Painting a wooden house will help for many years, it looked as if work on it was completed yesterday. First of all, you should choose a quality facade paint. The facade of the house is his face. So that for many years it would have a presentable appearance, the surface is painted with a proprietary product.

An excellent quality facade paint has a lot of advantages: it will not fade and leave in layers, and dust and dirt are not afraid of it. Today we will look at how to paint a wooden house and which dyes are suitable for this. Also in the video in this article you can see a lot of useful information.

Painting the house and what is needed for this

The choice of paint for a wooden house quite an important point. After all, not only the appearance, but also the service life will depend on this. Its price is quite different, it all depends on the material itself.

Let's now understand how the dye is selected and determine its functions:

  • The painting of the wooden facade should have an impeccable appearance for a long time. Paint should not fade, no matter how dark it is.
  • Purchased goods must be thick. The characteristic property of becoming liquid paint is after mixing, as a result of which uniform application is achieved.
  • It is clear that for a top product you will have to pay at the level. Quality paint cannot and should not be cheap. The branded product has high wear resistance. The issue of re-painting will not arise for many years. Therefore, saving on it makes no sense.

Ink classification

It is impossible to say for sure which paint is better to paint a wooden house, because the country is large and operation depends on the region.

Knowing the composition of paints, you can give a clear description of its operational properties:

  • The film former is one of the main components. The quality of the paint directly depends on the film-forming substance. After application on hard surfaces it forms a solid film. This bond is due to the solvent evaporating or drying out. With the substrate has high adhesion.

Paints are organically soluble and water-soluble:

  • Organic solvent based paintsform a denser film (which cannot be said about paints based on plyolite resins). Water vapor passes through them poorly. They have pronounced toxicity. And looking at the fire side, they can not be called safe. The pluses include weather resistance and the ability to use at sub-zero temperatures.
  • Water soluble paints are a water based product. Free of toxic, flammable organic solvents, they are highly environmentally friendly. The basis of water-soluble paints can be aqueous dispersions of various polymers (water dispersion, water emulsion, emulsion, latex (see Latex paint: how to work with it)). Water-soluble paints can also be mineral (inorganic binders are the basis).
Water dispersion paintsThe film formers are suspended in water in the form of minute particles. This paint is non-toxic. The desired consistency is achieved by dilution with water. Fireproof.
  • A distinctive feature of vinyl paints is a suspension of semi-vinyl acetate or vinyl acetate copolymers is a film former of vinyl paints.
  • They have a relatively inexpensive price category. Water resistance is lower than acrylic paints.

AcrylicAcrylic paints have a suspension of acrylate copolymers. The adhesion to the base is at a high level.
  • They practically do not allow steam, therefore, the range of use is concrete surfaces and cement-fiber boards.
  • The use does not apply to silicate substrates and lime plaster.
SiliconeSilicone paints (they are also called siloxane, silane, organosilicon).
  • A suspension of silicone resins is a binder component. It is almost impossible to penetrate moisture into the wall protected by this paint.
  • Self-cleaning properties are another nice bonus.
  • They have a neutral electric charge. There is no thermoplasticity. Having high water-repellent qualities, they easily allow steam to penetrate.
  • Silicone coatings are difficult to contaminate. It is allowed to apply on surfaces painted before that with any other paint.
  • They are used both on mineral substrates and on brick, concrete or cement-fiber boards.

Attention: Paints with a vinyl and acrylic base, plus paints with a base of silicone resins are both organically soluble and water-soluble.

Mineral paint

The cost of painting a wooden house will be cheaper from acrylic materials. Mineral dyes are divided into lime, silicate and cement.

  • In lime paints, hydrated lime is considered a film-forming agent. The property of lime carbonized in air gives the coating strength. Paint release form: ready-made pigmented mixtures or pastes, which you can add pigments to yourself. In the color scheme, lime paints are limited, since only alkali-resistant pigments are suitable for them.
  • The price of lime paints is low. Naturally, treated surfaces cannot boast of strength and durability. To date, their use has declined. However, if you want to restore an architectural monument, these paints are not interchangeable.
  • The foaming agent in silicate paints is liquid glass. The colors of these paints are also limited. In addition to the above, without certain skills, applying them will be problematic. A specialist will better cope with the task.
  • Walls that previously used acrylic or silicate paints are not recommended. But the surfaces on which paint of a similar type or lime was used before may be subject to further painting.
  • In cement paints, the film former is either white or colored Portland cement. In this regard, alkali-resistant pigments are used.
  • To increase the available ability to retain water, add slaked lime (not more than fifteen percent). To increase resistance to atmospheric phenomena, it is recommended to introduce about one percent of hydrophobic substances. Surfaces treated with cement paints are vapor permeable and weather resistant.
  • The range of use is the same as for lime paints. However, the rate of peeling from the surface is higher.

