The popularity of plastic windows is growing. Despite this, there were those who prefer not to part with wooden windows, but to keep them in good condition.

Every year, such a design requires careful maintenance. And one of the important processes is painting old wooden windows. Everything can be done with your own hands and then the price will not be high. In this case, you will get an attractive and high-quality coating.

Performing window painting yourself

Repair and painting of wooden windows is done in a specific order. Here, preparation is also important, which will ensure the adhesion of surfaces. The dye itself, which must be of high quality, is also important.

Attention: In winter, you should not buy paint from open trays. It may freeze curl when dried.

Paint selection

What paint is better for wooden windows will be better, you need to look at the environment. It is better to take a dye for external surfaces. It perfectly tolerates low temperatures. The instructions on the bank will tell you about this.

There are several important points that you should pay attention to when choosing paint for wooden windows:

  1. Choose moisture resistant paint. Then water cannot penetrate into the tree (see What paint is better to paint a tree: we make a choice) An important parameter, since moisture can destroy the wooden structure from the inside. Mold may form, the window will begin to rot. And moisture resistant paint protects the structure from moisture;
  2. The paint should be flexible. After all, often a tree begins to swell and take a seat. Elastic paint will be able to maintain its integrity during these processes; it will not crack or deform. Also, if the window is located on the sunny side, it is recommended to choose light shades of paint. Then the rays of the sun will be reflected from the frame and will not accelerate the drying of the tree.

If you have a shadowy side, then you should choose a shade based on your own tastes. The choice of paint is influenced by the wood used to make the frame and the climatic conditions in which you live. For a mild climate, choose an oil one. If the type of wood is not very resistant to external influences, it is recommended to protect the window with varnish.

Preparatory work

Preparation of wooden windows for painting is of great importance. After all, even the highest quality dye will not last long if they ate painted the window without preparation.

Attention: For longer preservation of window frames, it is recommended to choose the right time for repair. The scorching sun will interfere with you, as will snowfall with rain.

A suitable time is a warm day in spring when there is no scorching sun. Then ultraviolet light will not aggressively affect the structure of the paint and destroy it. Moisture also does not become a hindrance. For windows to dry quickly, pay attention to air temperature and humidity. Ideal indicators are a thermometer above 5 degrees and a humidity of less than 80%.

Do not paint on a damp surface. Subsequently, bubbles will appear in these areas. You have to start all over again.

There are several stages that you need to adhere to during the preparatory work:

  1. First you need to get rid of the old coating from the frame. You will need a scraper and sandpaper to remove the old layer. Please note that sandpaper should be selected with coarse grains.At the end of the work, make sure that the window closes easily. If problems arise, grind the surface using a drill with a special nozzle. However, proceed with caution; otherwise, wood may be damaged;
  2. Now there are also special solutions designed to remove old paint (see How to remove paint from a tree: do it by the rules). They significantly speed up and simplify the process. You can buy them at car dealers, because they are used, as a rule, for cars. The solution is applied to the frame and remains for a while, until the paint becomes like a curd. Then it is cleaned with a spatula;
  3. Before painting, it is recommended to remove the window fittings and window sashes. Repair and replacement of any parts is carried out before painting the frames. If it is impossible to remove the locks and handles, you need to wrap them with masking tape and the paint will not get on them;
  4. In the same way you need to prepare the glass. It is recommended to seal the windows with the help of old newspapers and masking tape, stepping back a few millimeters from the edge. Then, if it gets into these cracks, the paint will not allow water to accumulate in them;
  5. Old glazing beads should be discarded. New ones should be painted separately from the window itself. Then they are attached with nails at the last stage of repair.

Putty and priming work

After the window has been prepared, it must be carefully inspected. Elements that are susceptible to rust should be treated with an iron primer.

Caution: Be sure to treat the tree with an antiseptic. It could be linseed oil. This process helps prevent rotting of the tree, the development of fungus, and also eliminates the possibility of insects.

So:

  • The surface of the windows must be carefully inspected. Found holes and cracks should be puttied (see Hard putty on wood: how to do it wisely) Do not immediately cover them with a large layer of putty. Apply it gradually. Otherwise, it will simply fall off with the paint.
  • Please note that only a special putty for wood is suitable, any is not suitable. If you are going to just paint the window, then just putty is simply applied to the surface. If you are going to use a stain, the putty areas will be visible through it. Therefore, it is first necessary to tint the putty to match the color of the wood with the help of a tint.
  • After you put the first layer of putty you need to clean the area with emery cloth, sand it and remove dust with a damp rag. When everything dries, the surface is polished again with sandpaper. Note that here you already need to use the one that has a fine grain. Then the dust is removed. Carefully inspect the surface for scratches, chips, and repeat the procedure again if necessary. Puttying is so necessary until the surface becomes perfectly flat.
  • After this, you can proceed to the priming work. Thanks to them, the paint will hold onto the surface reliably. It is worth noting that there are primers that also combine an antiseptic. When applied, a special protective film is formed. It is colorless, so the natural pattern of the tree will be preserved.
  • The primer has many different components, including oil, glue, resin, pigments. Each type of primer has its own specific composition. But all primers for wood help preserve the structure of wood. Therefore, you can not use a primer for metal to cover wooden windows.
  • Before applying the primer, you need to clean the surface, and then degrease it. It is more convenient to use a brush in this case. Please note that if the putty does not dry out sufficiently, or when performing priming work, you will skip some area, in this area after a while a dark spot forms.And the whole process will have to start all over again.

Painting in several layers

After reaching a perfectly flat surface of the window, you can start applying paint. Previously, you should tidy up the room a bit, remove dust from the entire space next to the window, so that the dirt does not get on the freshly painted frame.

 Dye application

Caution: You should choose a water-acrylate or alkyd paint for wood. It combines all the important parameters, including elasticity, moisture resistance and resistance to fading when exposed to sunlight.

  • Once you have opened the paint, you need to mix it thoroughly right in the jar. Then pass it through a special sieve into the bath. Of course, you can not use a sieve, but simply pour paint from a can. But in this case, there is a possibility of the formation of small lumps in it, which will be noticeable on the smooth surface of your window. Therefore, it is recommended that you use a sieve.
  • The first applied layer will be quite watery. Its purpose will be to impregnate all the bumps and pores of the wood. Add paint thinner to dilute the paint. To apply paint, use a tool convenient for you - a roller or brush. Note that you must always allow time to dry the initial layer. Only after this is it permissible to apply another layer.
  • As a rule, three layers are applied. But in some cases, two are enough. To prevent leaks, all subsequent layers should be applied with a thick paint. If they nevertheless formed, as quickly as possible, until the paint is completely dry, remove them with a rag with a solvent. If you do not notice drips and they dry, you will have to do all the work again.
  • Do not completely dip the brush in the paint. It is enough to immerse it in half. Be sure to brush the edge of the bath to remove any excess paint. The window begins to paint on the outside, then go to the inside. It is best to stock up with several different brushes, rather than one. You can paint large surfaces with large ones, and use small ones for hard-to-reach areas. It is also better to choose a flat brush rather than a round one.
  • Paint along the wood fibers, so the paint will lie better and smoother. To paint the corners, do light and short brush strokes.
  • The newspaper and scotch tape should be removed from the frame until the paint is completely dry. Otherwise, removing the protective coating, you can simply damage the applied layers. But the fittings are installed only when all surfaces are completely dry.

Wooden windows have quite a few advantages. However, they require careful care, because over time their attractive appearance is lost.

Painting windows allows not only refreshing their appearance, but also avoiding the appearance of many problems, including the development of fungus and rotting wood. Following the instructions above, the whole process will be quick and easy.
