Contraindications for putting putty on old paint

If we talk about whether it is possible to put putty on paint, then professional masters give a positive answer to this question, but it should be borne in mind that this preparation for finishing is not always possible. Here are the contraindications for its implementation:

  • coating the surface with paint-enamel, which contains drying oil;
  • peeling paint;
  • the presence on the building base of fungus or mold;
  • peeling surface.

As for whether it is possible to put putty on a water-based paint, such work is also among the contraindications. If you put the composition on this coating, then over time it will begin to exfoliate, which will cause the need for repeated repairs. This is because the water-based paint has the ability to absorb water from putty. This leads to peeling of the coating. It is possible to determine that the finish coating was made with this paint using plain water. The liquid is applied to the surface and if the paint begins to wash off and foam easily, then this is a water-based paint. Before applying putty, the composition is removed from the base.

Do not putty on peeling paint.

Is it possible to put putty on an old putty?

It is possible to put putty on putty - another popular question among lay people who decide to make repairs with their own hands. There is no definite answer to it. If no defects were formed on the old putty, then on top of it you can put the finishing composition, but only after priming the surface. Starting tool is not recommended here. If cracks have formed on the old putty, it is recommended to dismantle it.

As for whether it is possible to apply plaster on the putty, professional craftsmen give a definite answer to it. This cannot be done. Plaster will create an extra load on the putty, then lead to the formation of defects. As a result, there will be a need for a new repair.

The new putty is applied to the old only in the absence of defects

Building foundation preparation

Preparation of the base for the application of putty is the first stage of work, which is to free the building base from the old coating. However, if oil paint adheres firmly to the surface, then the walls are cleaned of dirt and you can proceed to the next stage of work. If the coating was done with a different type of paint or cracked, then work cannot be started until the surface is cleaned. There are three ways to remove material:

  • Chemical method. It implies the use of special tools that facilitate the removal of old paint. The product is applied to the building foundation at the time indicated on the label. After that, the coating is removed with a spatula. Before the work is done, the room is ventilated so that there is no intoxication of the body.
  • Thermal method. It involves surface treatment with hot air.As a result, the paint softens and is removed with a spatula. The work is carried out by a special building hairdryer (as in the photo), so the disadvantage of this method is the high price of the tool.
  • The mechanical method. It consists in removing paint with a spatula or grinder. This method of dismantling the old coating is the most budgetary, but takes a lot of time. The mechanical method can only remove paint that does not adhere well to the surface. The remaining areas are recommended to be freed from coating with a special liquid or a building hair dryer.