Paint Storage Guidelines

Paint for a house made of wood has a long shelf life, but this is only with proper storage:

  • The optimal storage temperature of the purchased goods should be a temperature that does not go beyond minus five degrees.
  • Low temperatures, as well as high ones, adversely affect the quality of the paint. It is also unacceptable to store paint in direct sunlight.
  • If storage conditions are violated, this will affect the quality of the paint. The appearance of lumps is unacceptable. Paint loses its uniformity, which means that it becomes unusable.

Selection guide

Often the owners, whose possessions are in close proximity to busy traffic or the industrial zone, note that the paint turns gray after a short period of time. Therefore, much attention is paid to a coating resistant to pollution.

So:

  • Dirt settles on any surface. However, there are paints that do not absorb when used. The formation of a hydrophobic film contributes to the rapid washing off of contaminants. The ability to cleanse oneself is one of the features that attracts attention. Contaminants do not penetrate deep into the surface, but remain outside. During rain, a quick removal from the surface occurs without the use of outside help.
  • An increase in the hydrophobic properties of the paint occurs within a month. The first place among dirt-repellent paints is occupied by silicone. The use of acrylic and silicate paints containing silicone polymers follows in second place. However, the percentage of resin manufacturers “forget” to indicate. And this affects the quality of the ordered goods. The higher the resin content, the better the paint, but “by eye” it is difficult to determine.
  • Better to use products with an excellent reputation. If a neighbor, after more than two years after painting, has color preservation and cleanliness on the facade, this is a sign of high quality paint. It is on the brand of this product that you should pay attention to.

Attention: Choosing glossy paints, you end up with the most dirt-resistant surface. From such a surface, precipitation will wash off the pollution perfectly. Also, the color scheme of dark tones will help make dust less noticeable.

Often the manufacturer indicates the vapor permeability of his product. This creates the illusion of a breathing and healthy home. Vapor movement depends on the density of the outer facade shell.

Condensate accumulated underneath contributes to rapid flaking. A surface not primed before application of paint can also lead to an increase in such a result.

Preparation for painting

All painting work can be completely done with your own hands. The instruction here is so complicated. A prerequisite is high-quality preparation of the substrate for applying paint. This is the key to long-term preservation of the appearance of the facade.

If you are going to update the facade of an old estate or a freshly bought one, it does not matter, the main thing is to be primed (see Primer wood before painting - process features) The choice of primer will also depend on the type of paint. It should be selected, focusing on the paint.

  • The color of the primer depends on the film former. Basically, it has no color. Soil will help the paint better adhere to the base. Do not save on the purchase of soil. The costs associated with this will not be in vain. Less paint is used on the primed surface, and it will be much easier to paint it.
  • Before priming, the base must be thoroughly inspected. If it has a dense structure (not rotten), then the paint will not peel off. There is a simple way to preliminary estimate the basis. For this, a regular stationery tape is useful. It should be glued to the base, and after a minute tear off. Visually evaluate the tape. The absence of small wooden particles with paint residues indicates that the base structure is dense and durable.
  • After plastering (see How to plaster a wooden wall) and before painting the wall should “rest”. Within a month, complete drying of the surface is achieved. Such a measure is extremely necessary. The uniformity of the resulting color depends on this. For example, prematurely applied on a lime plaster, will fall under the stains. You can forget about the uniformity of color. Therefore, it is extremely important to allocate enough time for full drying.
  • A surface that has already been painted must be carefully inspected. If it bubbles and is going to peel off at the slightest pressure, the old paint must be completely removed. First, it is scraped off with a spatula. After the pressure of water, the residues are washed off. Wait until completely dry. Next, apply a primer layer. With excellent preservation of old paint on the surface, in principle, you can do without a primer.

The next step: double coating with finishing paint. The film former and solvent in the ordered product must match the type. Failure to do so may result in poor adhesion of the paint to the surface.

“Fill” the facade with color

Do you want the facade of your house to blend in harmoniously with your surroundings without losing your personality? Following fashion trends and the advice of specialists on the use of the ordered goods, you can give the facade a presentable appearance.

So:

  • Light paint in pastel colors is best suited to the facade. Playing shades of one color, you can significantly revive the appearance. Shading of the facade elements in this way will advantageously emphasize its texture.
  • The color of the roof is recommended to darken the color of the walls. If you want to do the opposite, then you can’t do without a designer hint.
  • You can “fill” the facade with different colors. Pay due attention to combining them.
  • Horizontal façade elements can also be expressed with a play of color.
  • The painted upper part of the house is lighter in tone than the lower visually gives the house height and grace.
  • In order for the building not to be in opposition to the landscape surrounding it, the “pouring” of the facade should be approached deliberately and thoroughly.

Even the best paint for a wooden house will not last long if you do not make a quality surface preparation. This is perhaps the key point. So look at the photo and select the desired coating option and you can take your time to get to work.
