  • Natural materials are used for its manufacture.
  • Furniture items are more reliable and durable.

Cabinets can be made of different materials:

  • Made of wood.
  • From chipboard. Such material absorbs less moisture than wood. Therefore, it will take longer for the chipboard to dry, it is much easier to create the necessary color on it, a smaller primer layer is used, compared to wooden products.

  • Delete all removable items:
  1. pens;

  • Sponge or rag.

Next, the surfaces for painting are prepared:

  • With a sponge or rag, all dust and dirt is removed from the cabinet.
  • Remains the previous paint and varnish with sandpaper (see How to remove varnish from a tree: ways of doing work) The process is performed in circular, sweeping movements.
  • Coarse sandpaper is used first.
  • The cabinet is completely cleaned of any irregularities, residues of varnish and paint. This will allow the new coating to lie on the surface evenly and smoothly.

Tip: When rubbing the surface, make sure that the veneer layer is not erased. Otherwise, you will need to additionally wipe the surface from the appearance of bumps and holes.

  • After processing the cabinet with coarse sandpaper, the planes are dusted off with a flat brush.

Tip: Do not clean the cabinet or chest of drawers from dust with a rag. Thus, it will not be possible to get rid of it completely, but it is possible to hammer the remaining dust into the surface itself, which will further affect the quality of the cabinet painting.

  • The places not processed with coarse-grained sandpaper are processed with paper with small grains.
  • The cabinet is brushed again to remove dust.
  • The room in which the work is performed is carefully cleaned and cleaned of dust. A dusty room will degrade the quality of the paint.

What paint is used for the cabinet

Of all types of paint, it is better to give preference to acrylic paints.

Its advantages:

  • Bright color.
  • It has almost no smell.
  • It is quite simply diluted with water to obtain the desired color.
  • Such paint is easily washed off, which allows you to correct errors when coating.
  • Water evaporates after the paint dries, and the coating becomes more durable.

Painting the cabinet in one color is optional.

In this case, you can experiment, for example, use two colors:

  • Beige for the basics.
  • For details, a brighter color.

If you want to choose a different color or shade, you can use white acrylic paint, and then add the desired color to it. Choosing the right shade, its appearance can be checked on a small piece of furniture. Thus, the color that is best suited is determined, its saturation is selected.

How to ground a cabinet

Before high-quality painting with your own hands the cabinet, its surface must be primed.

Wherein:

  • The primer will prevent the absorption of moisture by surfaces, which will contribute to high-quality drying.
  • The desired color will not be lost. After applying the paint to the surface without a primer, after drying, the color may change slightly, due to the absorption of part of it in the material.

It is best to use an acrylic based primer. The components of this primer interact well with the selected acrylic paint. Surface treatment with an acrylic primer is quite simple, the instructions for its use will help.

When using a primer:

  • It should dry completely.
  • It is necessary to make the correct calculations of the surface areas to be processed, which will allow you to get the right amount of material.
  • The cabinet is primed with a roller, a sufficiently thin layer.
  • The cabinet is left to dry completely.

How to paint a cupboard

Before repainting an old lacquered cabinet, you must purchase the following tools:

  • Brush.
  • Roller.

When choosing a tool should take into account the preferences of the owner and his skills, but it is more convenient to use a brush. The latter is more reliable and practical.

Brush Benefits:

  • The paint is applied over the entire surface in an even, uniform layer.
  • She can conveniently paint hard-to-reach spots.

Tip: Choosing a brush and paint rollers, preference should be given only to quality tools. Otherwise, villi will remain on the surface to be painted, falling out of the brush, which is of poor quality. Brushes should be chosen in different sizes, which will facilitate the execution of work.

Cabinet painting technology includes:

  • Application of the first layer is carried out with a paint of a lighter color than the selected one.
  • Its composition should be liquid.
  • When hardening, the paint is diluted with water.
  • The surface may acquire a different color, which depends on the number of layers applied:
  1. with one thin layer, the structure of the tree is translucent, it is well suited for Provence style;
  2. a thicker layer is obtained after applying several layers of paint.
  • Each layer is applied only after the previous one dries.
  • This mouth smears are applied in only one direction, then you get a uniform color and original structure.

Tip: When using two or more colors, the borders between them should be sealed with masking tape, which will prevent color mixing.

  • After a few days, a thin layer of matt transparent varnish is applied to the cabinet. It will better protect the painted surface from possible damage.
  • After the varnish dries, all previously removed parts are attached to the cabinet.

Thus, you can transform the old cabinet into a fashionable and original piece of furniture, which is well demonstrated by the video in this article.

How to age a cupboard

With a simple painting of the old cabinet, it takes on a completely faceless appearance, just a freshly repainted old piece of furniture that can be used on the balcony or in the garage. But it can become a stylish rarity, which will resemble ancient times, a true decoration of the interior.

Tip: Only matte shades should be used for painting. For the effect of antiquity, gloss is absolutely not suitable.

Before painting the cabinet antique, the surface is primed with a special primer or primer, which will prevent the penetration of wood oils on the finished surface and will contribute to better adhesion of the paint with a wooden base.

To perform the work you will need the following tools:

  • Brushes of good quality, different sizes.
  • Roller.
  • Foam rubber.
  • Aerosol.

Coating Technology:

  • Painting starts on the inconspicuous side of the cabinetthat will allow you to fill your hand and determine how much paint to take on the brush or roller, and, if necessary, change the shade of the paint.
  • The front wall of the cabinet is painted.
  • A second coat is applied after drying first, after about three hours.

“Aging” of the surface can be done in several ways:

Cabinet after
Cabinet after "aging"
  • “Wrapping” or “scraping”. For this:
  1. paint is applied;
  2. the coating dries;
  3. rub with sandpaper of a place where the deterioration of furniture is characteristic, for example, on handles, in corners. You can scrub before the primer or to the tree.
  • "The effect of the emergence of the old coating." In this case, the product is painted in two layers: a different color of paint is applied with a dry brush in the required places. In this case, the movements should be light, almost airy. This technique is called a "dry brush."
  • “The effect of the contaminated surface on time”. This effect can be achieved by uneven coating of dark wax in places where a person’s hands touch the cabinet.
  • An original and attractive technique - applying several layers of paint on each other. For instance:
  1. green paint is applied to the cleaned and pre-primed surface;
  2. the next layer is bronze or gold;
  3. the final layer is also green.

After the paint dries, rough sandpaper is taken and the surface of the cabinet is wiped with it. In this case, one paint should be visible through another. After this, the surface is rubbed with a finer sandpaper.

After obtaining a certain result, a thin layer of white is applied to the surface, which are diluted with water. The final operation is to cover the cabinet with craquelure varnish composition.

How to protect the coating

The paint on the cabinet can be protected with special wax, which is used for wood. Wax is applied to the surface with an ordinary clean cloth, as in the photo, or with a foam sponge. It is thoroughly rubbed and remains for fifteen minutes before drying.

Wax can be of two types:

  • Dark. The composition gets into the recesses, pits, various cuts, which gives the cabinet an inimitable effect of antiquity. If they cover the entire surface instead of transparent, the cabinet will become a darker shade.
  • Transparent. Such a coating does not change the color of the product.

Tip: Waxing should be applied after the matte acrylic varnish used in the decoration of wooden surfaces.

Updating furniture with varnish is best done every six months. The updated and beautifully painted wardrobe will give the interior of the room novelty and comfort.
