Tiling the toilet: installation recommendations
The simplest and most reliable option will be tiling in the toilet. They resort to it in order to protect the frame of the house from excessive moisture, due to the fact that the ceramic surface of the walls and floors is very easy to care for, and also because the tiles in the toilet can achieve an aesthetically attractive appearance, and high level of hygiene.

Instructions for finishing the toilet with ceramic tiles, preparatory work
Work aimed at facing tile for the toilet was correctly and securely attached to the surface being trimmed, it should begin with the preparatory stage.
So:
- It involves going through a fairly simple procedure for choosing the size, color and quality that a toilet tile should have.
- It is worth relying on your personal preferences and material capabilities, since the price of this type of building material is very high.
- But when choosing the dimensions of the tiles, it is recommended to start from the dimensions of the toilet itself.
- If, for example, it has a very modest area, then you should not use a large, for example, 40x40 cm tile, since all your work will consist of the fact that you will cut out smaller elements from it, and each time take on the grinder.
For reference. It is better if you will purchase tiles for the toilet of smaller sizes, which is much more convenient to lay out.
Material calculation
The next thing that needs to be done is to calculate the exact amount of tile, adding another 5 percent to it, which will go to cover the marriage, without which no package of building materials can do, and in case you accidentally break it yourself or cut it off some element of ceramics.
What you need to provide:
- To do the calculations, you need based on what you choose the location of the tiles.
- Given that the standard form of the toilet (seeFinishing the toilet with panels and other types of material) is a vertically elongated rectangle.
- It is best to lay out rectangular tiles in the horizontal direction, which will visually expand the space.
- Vertically laid out ceramic elements stretch the room even more, making it look like a well or elevator.
Tip. It is desirable that in the preparation process, the location of the tiles - inserts and other decorative elements was taken into account.
- Not bad in narrow rooms looks combined tile lining of toilets, which involves the horizontal separation of the walls into 2 parts.
- At the same time, toilet tiles of different colors are laid on top and bottom.
- Most often, from below lay out a coating of dark tones, and on top of lighter ones.
- To separate these areas, decorative ceramic borders are used that are suitable in color and in the lower and upper coatings.
For reference. Those who want to always have a fashionable restroom should be inclined to the classic option of finishing - lay out the entire wall in one color.
Alignment of walls and floor
Perhaps the most important step in preparing surfaces for cladding ceramic tiles is the alignment of the walls and floor horizontally and vertically. The importance is that the final result of your work will depend on it.
Any deviations or curvature will be emphasized by the glossy shine of the tile, and you can hardly hide them.
For these purposes, use any of the following materials:
- Gypsum,
- Putty,
- Plaster,
- Moisture-resistant drywall.
Note. The last of the listed materials is used extremely rarely, but it also has a place to be. Since the walls and floor in almost all, even recently erected houses, do not differ in an ideal flat surface.
To do this, you need the following materials and tools:
- Construction plaster (sold pre-packaged in dry form),
- Master OK,
- Putty knife,
- Rule
- Building level,
- Lacing,
- Plumb line.
So:
- The thickness of the plaster layer on the entire surface will have to be calculated separately. To get a flat surface for plastering, it is necessary to arrange guide beacons.
- They are arranged vertically and must be made of mortar. You can use factory T-shaped aluminum beacons.
Before applying the plaster, the walls should be primed with an antibacterial and waterproof solution.
For reference. Sometimes, to ensure a more reliable adhesion of the plaster to the surface, a third of the PVA glue is added to the mixture.
- The plaster is applied to the wall with a spatula and aligned with the made beacons using the rule.
- In small portions it is laid on the wall from the bottom up, with small movements distributing it from side to side. So that the mixture does not stick to the instrument, it must be periodically moistened with water.
Level the floor with a concrete screed.
Facing the walls with tiles in the toilet, the main stages
A process such as tiling the toilet begins with plastering the base, as well as applying an antibacterial primer to it. Laying tiles in the toilet starts from the floor.
Here you need to do some calculations:
- The height of the wall must be divided by the height of the tiles used for decoration, taking into account the thickness of the seam of 3 mm.
- So, for example, the height of the wall in the toilet is 260 cm, the tile you use is 30 cm high. It turns out that you will have 8 rows of full tiles (260: 30.3).
- At the same time, 1 row will remain incomplete - 17.6 cm high. This means that first you will have to step back this value from the floor and install a limiter on the wall.
It may be some kind of stand or attached rail. - After the entire wall is tiled, you can pull out this stop, and cut to the right size tile to report to the floor.
- Similarly, the calculation of the tiles along the width of the wall.
Tip. After performing all calculations, you can knead the adhesive solution.
To do this, you only need the glue itself (in the form of a powder) and water. For mixing, it is recommended to use a construction mixer. For the correct proportions in which the ingredients are mixed, see the adhesive packaging.
When mixing, take an amount of the mixture that you can use before the solution dries. The optimal amount is considered to be mixing the solution with 7 - 8 kg of powder.
Putting tiles on the walls in the toilet
Almost everyone can cope with the task, because no special difficulties are observed in this event, see the photo. And in order to study in detail as much as possible each stage of tiling the toilet, you can act according to the algorithm in the video instruction.
Work Stages:
- First, tile adhesive is applied to the wall using a conventional spatula. It is important to calculate correctly the area on which the glue will be applied. It is usually recommended to apply glue under 4 - 5 tiles.
- Next, it is necessary to level the adhesive solution on the wall with a notched trowel. This contributes to better adherence of the tile to the wall.
- The tile leans against the wall with force. In those places where it is difficult to cope only with hands, it is recommended to use a rubber mallet. It will not damage the surface of the tiles, but put them in the right position.
- The spaces between the tiles must be made the same. This is done by inserting plastic crosses into the seams. The horizontal level is leveled using the construction level.
- The final stage is washing off excess glue from the surface of the tile and filling the joints with grout.
Grouting is done with a rubber spatula. To do this, you need to purchase a powder composition, which, like glue, is diluted with water.
The grout should be moderately thick, not liquid. It will be possible to erase it from the tile the next day.
