How to prepare a regular cabinet for painting
Is it possible to repaint a sliding wardrobe, if they lose their presentable appearance during operation, if it has become shabby and peeling? An unambiguous answer is possible, and sometimes better. This is due to the fact that old furniture has, in comparison with modern, better quality and durability.
In preparation for painting the old cabinet, the work execution instructions should be clearly observed, consisting in the following:
- All removable parts, such as:
- Doors
- loops;
- pens.
- Shelves are pulled out.
- The frame should be as empty as possible.
- The place of work is selected. It can be:
- balcony;
- a better street.
Preparation of the frame for painting includes:
- Removing the old coating structure from all partswhich may be:
- wax;
- colorless varnish (see How to remove varnish from a tree: ways of doing work);
- all kinds of paints.
This is necessary to evenly distribute the new coating.
- The surface is cleaned to the very wood. In this case, you need to use sandpaper, and all movements must be carried out with sweeping, without much zeal.
Tip: When removing the old coating, make sure that a thin layer of existing veneer is not removed with a layer of varnish.
- All dust after sandpaper is swept away with a brush.
Tip: Do not sweep the dust off the cabinet with a rag, it clogs the dust particles back into the wood.
- Fine-grained sandpaper handles all hard-to-reach spotsand then the surface is again wrapped with a brush.
- After the preparatory work, high-quality cleaning of the premises is carried out.to prevent dust and debris from entering the surface during painting and to prevent the coating from forming defects on it.
What tools and materials will be required to carry out the work
For work you will need:
- Brush The roller can also replace it, but in practice, working with a brush is much more convenient. Painting will become more accurate, and besides, you can paint all the small elements. At the same time, tools should be chosen of good quality, designed to perform work with acrylic types of paints.
Tip: When choosing a brush or roller, you should pay attention to their cost. Their low price may indicate poor quality of the product, which can simply spoil the coating: due to the poor quality of the brush, a pile will climb from it and then remain on the painted surface.
- Sandpaper of different grit.
- Flat shaped brush.
- Clean rags.
- Hammer.
- Small carnations.
- Electric drill.
From the materials you will need:
- Paint for the cabinet. In this case, preference must be given to acrylic types. Their advantages:
- practically have no smell;
- perfectly washed;
- mix well with water, which is important enough to obtain the desired shade of color of the painted cabinet.Rinsing off the acrylic paint with water allows you to remove the allowed flaws from the painted surface. When dried, the water from the acrylic paint will evaporate, and the coating will gradually become more durable.
Tip: In the process of drying the paint, be careful not to damage the not yet solid surface.
It is not necessary to use paint of the same color when restoring the product. In this case, you can combine pastel colors with bright shades. To choose the right colors and their combination, you should try the paint on the surface of the cabinet, and then just wash off the samples. If the desired color of the paint could not be obtained, you can take the acrylic material in white and the colors of the desired color.
- Primer (see Primer for wood and the rules for its selection). The most suitable composition on an acrylic basis. In this case, the primer components will perfectly interact with the selected acrylic coating.
Processing the cabinet with an acrylic primer is quite simple if you follow the instructions for its use. It is important to observe the required period of drying of the soil. Before applying paint to a cabinet or chest of drawers, the primer must be completely dry.
The furniture must be primed with a roller, applying a relatively thin layer of it. After which the products are left alone until completely dry.
Cabinet painting technology
After preparing all the materials and tools, determining the place for work, so that it is well ventilated, without dust, you can begin painting the cabinet.
- When staining the cabinet with paint that has a lighter shade, the paint for the first layer should be selected not thick or dried. If it thickens, you will need to dilute the composition with clean water.
- A light shade in several layers is applied to the surface of the product, which depends on the desired effect on the surface. With a single layer you can get a surface in Provence style, with a clearly defined wood pattern. To create a denser layer, you will need to apply several more layers.
Tip: With a brush, apply strokes on each layer in one direction.
- After the light layers of paint have dried, a coating of a darker tone is applied. Before this, you must first glue with masking tape the surfaces that are not to be painted. The paint is applied in the same way as a light shade.
- After the cabinet has completely dried, varnish is applied to the surface to obtain a matte or glossy effect to protect the created coating. Lacquer blotting is applied with a foam sponge. As a result, the product will get the appearance, as in the photo.
- After drying the varnish, all removable parts of the cabinet are assembled together.
The nuances of doing work at home
Features of painting the product at home are:
- When deciding to paint the cabinet without preliminary grinding, a primer layer should be applied to the surface before painting to ensure more reliable adhesion of the paint to a smooth surface.
- The air temperature during painting should not be less (+ 16 ° C).
- To avoid sagging, it is desirable to arrange the painted surface horizontally. When painting a vertical plane, brush movements should be from top to bottom.
- Drawing decorative drawings is carried out using a stencil.
- Using aerosol paints, special tips need to adjust the amount of spray coating and its uniform distribution of the surface to be painted.
