And communication and eating should take place in the most comfortable atmosphere. Therefore, wall decoration in the kitchen is the most critical part of the repair.
In this room, you can use almost all types of finishing materials - you just need to take into account that they are designed for rooms with high humidity. How to combine them correctly to get not only practical, but also the original interior, and what types of wall decoration in the kitchen exist - we will tell in this article.

Preparing the kitchen for repair
If the image of your kitchen is going to undergo drastic changes, then careful preparation of all surfaces will be necessary. It is better to decide on the choice of finishing materials for the ceiling and walls in advance - the degree of their preparation will depend on this.
So:
- Having disconnected and removed all kitchen equipment, first of all, you need to take care of the pipes and valves. Surely, they have served for many years, and even if an emergency has not yet happened, it is better to immediately change them.
So you can avoid the surprises presented by communications after the repair. - Now you can do the cleaning of the surfaces of the ceiling and walls. In prefabricated houses it is easier, concrete walls do not need to be leveled, they are only puttyed if necessary.
- This mainly concerns brick houses - brick walls are often uneven, with a thick layer of mortar. Therefore, having removed the decorative layer, it is necessary to check how well the stucco adheres.
- The presence of voids beneath it is determined by tapping the walls with the handle of a spatula. Anything that does not hold well should be cleaned off, even if you are carrying out panel lining.
Another thing is that under the skin the surface will not need to be leveled. - Most wall decoration options require a perfectly smooth surface, so alignment is indispensable. In this case, the old plaster is removed completely.
One spatula can not do here - you will need a hammer drill. - Even if you will invite specialists for finishing, preparatory work can be done with your own hands. In this case, the repair price will be an order of magnitude lower, because the tariffs for such time-consuming work are quite high.
- The floor can not be touched yet, its old coating is removed after plastering all surfaces. Floor screed will be carried out last, it is possible even after finishing the kitchen: walls and ceiling - completed.
- After thorough cleaning of the surfaces, it is worth considering whether it is necessary to replace the old sockets, install new ones in another place. It's time to replace the wiring and the device of the conclusions for the lamps.
- It is at this stage that all electrical work is carried out, and only then they start roughing, if necessary. If you are interested in how plastering is done, you can watch a video, which is enough on the Internet.
When the rough finish is finished, and all surfaces are primed, you can proceed to the finish. You need to start from the ceiling.
Naturally, you should think in advance what kind of structure there will be, and how the ceiling decorative finish will be combined with the materials of the walls.
Materials for the working area
A kitchen is a room that is divided into two zones: a work room and a dining room. The working zone includes the wall with the stove and sink installed.
It is here that water splashes on the walls, grease gets in, steam from a boiling pot acts. Therefore, you must immediately think about how to finish the working wall in the kitchen.
Ceramics
There are fewer options for the work area than for the rest of this room. After all, the materials on this wall must be vapor-proof, and it is good to withstand the action of modern achievements in household chemicals, with which they will be cleaned.
Number one on this list, of course, is tiling the walls in the kitchen:
- The tile has many varieties, and a huge range of textures and colors. Decorative elements of various shapes are produced, allowing you to create various compositions.
In the photo below - the most common finish of the working area.
- Finishes made of ceramic or glass mosaics look very interesting. A panel is laid out from the loose elements, or they simply use a finished mosaic tile.
- Ceramic smooth or mosaic tiles, in principle, can be finished the entire wall, to the ceiling, and not just a small section of it. Sometimes tiles are laid from the floor to the middle of the wall, in the form of panels.
- In this case, the upper part of the wall is decorated with wallpaper or painting, as in our example, and must be combined in color with the materials of the floor.
Tile decoration of the walls of the kitchen is not a cheap pleasure, so no one glues the walls with tiles for a hundred percent. Yes and there is no such need: the kitchen is not a bathroom, the humidity coefficient is much lower.
And then, if all the walls are finished uniformly, their surface will be monotonous, and will not create comfort.
Glass
Not so long ago, manufacturers began to offer shockproof tempered glass for finishing the kitchen work area - skins. Its thickness reaches eight millimeters, and its strength exceeds the performance of ordinary glass by forty times.
It is almost impossible to accidentally break such a surface.
- Glass for wall decoration of the kitchen has several advantages over other types of decoration. This is a quick manufacturing process and simple installation technology; the ability to create any shape and drawing; low cost.
- A panel of such glass meets all the requirements for the working area of the kitchen, has no drawbacks. Images are applied in harmony with the color of the kitchen.
- Almost always, skinali is used in the design of kitchens in high-tech and modern styles, because its coloring can be either monophonic or contain any landscape or still life.
- The drawing on the glass is applied with a special waterproof paint on the back of the glass, which guarantees its safety for the entire period of operation.
- With the same success, for the design of the working wall, you can use another type of glass - hardboard (acrylic glass). There are a lot of ways to apply a pattern on acrylic glass: faceting, painting, color overlay, sandblasting pattern.
Wall and ceiling finishes with frosted acrylic glass
What is important - this finish will go well with an acrylic suspended ceiling. Thanks to this, you can create a magnificent interior, as in the picture above.
