, and provides improved water repellent ability. Reduced paint consumption increases the life of the coating. In addition to all this, the antiseptic additives that are contained in the primer create a barrier to the appearance of fungus and mold.
- During the preparation of the brick wall, the painting process should use a primer based on acrylic and latex. The primer should be applied in two or three layers, allowing the previous layer to dry.
- The thickness of the applied layer should not exceed two millimeters. In case of residual expression of greasy stains, another 2-3 coat of primer should be applied.
- For work, it is better to use a spray gun. Then the coating will be uniform. The primer is best acquired deep penetration.
Brick wall painting
After the preparation of the surface and its complete drying, the time has come for its painting:
- With a two-centimeter pile roller or a brush with a hard pile, you can apply paint to a wall indoors. It is more convenient to paint the outside of the wall with a spray gun.
Attention: Both inside and outside, application of paint is recommended in two three layers. The start of staining should start from any angle on the top of the surface.
- The initial layer of paint serves as a primer, and the next layers are applied after the drying of the previous one, this ensures evenness of the layers and the absence of deformation of the paint.
- At the beginning of planning for painting a completely new wall, it is necessary to maintain a period of at least 12 months from the date of its construction. If this is not done, then defects may occur over time.
- Painting of facade walls should be done in the summer, when the ambient air warms up to a temperature not exceeding 25 degrees. If you do not adhere to this rule, the paint will leave stains and go to bed not in an even layer.
- During the painting of walls inside the living room, all interfering furniture should be removed or put in the center of the room with a film.
- If we take into account the cost of labor, then painting is much easier to work than carrying out cladding or work related to plastering. Caring for such a wall also does not require special attention, it suffices to wash the surface once a year with soapy water.
- If the place is partially damaged, then do not paint the entire wall, it is enough to paint on the damaged surface. After a certain period of time, the area that has undergone cosmetic updating will merge in color with the rest of the wall array.
We paint a brick wall slowly and using technology. Only then will the coating last for a long time. The price of the coating is not expensive, but requires careful preparation for application.
