Wood kitchen finishes: various options

Gusevsky Andrey Anatolyevich

Wood for many decades remains a popular material for decoration. There is nothing to say about wooden houses - such a way of decorating is quite natural for them. Yes, and any other house: from brick, stone, foam blocks - a wooden finish will only decorate. As for city apartments, it so happened that in living rooms, only a floor or ceiling can be made of wood. The main use of wood in the apartment is to finish the wooden lining of the kitchen, loggia or balcony. Most often, these rooms are structurally combined with each other. In this article we will tell you about all types of finishing materials from wood, and how to make wall cladding with your own hands.

Finishing materials from wood

The advantages of wood as a natural material are undeniable. That is why interest in him never fades away, and not only in the manufacture of furniture, but also in construction. The interior decoration of the rooms with wood makes the interior rustic and cozy. The unique woody aroma is not only very pleasant - it contributes to the healing of a person and makes the air cleaner. Coniferous wood is particularly distinguished by this effect.

Clapboard

This board is today the most widely used for interior decoration. They make it from high quality wood. In production, various species of trees are used, not only coniferous, but also deciduous.

First, edged boards are made and dried industrially. Then, tongue-and-groove joints are applied to it, polished and sorted. There are four types of boards in terms of wood quality, the best of which is Extra.

The remaining three grades (A; B; C) may have defects allowed by the state standard. Lining is of several types, differing in cross-section profile. The types of boards shown in the photo are made according to Russian GOST.

There is such a thing as “euro lining”. It is manufactured according to the European standard, has a wider assortment, and better quality. Finishing a kitchen with a wooden lining is most often carried out precisely from this type of board.

Wooden panels

In interior decoration, wood panels are also very popular. The panels are made not only of valuable wood species, but also of MDF veneered. To give them a beautiful appearance, various techniques are used in the production: carving, gilding, varnishing, various inserts.

  • There are budget options from fiberboard, laminated with film. In damp rooms, it is better not to use such panels. The rather loose structure of the material attracts moisture, from this panel can be deformed.

They do not have a specific purpose for use, and are used both for ceilings and for walls. Sometimes they are used not for continuous cladding, but for partial decoration.

Installation of such panels is even simpler than lining, but their price is much higher. But wall decoration in the kitchen with wood, in the form of beautiful panels, will allow not only to create a rustic interior, but also an original design.

You can apply them not only for finishing the kitchen: the entrance hall, living room, study will also look solid and respectable.

Wall cladding in wood

Any material made of wood is sensitive to temperature changes, as well as to humidity. Therefore, you can’t immediately begin installation - only after a day.Preliminary preparation of the walls is not required, you just need to clean them. If it is necessary to carry out electrical work, the walls are finished with wood in the kitchen after they are finished.

Lining

Such wall decoration refers to frame methods of cladding. Their essence is that the decorative surface is attached to the wall not by hermetic means, but on a wooden or metal frame. In the case of a wooden lining, it makes no sense to use a metal profile, it is better to have wooden bars. Then, nails can also be used as fasteners.

  • Depending on the size of the board, wooden battens are used for the battens - most often, this is the size of 60x27 mm. They are attached to the wall with screws, at a distance of 40-60 cm from each other.
  • Wider planks may be needed only if the lining is fixed at an angle to create any kind of composition. How this is done, watch the video.

In those places where it is impossible to drill a wall (wiring interferes, or a gas pipe), the bar can be glued. Glue "liquid nails" will completely cope with this task.

  • The main thing that you need to pay attention to when installing the frame is that it must be accurately set according to the level. This can be achieved using wedges made of wood or plastic, hammered under the slats.
  • The wooden frame must be treated with an anti-corrosion compound. This will extend the life of the material and protect it from fungus and dampness. If the walls need thermal insulation, a layer of mineral wool or polystyrene is laid between the bars and covered with a vapor barrier film.
  • When the crate is ready, you can start cutting the board to size. To do this, it is better to use a jigsaw, but if you do not have such a tool, you can use a hacksaw.
  • Sheathing usually starts from the left corner of the wall. Having fixed the first board with the help of clamps, the rest are mounted using the comb-groove method. There is nothing complicated about this, but if you have absolutely no experience in such work, the instruction will not hurt you.
  • If necessary, to fix the boards, you can use almost any method of fastening - at least a nail with a bitten off hat. At the end of the installation, the recesses formed on the surface of the wood can be puttied. After opening with varnish or stain, they will not be visible.
  • An excellent way of fastening are decorative screws. Their curly hats can complement and decorate a wooden surface. All joints of surfaces are closed with corners, skirting boards or decorative slats.

After the lining is finished, window and door slopes are made out. They do not have to be made of wood, for this you can use any material that mimics the wood texture - MDF panels, laminate, plastic.

Wood paneling

Since there are many types of wood panels, installation can be done in various ways.

  • If they have a tongue-and-groove connection, then their installation is practically no different from planking. By the way, such panels are recruited from rails similar to lining. They are used not only for wall cladding, but also for ceilings.
  • They can have a square or rectangular shape, most often 30x30 or 30x60 centimeters. The method of fastening such panels can be selected, depending on the state of the wall surface. If they are even and smooth, you won’t have to do the frame, just put the panels on glue. Just before this, it is better to prime the wall.

Panels made of solid wood, or MDF with veneer coating, are mounted on a metal profile frame, as they have a more solid weight. The profile for this is used the same as for suspended ceilings. Such a frame is much more durable than a wooden crate.

Decorating the walls with wood in the kitchen can combine several types of wooden elements: panels of various shapes or colors and a lining board. At the same time, the wooden suspended ceiling also looks great, with stained-glass windows and original lighting. This makes it possible to avoid the monotony of surfaces and maintain the interior design in a single style.