Chipboard laminated
Performing custom-made kitchen sets, manufacturers always offer an “apron” made of the same material as the countertop.
- Sometimes it comes bundled. To mount such an element is so simple that companies often make its installation for free. The apron is installed on the frame and fixed with glue.
- The choice of colors of the laminated surface is quite wide. These are imitations of various natural materials: wood, marble, stone.
There are solid colors and abstract designs. Brick wall decoration in the kitchen is very popular.
Laminated chipboard enables such a finish. - It is not necessary that the working wall be the same color as the headset headset. The color can be chosen to your liking, combining with any element of the interior of the kitchen.
Particleboard is inferior to glass and ceramics both in strength and durability. Under the influence of high temperatures, the laminate film can peel off, warp.
In addition, it does not have refractory properties, like its competitors. Therefore, it is not worth calculating the long life of such an apron.
Decorative rock
Another option for finishing the work area is a decorative stone: both natural and artificial.
We note right away that this is the most expensive type of finish, therefore it is used more often in design projects. But good cannot be cheap.
So:
- Natural stone has long been used in the decoration of kitchens, as the most durable and safe material. The range offered by manufacturers is constantly expanding, but one stone never gives up its position - it is marble.
- Its perfectly smooth surface makes it easy to wipe off any drops of fat that fall on it during frying. Marble is not afraid of either temperature or chemical influences.
What, in fact, is required from the working area of the kitchen. - It is worth saying that not only the stone itself is popular, but also any of its imitations. This is facilitated by its natural beautiful textures.
- By the way, not all stones, like marble, are resistant to the ingress of fat on their surface. Many of them have oily spots that are not easy to remove.
- This is due to the fact that they have a more porous structure. It is better to use such a stone not for the working area, as shown in the picture below.
- Yes, and aesthetically this decoration does not look very much. The decor with a porous stone is much more suitable for individual elements of the dining area.
Look at the bottom picture - the difference is obvious.
- In our next example, the wall decoration in the kitchen is presented with a decorative stone with a dense structure and smooth surface. In combination with a light wooden set, a very cozy interior was obtained.
- Such a design can be created using other materials that mimic the texture of the stone: chipboard, wallpaper, self-adhesive film - and decorate all the walls, not just the working area.
Finishing the working wall in the kitchen is sometimes done with other materials that are rarely used for this purpose. These are panels from stainless steel, brass, copper.
Recently, alucobond - aluminum rails, which are often used for external cladding, began to be used. But these materials did not find wide distribution in the decoration of kitchens.
Dining area
This part of the kitchen is not subjected to intense exposure to high temperatures and humidity, so the options for finishing the dining area are expanding. In principle, here you can partially use all the materials used to finish the apron.
We have already talked about many of them. Consider how to decorate the walls in the kitchen with more affordable materials.
Dyeing
This type of finish is the most affordable. A wide range of colors of acrylic, latex, and silicone water-dispersion paints allows you to create beautiful compositions.
- If you consider that all surfaces have already been prepared for further finishing, it will not be difficult to paint the ceiling and walls - manage in one day. Expensive tools are also not required: a bucket, a paint tray and a roller, cost a penny.
- Walls can be painted by combining several shades; as an additional decor, apply the picture using a stencil. Properly selected colors will visually expand the volume of the room.
The matte surface of the walls looks great. And for the ceiling, glossy paints are better, the instruction on the bank necessarily reflects this figure in numerical terms from 0 to 100.
The number one hundred is the maximum indicator of gloss.
Plastic and MDF paneling
Frame cladding of ceilings and walls with plastic, can be attributed to the category of budget finishing options. This is facilitated by both the low cost of this material, and the ability to do without leveling the surfaces. MDF is only slightly more expensive than plastic panels.
- But in bulk these materials are still not used in the kitchen. Continuous sheathing creates a monotonous surface, partial finishing from the floor to the middle of the wall, makes the kitchen look like some kind of office.
- To avoid this, the wall paneling of the kitchen should be combined with other types of materials, using elements of additional decor, as in the photo above. But for a suspended ceiling - this is a great option.
Wallpaper
It is unlikely that any other material can compete with the wallpaper in the assortment, except perhaps ceramic tiles. But ceramics is a cold material, and it does not create comfort.
It is more associated with the bathroom. Wallpaper can make even an empty room cozy.
So:
- There are washable wallpaper for painting, they have a huge range of textures. But why paint the wallpaper, if you can immediately paint the wall.
Double work, plus double purchase of materials. - It is much better to take a vinyl wallpaper, or non-woven. The options for their colors simply have no boundaries.
Any patterns: strip, stylized wood and stone, flowers, photo printing - this is not a complete list of what you can choose.
There are also cullets that have great strength and interesting textures, but they are very expensive. They are hard to glue, and you need a special glue.
It is also expensive, and is consumed in larger quantities than for ordinary wallpapers. Such decoration in the kitchen walls is unlikely to occur to the owners of typical apartments.
Why pay more if you can do without such frills.
