Painting facades is perhaps one of the most affordable and simple types of decoration for independent execution. Therefore, the owners of private real estate have questions: "What color is better to paint the house outside, and how to make the paint coating does not require updating as long as possible?"

Having brought to your attention the video in this article, we will try to cover this topic in detail, and also tell you what types of paints are better to use in a particular case.

Why paint a tree house

The wood used to erect the walls of houses is not only different in form, but also in quality. The log can be rounded, or it can be calibrated, the beam can be planed, and sometimes glued. And yet, there are frame-panel and frame-panel houses, which are sheathed with OSB plates from the outside, and also need painting.

So:

  • Applying a paint coating can be applied: both in order to emphasize the shape and texture of the structural material, and to protect its surface from corrosion. Walls made of calibrated wood do not need special decoration. They are beautiful in themselves, which we see in the above example.

But after treatment with a glazing antiseptic or facade azure, you can get a beautiful uniform shade with a clearly defined woody pattern. In addition, painted wood repels moisture, which significantly extends its service life.

What are the facades painted with

By and large, almost all facade paints universal, and can be used both for plastered surfaces, so for metal or wood. The main criterion for their choice is the properties of the coating, due to the characteristics of the base base and the conditions of its operation.

  • Simply put, painting the exterior walls of a house is not at all like painting a wooden staircase or pergola. The house is heated, and therefore, its designs accumulate steam, which should freely go outside, and not accumulate inside. If the walls are painted, it means that the paint has to ensure this.

  • For example, oil paints create an impermeable film on the surface. From the steam coming from the inside of the wall, the coating swells and peels, and serves no more than two to three years. Therefore, this type of paints is not used for painting facades, despite the fact that the instructions on their packaging often indicate that the paint is suitable for outdoor use.
  • The same applies to alkyd enamels - they are most often used to paint individual architectural elements, but not the walls themselves. Paints designed specifically for facades can be divided into three subgroups. These are organically soluble water-based paints, in the composition of which synthetic resins are used as binders: acrylic, latex, polyurethane.
  • There are silicate paints, which are made on the basis of liquid glass, and there are silicone paints, in the production of which siloxane emulsions are used. Despite the fundamentally different components, all of these options can be attributed to the same category of paints and varnishes, under the general name of water-dispersion.

  • PVA-based emulsions, which also belong to this group, are not suitable for outdoor applications. This is a purely interior option, and even that is not the best property. Most of the synthetic paints are universal, and not only in terms of applying to a particular type of surface. They can also be used for both outdoor and indoor use.

In the case of a wooden house, its interior also needs to be painted, and if desired, you can choose a solution that can be used both there and there. But since the house is always warm, why use expensive silicone paint for the interior, which is not afraid of frost, if the price of acrylic paint is two, or even three times lower.

A bit about design

Many people are interested in what color to paint the house outside. Of course, this is a matter of taste. When it comes to wooden houses, many prefer to use the colors inherent in the natural wood scheme. And if you purchase tinting azure for exterior decoration, then it has a ready-made shade.

  • But as for water-dispersion paints, they are most often presented in white. They are tinted with their own hands (see How to paint: choose an option), or, choosing a shade, order a computer tint in the store. As a rule, owners prefer soft, non-aggressive tones.

Note! Such shades as ivory, almonds, beige, cornflower-blue, olive, coffee with milk look very good on the facade. As an additional decor, you can and should use accents in the form of contrasting colored platbands, shutters, gables. In log cabins, they often focus on the joints between the wall sheathing elements, or the protruding ends of the logs, which also looks very nice.

  • Of course, there are non-standard color solutions, one of which you see in the photo below. Such juicy colors are rarely decided to be used for home decoration, especially wooden. But in this case, the finish looks extremely harmonious. The design of the walls as a whole, made “under the fachwerk” helps in this. By the way, for frame houses, a similar design style is a good solution.

  • The wall of such a house looks like a sheet of paper, drawn into rectangles. As part of this design, a cross-shaped layout can also be made on the walls. Such an interesting design of the walls is carried out by installing wooden or composite battens on them, which also close the joints between the sheathing sheets.
  • Stitching, highlighted in contrasting color, creates the full impression that the house is built in the style of half-timbered houses, although this is just an imitation. In order to obtain such a saturated color, which is used in this example, it is better to use inorganic-based colors for coloring paints.
  • They are not afraid of ultraviolet radiation, and therefore do not fade in the sun. Colored pigments are dry - they are often used at paint stations. There are also pasty colors, but their use requires a high dosage accuracy, which is quite difficult for independent work.
Tinting paints

  • The third option is tinting paints, which are most often used for tinting paints at home. They have a liquid consistency, and when you need to get a very saturated color, they can be used in pure form, since you can not add color to white paint indefinitely.

Water-based paints are best tinted - they can be diluted with color almost a quarter. The remaining types of paints will be able to give only a light pastel shade, since you can’t add more than five to seven percent of the color to them.

Surface preparation and painting

All of the above concerning the selection of color and tinting, applies not only to paints used for wooden house finishes. Moreover, synthetic-based paints are excellent for both wood and plaster.

The prerogative for wood is only tinting azure, as they are transparent, and are designed not to hide, but to emphasize the texture of the material:

  • But for paints used in finishing plaster surfaces, hiding power is one of the most important indicators. Here, on the contrary, the base should not shine through the coating. Therefore, before painting the plastered house outside, you can paint not only the paint, but also the primer, which will be used to process the surface in the preparation process.
  • The main thing is to carry out this very preparation correctly. Naturally, the base should be smooth, and there should be no cracks, open joints, dust and traces of any substances, including old paint.

  • The surface of the wood, like the plaster, must be sanded. They do this, of course, not by hand, but use a grinding machine. The surface thus prepared becomes smoother - and this improves adhesion, and the appearance of the facade as a whole.
  • If the preparation of wooden walls is limited to grinding and impregnation, then walls built of bricks or blocks sometimes need leveling. Otherwise, no matter how beautiful it is, it will not work beautifully. But if the walls are relatively even, you can do without plaster, painting the brickwork itself.

  • We gave you such an example, and as you can see, such a rich red color is used here that you rarely see on the facade. And, nevertheless, in combination with the beige color that painted the windows, curtain rods, columns, porch visor, it looks very interesting.
  • To prepare the brickwork for painting, it must be cleaned from the influx of mortar, and putty in those places where there are potholes or chipped corners on the brick. It may not be necessary to grind the surface, since a brick of good quality is already so smooth, but priming with a concrete contact, like plaster, is necessary.

As for the surface treatment with a primer, this technological operation should be carried out regardless of which walls will be painted: wooden, block, brick. It is only important that the composition is suitable for the type of surface, and be combined with the version of the paint used. Well, you can apply the primer, as well as the paintwork material in any way convenient for you.
